  4. 1. 8/10 Canada had its most successful non-boycotted SOG in terms of gold medals (7, tied with 92) and total medals (24). However, there were some notable disappointments. 2. Surprises: W8 gold medal in rowing. They've historically done well in the event, but were not gold medal favourites going in. Women's soccer getting gold was amazing, especially beating the US in the semis for revenge for having 2012 stolen from them by a corrupt ref. Mitchell winning gold in track sprint on the last day was a great ending, and Genest getting Keirin bronze previously bodes well for our sprint track cycling team moving forward. Seeing our big stars from Rio, Penny Oleksiak and Andre De Grasse succeed again was great. Disappointments: Women's beach volleyball. In a matter of a couple of hours we went from looking forward to a possible all Canada semifinal to having both our teams lose quite easily in the quarters. Women's basketball and rugby teams were supposed to be medal threats and didn't even make it out of group play. This was the first SOG with no wrestling medals in a very long time. In boxing, Mandy Bujold fought so hard to be there through arbitration and courts just to be completely outmatched in her first round. One medal in diving, with only one individual diver making it to a final, was a big disappointment. Overall, Canada historically has an issue with finishing 4th. There have been quite a few articles written about it in the past, and as a nation we always try to figure out why. This time I believe we got 12 4ths, along with 3 other bronze medal losses (in combat sports, so technically you finish 5th). That's 15 near misses for a country that got 24 actual medals. I'm not sure about this year, but it has been proven in many other Olympics that Canada gets the most 4th/5th places with regard to their actual medal count. Some of these 4ths were shocks (men's 4x100 freestyle relay) and some were due to injury (Rosie in trampoline), but it's still incredibly frustrating as a Canadian sports fan. Some will say it's a sign of how powerful the whole team is among a variety of sports, but you start to believe your country just lacks the killer instinct to get to the top. So that's why I only gave an 8/10. There was a point where Canada had more 4th places than gold+silver+bronze, and we were getting 2 a day with no medals. In the end the numbers got better, but it was frustrating for a bit. 3. Canada had no stated goal, but I'd think breaking medal records probably does it. 4. Idk which sports will get more funding, but one of our banks (RBC) had a development program for athletes that showed promise. Many of them had fantastic results - Kelsey Mitchell won track cycling gold and she just took up the sport in 2017 due to this program! Her teammate Lauriane Genest is also part of this program and got a bronze. Another member, Avalon Wasteneys, got gold as part of the W8 rowing team. Pierce Lepage finished 5th in decathlon (same spot as Warner in his first Olympics). They're already looking for more athletes to support for Paris, so I can see this continuing to be a huge success.

  16. yes, that substance (ostarine) is the new frontier of steroids, because it has (almost) the same effectivity, but without many of those really dangerous collateral effects that "natural" steroids (not to mention chemical derivates) have... also in Italy many athletes have been caught in the last couple of years (most notable name, Alex Di Giorgio, former swimmer of the Italian National team)... and I think we're gonna see many more in the next future...

  19. With the conclusion of the 2020 Summer Olympics, curious eyes have turned to Paris and how those games will defer from Tokyo. What changes will we see? The most eye-catching stat is that Paris 2024 will have fewer events with 329 total, 10 fewer than Tokyo 2020. This is the first time since Rome 1960 that the next Olympics will have fewer events than the previous one. Totallympics takes a closer look. This decrease is largely due to the changes of host selected sports as Tokyo selected sports baseball/softball (2 events) and karate (8 events) have been removed. Additionally, four weightlifting events will be removed and not replaced (the 10 remaining weight classes will be confirmed at a later date). The other three Tokyo selected sports; skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will make their return with sport climbing gaining an additional two events (men’s and women’s speed). The fourth and final host selected sport will be breaking, set to make its Olympic debut with B-boys and B-girls events. Additionally, other sports will have changes to their program, but will keep the same number of overall events. The biggest changes will be seen in canoeing and sailing. For canoeing the men’s and women’s K1 200m events were dropped while the slalom discipline gained two events with men’s and women’s extreme canoe. Additionally, the men’s K2 1000m and C2 1000m will consist of 500m events. Sailing sees the complete removal of the men’s Finn class while the men’s and women’s 470 will now become a mixed event. These changes will make room for the men’s and women’s kiteboarding. While the windsurfing events remain, they will change equipment from the RS:X to iQFoil. In order to decrease the difference between men’s and women’s medalling events, boxing will have a men’s event transferred to the women for a total of 7 men and 6 women events. The weight classes will be confirmed at a later date. Overall, there will be 157 men’s, 152 women’s and 20 mixed or open events. Other sports to have changes include athletics where the men’s 50km race walk will make way for the mixed team race walk, shooting where a rotation from mixed team trap to mixed team skeet will occur and sport climbing where the men’s and women’s combined will only include the bouldering and lead portions as speed is now a separate medalling event. Next week Totallympics will take a closer look as to the changes to the athlete quotas as the 2024 Olympics will have to adhere to the IOC’s 10,500 limit after having more than 11,000 athletes in Tokyo.

  20. All I meant is that rarely a cheater is exposed during major International competitions in these sports (especially Olympics). Usually weightlifting, cycling and athletics are the leaders by miles. Now that I saw the figures from WADA, I have been surprised by the high percentage of dopers in boxing and wrestling. Sorry if I mislead somebody. Apparently equestrian is the absolute "champion" percentage-wise (https://www.wada-ama.org/sites/default/files/resources/files/2019_anti-doping_testing_figures_en.pdf)

  21. Boxing and definitely, absolutely wrestling Because technique is important, like in any sport, but strength, endurance and training hours simply are important too. And just to clarify, I don't mean this as anything towards Bulgaria at all, just specifically about the sports Sadly there is basically no sport where some form of doping (be that beta blockers to steady the nerves and hands, good old blood transfusions or whatever steroids) doesn't give some form of advantage.

  23. Could you please explain to me what is the state of the Bulgarian anti-doping system? The national anti-doping centre is certified using the same requirements as any other one in EU: https://anti-doping.government.bg/en/ Let's also check the medals Bulgaria won at Tokyo: Gold in rhythmic gymnastics - an entirely skill based sport Gold in karate - a sport where technique is the primary way to win Gold in boxing - a sport where judges decide your faith regardless of your strength and stamina plus it was in one of the middle weight categories Silver in pistol shooting - steady hand and good mental strength required Two bronzes in female freestyle wrestling - again a technique based sport In which of the sports above did you last heard of any notable names worldwide as dopers?

  24. That's actually a better argument But really, even when we do know that the players were doping (ie Juve at the end of the 90's and thus the french football team of 98), people just don't care. Football is too big of a toy to be break up.

  25. 1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 3/10 Poor, but not completely awful as one could have feared at some point during the games thanks to the last week-end. The overall number of medals is a major disappointment (worst total tied with Athens since 1992), but the number of golds (and thus our ranking in the medals table) is around what was expected. Obviously, with Paris as the next host, one would have assume that we would have been on the rise before our home games like previously hosts were. But it was never going to happen : overall, we had a poor qualification run and probably had a worst team with less potential medallists than in Rio. 2. What were the surprises and heartbreaks ? The surprises have been few. The biggest one being Romain Cannone ranked world number 47 or something and eventually gold medallist in fencing. Team sports have also been incredible successful with 6 medals and 3 golds with only the 3*3 women basketball team being a let down. The men's volleyball team gold seem to me like the biggest surprise any french NT ever achieved during the olympics (possibly tied with the men's handball bronze in 1992) Heartbreaks ? So many... Just on the top of my head: Vincent Luis (Triathlon), Herbert-Mahut (tennis), the men's épée team, the men and particularly the women MTB team, Vincent Daudet (BMX), Benjamin Thomas (Omnium) Marc Antoine Olivier (OW swimming), Valentin Prades (Pentathlon) ... Major contenders for gold who all failed to reach their objective and even worst to even secure a podium, which largely explains why we didn't achieve as many medals as we are used to. Cycling have once again been the major disappointment of the french team. They were expecting 6 medals and are leaving Tokyo with 2 bronze... At some point, you can't blame everything on 'bad luck". There is something wrong here, that need to be fixed ASAP. Contrary to Rio with boxing and athletics (6 medals each), we didn't have any sport really overperforming. Judo (8 medals) and fencing (5) have been by far our main medals factories, but that was expected and I don't think such level of success was out of reach prior to the olympics. As I've said on the other thread, what worries me the most is that once again we have failed to match our results from the previous world championships during the olympics. 3.Was your country's goal achieved? Nothing was set in stone, but the discussion was about 40 medals. So, no. 4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future? Not one in particular, but it seems that the money will be less spread accros sports and that we are moving slowly to an athlete-per-athlete approach.

  26. Well yeah, in basically every sport even with doping you still need some serious degree of talent and a shit ton of dedication (even if in this case it's the wrong kind of dedication) to put in the work, simply because generally doping doesn't automagically make you faster or stronger, but because it makes you be able to train more and/or harder. There's really barely any sport where doping would not have an advantage. Even if the advantage is relatively small, that can still make the difference between being someone who sometimes reaches the top-20 or something and being a serious medal contender, since differences at the top are often small.

  28. Performance rating. A 4 to 5. It wasn't all bad, but it was below expectations. Particularly in the last couple of days, canoe sprint and track cycling especially were a big disappointment. And nope, the goal was not achieved. Biggest surprise was silver for race walker Jonathan Hilbert. I guess gold for Alexander Zverev in tennis was a surprise as well. The medal itself not so much, but that it was the gold medal. Biggest heartbreak was decathletes Niklas Kaul's injury in high jump. I'm still not really over it and I'm sure he would have won a medal. Biggest disappointments were Oliver Zeidler in rowing and Johannes Vetter in javelin.

  29. FOR ITALY 1) 6/10 for global performance. Italy wins 10 gold medals, and is 10th in medal table, like all predictions. Surprise is where we win. Nothin from out traditionally sports, like fencing, boxing and shooting, all fromo atletics. And i'm totally agree with @phelps for singles sports judgements. 2) Obviusly 5 golds in track&fields. If Jacobs was a medal candidate, the 4x100 relay is totally unexpected. Heaartberak is in the most important 15 minutes of italian's sport of ever, with Tamberi's and Jacobs wins. 3) Our country's goal is ever top10 on medal table and about 10 golds and 35 medals. Italy is quite stable on this level. 4) All, in Italy sport is totally killed by politicians, during pandemic year our athletes was not able to training free, and now many activities are still closed. Every medal is a miracle for us.

  30. 1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 8/10 Far from perfect but closer to perfect obviously than above average. But you can't argue with 7 golds and 20 medals but when you consider 4 4ths and a truckload of 5ths and 93% of the team in the top 10 that's a whole load of what ifs... 10 sports won medals for the country. 2. What were the suprises and heartbreaks ? Biggest surprises were the Mens eight winning the blue ribbon event in rowing and in my opinion one of the blue ribboned events of the Olympics so much history in this event. It was our first gold in this event since 1972 and our first medalists in the eights since 76. You have to remember it was being led by a rowing legend in Hamish Bond part of the infamous Kiwi pair who were unbeaten and were never beaten from 2009-2016 who collected his 3rd gold and was leading a very novice and young group of guys to a gold. Also our first ever gymnastics medal and a surprise medal in the Mens triathlon even though we've medalled in this event before Hayden Wilde had only started in 2016 just to lose weight but was told he was good enough to represent NZ little did we know he'd be collecting a bronze already. Heartbreak, well it has to go to the Mens team pursuit in track cycling. Broke the WR along with Italy but Filippo Ganna is just a machine and won it for Italy in the final 50m and prevented us from being in the Gold/Silver medal ride off. Then no luck at all when leading Australia for the bronze with 800m to go and were increasing the deficit but then Aaron Gate hit a teammates wheel and it was all over. Burling and Tuke leading the 49ers then the Germans spoiled the party and got between us and the Brits. The latter winning the gold and NZ having to settle for silver. 3.Was your country's goal achieved? NZOC had a target of 16 medals we ended up with 20 so by their estimates yes. By the publics, yes. But the sailors had a shocking regatta and by their exceptional standards very disappointing regatta. 4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future? Current / Upcoming sports The NZ government has pledged more funding to sport throughout NZ and the opening up of a sports institute in the South Island (finally). Since the debacle of Sydney 2000 we're now only seeing the benefits of increased funding. Obviously Rowing, Canoeing, the usual suspects will get more investment. Canoeing especially because now they want to see more investment to the burgeoning juniors coming through on the Mens side. I have a feeling Equestrian, Field Hockey Womens Football and Sailing will get a reduction. All 4 had a poor Olympics. But I do see an improvement in Sailing because NZ and Sailing go hand in hand. On a side note and one that's not related it will be interesting to see how our winter olympians go early next year. Judging from current trajectory it all points to it being very successful and may finally break our gold medal duck (touchwood). But big pressure on the freestyle skiers and snowboarders to deliver. There seems to be quite a bit of optimism around these young teenagers and young adults.

It may sounds cruel but I do support US and its allies withdrawal from Afghan. An foreign forces made government is without futures. It’s fate is leaning on the extent of foreign interference. Once it’s abandoned, it’s definitely gonna be miserable. The future of Afghan should be shaped by its own people with or without violence. Well the fate of the weak is never on its own. When to enter and when to leave your country is never up to you. Good luck to Afghan people.

  40. Who here is finding themselves rewatch various medals by Canada? Upon my return to Beijing I moved into a new apartment with a giant smart TV so I broadcast all the medals all the time from CBC's site these past few days. I can't believe I missed W8's gold, I knew they were doing great (look up my posts about them in the heats). I was supposed to watch on a train, but there were complications about getting into the station and the covid outbreak I mentioned. It drained my phone, my time and my patience, so read about it hours later. I've enjoyed it several times on my new TV now.

  42. 1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 Athletics...10+ Weightlifting...9.5 Taekwondo, Sailing, Track Cycling, Rowing, Karate, Gymnastics, Archery...6 Swimming 4.5 most of the remaining sports...3 Shooting, Fencing...1 2. What were the surprises and heartbreaks ? Surprises - Athletics above all, obviously... Palmisano was our only true gold medal candidate (and a not locked one), Tamberi was also a minor medal candidate with a bit of optimism... but the others...who would have ever thought about Jacobs and the men's 4*100m relay? me, not... Rowing, too...I mean, I expected the women's lightweight double to fight for bronze at best, but they were just amazing, gifting me of one of the most intense feelings of all the games... Heartbreaks - Frank Chamizo and Manuel Lombardo are maybe the 2 most painful flops of the Games for me, personally...but frankly we had so many disappointing performances (especially in shooting and fencing) that I can't count them... 3. Was your country's goal achieved? definitely, yes... we expected our usual 30 medals, 8 golds performance...but we come home with a record-breaking total of 40 medals and we're also back to double digit gold total, which is quite surprising if we look at how many expected medals we missed in our supposed main sports... 4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future? as usual, our funding is connected to the number of people practicing the sport...so, there's no way to move from the "Football, than the rest" scheme, with swimming, athletics, volleyball, basketball and tennis getting the most money out of our resources left by football... unfortunately, those disciplines that should get more attention and more money to become more competitive in the next future will be the sports that get the least money, despite their results...

  43. Wow that would be a shame. I know in other sports it is an issue in Greece (basketball for example there was the issue with Pitino being chosen as national team coach while he was coaching Panathinaikos), and normally I would agree that they shouldn't do both. However Vlachos gets good results with both teams lately and most of our national team players play for Olympiakos anyways so I think it actually helps that everyone is together all the time.

  44. 1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 I'd say 7, we got our best medal tally ever despite the fact that we didn't participate in Weightlifting where we could easily won 2 medals in, so yeah it was satisfying overall 2. What were the suprises and heartbreaks ? The biggest surprise for me is Hedaya Malak in Taekwondo , I didn't expect anything from Her, she hasn't done anything big since her bronze in Rio , Ferial's gold in Karate was kind of surprise for me I expected her to win a medal but not gold, Omar Assar qualifying to quarters in TT was a great surprise, this guy has very big qualities but didn't show it with NT since a very while ago, especially defeating Falck was a great moment, El Gendy going from 13 to Silver in MP after laser run was a very big pleasant surprise, he was absolutely flying whether in Shooting or Running, I know he's the best in this sport right now, but he proved that he can shine very early despite the very bad start in fencing with 2-7 record or even in Riding where he got all the 1st barrier, I though I'm watching another heartbreak MP riding after Aya Medany in Beijing, but he kept his nerves and made 284 At the end out of 300 , Mohamed El Sayed from nowhere reaching Men's epee quarters and losing only 15-13 to the bronze medalist was something really really surprising for me, our fencers overall made great performance here, t was only about very small details that kept us away from a deserved medal and I can't really forget the great comeback of Mohamed Hamza against the legendary Cassara in men's foil from 13-7 down to winning the match 15-13 , it was absolutely amazing, dominating games against Germany and Sweden in handball was also surprising , Mohamed Metwally reaching Semis in Greco-Roman -87 from nowhere was another surprise Heartbreaks : Many ? I'd say the loss against Spain in men's handball BMM was the biggest, I cried much after this loss, I mean why we always can lose in this way in handball when we are really close from winning something big, why u miss twice when u can lead with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes, this sport has always brought joy and cries to me, the 2nd one was Mohamed Ibrahim loss against Ukrainian wrestler in men's greco Roman -67 in the vary last 8 seconds after leading 6-0 and Ukrainian sitting on the mat, I can't really describe how gutted am I with this match, The failure of Mhelba's brothers in Shotgun, Abdelrahman Wael loss in Taekwondo -68 in the last 2 seconds with a punch from a very average Bosnian player was really heartbreaking 3.Was your country's goal achieved? I guess so, they expected to win 5 medals and got 6 4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future? Current / Upcoming sports Nothing known in Egypt and nothing logical as well, but I guess Wrestling and Taekwondo are the best sports where we can invest in among weightlifting which both future of the Sport and Egyptian lifters As well are very unknown

  46. from what I read in social media, it seems Taliban took full control of Herat, the third largest city of Afghanistan and they are going to capture Kandahar (the 2nd city) in next few hours or days. Kabul will fall in few weeks, it won't even last till the end of 2021. those corrupt politicians will fly to some western countries and poor people will remain to deal with these monsters. I bet Mr Ashraf Ghani already has his plane ready to fly personally I know more about Herat because that's close to our border and people there have more or less the same culture. so it's just heartbreaking to read such news. reading people's reaction in social media almost makes me cry what's more disappointing is that the whole world doesn't care. this was easily preventable. so I guess we won't see Afghanistan at the Olympics anymore. but but but the generous Tommy Bach and his friends will invite few shitty random athletes from Europe with Afghan heritage for the next refugee team to give """hope""" and happiness to all refugees around the world. problem solved.
