  2. What a comeback! North Macedonia started this tournament with 3 draws and a 3rd place in the group stage, and now they are the final four! Next... Costa Rica had to go through the repechage round and then had to defeat Somalia, so the fact that they are here is already a miracle. They are now facing their largest obstacle yet, Rihanna, who obliterated poor Cuba and is undefeated at the moment, only our Semi-finalist North Macedonia was able to steal a point from them. Maybe we will have a Barbados v North Macedonia rematch in the SF?

  4. Totallympics, are you hyped for the Quarter-finals? I hope you are because we are in the endgame now and the next few matches will decide who will reach the final four in our first Special edition of TISC. We will start with Burundi vs North Macedonia. Burundi defeated Guinea in an incredibly tight match in the previous round while North Macedonia sent home the undefeated South Africa.
  5. Yeah, I think we should only have 2 contests per year. This year was an exception because of some very obvious COVID related reasons. Biennial turns feel a bit too much for me because I prefer the Open contest to the Special. I think having this Special edition every 4 year instead of the Open one would be better, it would also make it more... special. So we would have the next Special edition in 2024 "in France" after the Summer Games.
  6. The African Group Stage 1st place curse is real! Cape Verde joins the nations of South Africa and Somalia who underperformed after a strong start in the group stage. Shockingly, South Africa goes home while the two countries they beat in the group stage, Costa Rica and Côte d'Ivoire, advance to the next round. We will continue with the final session of R16 at 19:00 GMT+2 with @mrv86 at the helm.

  9. I hope you are ready for some more TISC because we are back with the third session of the R16. Next up... a popular ESC participant from Albania vs. a song from Puerto Rico that most of us didn't expect to see here when we saw who they were up against in their group. Maybe they can surprise us once more?
  10. Damn, we only have two "mainstream" songs left, Barbados and Sri Lanka. I do wonder if Rihanna has a huge advantage now, because as we move forward and increase the number of jurors per match, the more mainstream, pop songs can be more of a consensus choice. And Diamonds might be the last one left depending on what happens with Sri Lanka today.
  11. That's it for the Repechage Round. We will continue with first round of the Challenge Trophy at 16:00 GMT+2, hosted by @Wumo and @mrv86.

  14. Hey, everyone, TISC is back! No amount of scheduling conflicts and shitty internet providers can stop us from finishing this contest! Before we restart with the repechage round, here's a short recap: 14 nations have already advanced to the Round of 16: The winner of v will face in the next round. The winner of v will face in the next round.
  15. The TV director knew the same thing any sane person knew at the moment they saw this on the live feed: either someone has already died or is in critical conditions because this was an incredibly severe crash at high speed. Which means that they shouldn't replay it because they have the obligation to not make a TV spectacle out of what can easily be a fatal incident.
  16. Speaking of YT, here are the videos: Athhens 2004 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IygEgGkuY9Y Turing 2006 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFVf3FHUwOs Beijing 2008 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9LIVvOI-r0 Vancouver 2010 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFInpfcb8b0 London 2012 - https://youtu.be/HSvFiJK1PaY?t=187 Sochi 2014 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAHmZxySlDo Rio 2016 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6LLsyodTQo PyeongChang 2018 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F2J2GEy6Es
  17. Athens 2004 - Tímea Nagy wins her second gold medal in Women's épée. First Hungarian gold I have ever watched live. I was really young, but I remember being extremely stressed out as we had Nagy in one SF, and Mincza-Nébald (the other Hungarian fencer) in the other SF, both against French fencers, and both semi-finals ended with 15-14 (sadly Mincza-Nébald lost and got a 4th place). Honorable mention to the men's water polo final, which I couldn't watch live, where Hungary managed to win despite Serbia and Montenegro controlling most of the match and having a 3-0 lead early on. Turin 2006 - Antoine Dénériaz takes the gold in Men's Downhill as the thirtieth racer by a huge margin. Beijing 2008 - Kozmann and Kiss finishes 3rd in Men's C2 1000m one month after Kozmann's former partner, György Kolonics, suddenly passed away. Vancouver 2010 - Petra Majdic (duh), that bronze medal is legendary London 2012 - Iceland has a 1 goal lead 14 seconds before the end of QF against Hungary in men's handball and has the opportunity to seal it with a penalty. Fazekas (Hungarian goalkeeper) saves the penalty, and with a quick turnover Hungary equalizes the match in a couple of seconds. Sochi 2014 - Tie for the gold in Women's downhill Rio 2016 - Emese Szász turning the match around from 7-11 against two-time World Champion Rossella Flamingo in the final of Women's épée and winning the gold. (too bad that we experienced the opposite of that in men's épée a couple of days later ) PyeongChang 2018 - first ever Hungarian gold at the Winter Olympics (duh)
  18. I would be able to post the results on some days, and I think that applies to many of us. Not having rest days on the schedule was likely a bad idea. I mean, every team sport tournament has rest days once they reach the KO rounds. So one solution can be this... Friday 31th July - Rest Day Saturday 1st August - Repechages & Challenge Trophy R1 Sunday 2nd August - Rest Day Monday 3rd August - Round of 16 & Challenge Trophy R2 Tuesday 4th August - Rest Day Wednesday 5th August - Quarter-Finals & Challenge Trophy R3 Thursday 6th August - Rest Day Friday 7th August - Semi-Finals & Challenge Throphy Final/3rd Saturday 8th August - Rest Day Sunday 9th August - Gold Medal and Bronze Medal Match + some kind of "Closing Ceremony" On these rest days we can all sorts of stuff similar to Japan Day, like a TISC tribute (posting our favorite TISC entries from previous editions), or some sports tribute (favorite Olympic moments, favorite Olympic champion, etc.).
  19. So we went from Shawn Mendes winning TISC to Dua Lupa getting defeated by everyone in 3 months... yeah. (this is particularly funny because Dua Lipa is far more critically acclaimed as an artist than Mendes)
  20. Anime has become a worldwide phenomenon over the decades, which inspired many Western artists to work with Japanese animation studios. Most notably Toei Animation has produced an anime music film for Daft Punk's Discovery album, titled Interstella 5555, showcasing some classic cel animation. Here's a scene from that movie, which is also the music video of Daft Punk's One More Time. And to showcase modern anime, the "digital era", with some blend of 2D and 3D animation, here's the music video of Shelter, which was produced by A-1 Pictures.
  21. There's no Japan Day without Joe Hisaishi (or Olympic Opening Ceremony in Tokyo, I mean, he has to perform there, right? ). He's the one anime composer everyone knows around the world, sometimes I refer to him as the "John Williams of anime", he has made countless memorable scores for Ghibli movies. Here are two of his most famous work, from the two most famous Ghibli movies, One Summer's Day from Spirited Away and Ashitaka and San from Princess Mononoke.
  22. Asia has used up all of its mojo on that Chinese 2nd place a few months ago.
  23. "Burundi annihilates South Korea in a shocking 8-0 victory". Yep, that's a sentence I have never expected to write down.
