One thing is for sure so far, people who wouldn't normally care about the WC, or football in general are very vocal these past 2 weeks. Good thing we talk a lot at work about the teams and players, because when i go "online" the football is a little side thing. Hopefully this will change, when the matches actually start.

It's certainly not just people who wouldn't normally care about the WC. I know that Denmark is one of the more extreme cases (of the participating nations I believe only Germany are at more or less the same level) but also lots of huge football fans are very clearly saying that they won't be watching while some others may just watch Denmark's mathes. At least here in Denmark, I doubt that the criticism will become silent when the games start.

There is no perfect country , why dont you say that to USA when they host something ...about what they did in hiroshima, vietnam, 30 millions homeless they have , kids in prisons....etc ?

I'll happily criticize the US (believe me, I do that quite a lot), but that's not the point. This is 6500 people who died preparing the country for the World Cup due to slave-like conditions. This World Cup (and other prestige projects from Qatar) cost lives. Sports should NOT do so!

FIFA confirms no alcohol to be sold at Qatar World Cup stadiums

supporters are shocked ...Well done Qatar :roflmao:

Yeah. If 6500 dead migrant workers didn't show FIFA what a disgrace this is, I'm sure ruining the relationship with one of FIFA's sponsors will help FIFA understanding what a huge mistake this is!

But then again... Infantino's press conference doesn't show any understanding. God, I'm embarrassed as a football fan!

Incredible that ukraine has accused Russia yesterday about this missile....while they did they  launched it

This strategy : push other countries / nato to join the war ....this is a crime , 2 inocent civilians have died , how can you launch 1 missile in the opposit way of war

Yeah sure. Ukraine certainly wants to start WW3!

By all means it was a faulty Anti-Air missile. A mistake and a tragedy.

Ruling it out is the wrong response from Zelenskyy but talking about a false flag attack is rather stupid.

Damn, time for everyone to move to Denmark it seems? :p

That salary seems insane, and reading about a 50% income tax doesn't make the salary any less insane. I guess products in the supermarket are significantly more expensive than in other countries as well?

The median salary is quite a bit lower. My salary is about 2500 less (not counting quarterly bonuses) and I'm still pretty clearly in the top half :p

I remember that world cup. The Qatar team with only foreign players, the foreign fake fans hired from Spain, the horrible referees… I wonder how it will be in football and if also they will manage to reach far as they did in handball lol

Hey... They did have 4 players born in Qatar! :p

“Harder to vote” = to have approximately the same electoral laws as…..:DEN

Actively trying to create longer lines at polling places by closing down a lot of them... I mean, wanting 15 polling places for 4,5 million in Maricopa County is a disasterous idea. In my municipality with about 355.000 we have just below 50. Meanwhile in Georgia it's now prohibited to give food and water to people waiting in lines... Which they want to be longer. Or making it harder to register as voter for students, cutting down on early voting. Quite a lot of differences from Denmark.

Voter ID's isn't a  bad idea (or some other ID). But when the US population is so much anti-state that they cannot keep track of where their citizens live and give ID's to every single citizen, it is a major problem, especially towards minorities. I mean... If I move, I get a new ID sent for free. Quite a lot of US states even have stricter ID rules than Denmark.

The democrats are in no way perfect. They do gerrymandering in some states as well and certainly some ideas about election laws are more about getting more voters, but they did not censure a secretary of state or governor for affirming the election results or have candidates say very clearly that they will not accept a loss.

Because the only true democracies are those where the same party wins every time. :smoke:

Not at all, but when about 2/3 of the party who lost last time claims that the election was stolen and the entire party have been working hard in most states to make it harder to vote, especially for groups who usually votes for the Democrats.

  9. So today's election day in Denmark.

14 parties including a few new ones and record numbers have been unsure who they'll vote for.

    Really nothing is certain.

One thing is known. The Faroe Islands voted yesterday where the Social Democrats and a liberal party got the two faroese seats.

Beating someone is wrong in any country, there is nothing worth defending. What I want to emphasize is that what makes it newsworthy. We don’t often see news someone pee on the street on NYT front page.

Consulate staff employed by another country beating up a citizen in Manchester is pretty newsworthy. So is China's general attitude to critics outside China. Like when I know people who have to consider it whether they should leave the country due to their criticism towards China or when an embassy takes down posters outside embassy grounds.

  11. Meanwhile for some lighter political news:

As some of you may remember, last year I took part in the local election here in Aarhus.

I got 4th most personal votes among the candidates from my party who got three seats meaning that I was first in line if something were to happen.

Now on monday I will get my chance as one of the three members of the council is taking a parental leave for the rest of the year!

It's just three months but I'm extremely exited about it even though it will take a huge chunk of my spare time!

Once again the situation is getting out of control here :(, several cities are "on fire". dictators just never learn from their mistakes. they think they shouldn't give up an inch until the day they have to give up everything. (but at huge huge cost )

we are not close to that date yet but people are extremely angry and just one "accident" is enough and these accidents are happening quite frequently in past few years.

Fingers crossed that we will see something good happening. Huge respect for the protesters!

Our president making fun from the "Faux-pas" of the AP agency :p

The AP agency, which captured the photos from this moment during yesterday Queen Elizabeth II funeral, made a mistake by announcing her partner Juraj Rizman as the president of Slovakia, and our president Zuzana Čaputová was called in the description as his delegation.

This error was published only for a few minutes, but even during that small amount of time it managed to became super viral around the whole of Slovakia. :d  However, if you were expecting our president to be offended, the opposite is true. She published a status on her media that really amused many people and immediately became an Internet hit in the country when she wrote: "Congratulations to Juraj ! It's a difficult job for a woman, so how about for a man." :p

    Wait... what ?!

As you can see on the picture fro Swewi each party have their own ballots. You pick the ballots for the party you want to vote for (I believe there are blanks as well as Sweden has quite a lot of write-in parties and candidates).

In the past, you could take the ballot on the voting location where people could more or less keep an eye on you and at some locations party member were even giving them to voters. You could always take the ballots from more parties to hide your selection, but it really still wasn't that good.
But I understand that this part has been improved, not having the ballots in public.

The reason for having the individual ballots and not a long list like most other countries is that the election laws are very liberal in Sweden. It's very easy to have your party in the election. The full ballot would be terribly long!
Just look at some of the parties up for election: Donald Duck's party, The least bad party, The poor man's party, Capitalism with a friendly face and Evil chicken party. Not to mention a handful of more or less extreme parties on both wings.

@Swewi What's the deal with the -erna suffixes in Swedish? I seem to recall half of the local speedway teams have it the same way (Dackarna, Indianerna) but basically no football clubs are named like that :dunno:

It's really just plural. The liberals, the moderates, the indians and so on.
