  3. I think the rules are clear. once you are removed from the list you can't get back into it. Iran had to remove the other guy before the deadline. but our WL federation didn't so IWF automatically picked up our 2 best ranked weightlifters and removed the rest. and that undesired weightlifter is a two time World Champion (have to say he was lucky both times but ordinary people don't understand that) I mean he wasn't a nobody. he has his own group of supporters. it wasn't easy for our WL federation to simply remove him and waiting for a miracle like this. that was risky we could end up with just 1 weightlifter in Tokyo! btw I was thinking maybe Moradi can bring this to CAS. claiming he was pregnant at the time. faking a pregnancy test or something. he had a big belly after all.

  4. This is an incredible simplistic post on a very complex issue By law, and as voted by referendum in Northern Ireland with the Good Friday agreement, people born in Northern Ireland are entitled to citizenship of both countries All sports bar football are played on all-island basis. Hockey and rugby in Northern Ireland are predominantly played by people who would call themselves British and the national associations there use a compromise flag and anthem to appease them (not in a patronising way, they actively wanted to encourage inclusion). Hockey is an interesting case as Ireland could not even enter Olympic qualifying until 1992 as the Ulster branch of Hockey Ireland objected to it as they wished to align themselves with GB for Olympic purposes (with several winning gold in 1988). This doesn’t apply at the Olympics. Obviously for individuals it is easier for them to choose federations As there is no physical border, the nearest club/training facility for athletes living near the border may be on the other side of that borderline. Your line about it being known but not publicised is odd because thousands do it for work reasons and no one cares. As mentioned above Rhys McClenaghan won gold in gymnastics at the commonwealth games and he lives and trains in Dublin at the Irish national sports centre (and lives in Bangor, NI when not training). To summarise, people born in Northern Ireland are free to choose British or Irish citizenship and individual athletes from NI are free to represent GBR or IRL in international competition Many others will have family ties in either country (particularly as Ireland has a long history of emigration to GB) and athletes born in either country but with parents or grandparents from the other can represent them The wider issue of why someone from NI would choose to represent one over the other is a different, more complex issue and one that I’m afraid you’ll have to research yourself

  9. Since it wasn't the case in the 2019 world championships, I'm just going to assume it won't be the case in the Olympics neither. As a fan of athletics, let's hope they'll stay far away from that monstrosity so that the actual best performing athletes can win.

  10. Our final team of 22, as FIFA has now allowed: Unfortunately, the coach of the senior team called 9 U24s for the Copa America so those are all apparently "unavailable" (despite some of our opponents will have players doing a "double"...). And there is also a dozen or so other players that were denied by their clubs: no players from Boca or River is telling as well as the fact there is only 1 overage played (a GK). My expectations are very little so I can't really be disappointed.

  26. She benefited from a rare set of circumstances. Had the BTF revealed a less favorable qualification procedure (like having the continental qualifiers in 2019) or if another Canadian athlete took prominence then she wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on. The combination of being one of the best athletes prior to getting pregnant, BTF screwing Pan American athletes hard and having the full support of the Canadian Federation gave her the opportunity to strike.

  27. Universality athletes are only allowed to start in one event though, irregardless of whether they have OST or not. Invited OST athletes can participate in multiple events, but only if they get specifically invited for all those events. So to summarise, only the OQT and relay athletes are allowed to start in their OST events without special invitations. EDIT:. Ah, they changed it after Rio. Universality athletes with OST may start two events after all.

  29. nice that she could foresee the future, since boxing governance was a mess and the date of the qualifiers wasn't known when she got pregnant, in 2018. I wonder what she'd have done if they had set them for 2019 when she wasn't yet fit to compete.

  30. You can consider it 373 already. Colombia will choose 64kg almost undoubtedly unless Mercedez is injured. Solis in 76kg is recovering from injury and lifted 247kg in -81kg non Olympic category at Pan Ams. She has competition from Dekha, Zavala closeby with Neisi at 261kg long way ahead. But Mercedez will go for gold 234 in pan ams with 238 pb just 2kg below Charron of Canada. No Real contenders for gold - silver hence it's easily gonna be 64kg with the exception of doping / injury

  31. Yes it is written in the article: “Mandy planned her pregnancy according to the Olympic cycle, specifically so she would be ready to compete at these Olympic qualifiers” (probably referring to -later cancelled- qualifiers in early to mid 2020 before the Olympics supposed to happen originally) So this refers to an one off issue which arose because of Covid-19

  38. I guess they called it "Universality" invitations just because of no Slovak swimmer achieved the OQT. But both invited swimmers have OST in both events. In fact 7 Slovak swimmers achieved OST in different events this cycle, FINA picked the two (M+W) with the closest times to OQT, and allowed them to race in 2 events each. But I am not very familiar with the whole swimming qualification format, this is just what I understood from our medias, NOC and Slovak Swimming sites.

  39. @Benolympique (41) +2 This morning when our Swimming Federation leaders opened their notebook, found a late night email from FINA in which was written that qualified...ehm...qualified based on the Universality quotas for "developing" (lol) swimming countries, well, rather, Invited to compete at the Olympics. And by this FINA assigned to 2 Athletes quotas (1 per gender) in 4 events (2 per Gender) Richard Nagy (200m Butterfly, 400m Individual Medley) among Mens will return to the Olympics after Rio 2016 (9th in the 400m IM, he was the first non qualified to the final there. btw many will remember he competed in Rio also in the Marathon Swimming competition). Andrea Podmaníková (100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke) among Women. Andrea will experience her Olympic debut. and will compete in both W breaststroke events. Our NOC explained that Swimming quotas, invitations or re-allocations are automatically added to the team. So thanks god, we just made it to the 40 athletes barrier however it is still 6 less athletes that our smallest delegation ever from London 2012... https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ0PX_ZqY0P/

  42. Pretty good answer. A sport like Weightlifting, where EWF and IWF are almost broken beyond repair, the kindest thing might be to kick the port out and try and rebuild from the ground up, abandoning IWF and seeking recognition for a new confederation altogether. Sort of AIBA on steroids (parden the pun) A sport like Swimming where FINA are clearly pretty shit and pretty corrupted, but the sport itself is not hopelessly riddled shoud be punished, but not to the same extent.
