  6. They do care, but IOC/ITF and ATP/WTA don't make it easy. And Covid is playing havoc with all professional sport. No-one who saw Rafa's doubles win in Rio, Djoks tears when Del Potro put him out, or either of the Murray finals would under any illusion players don't care. Different players have different relationships with it - for both Murray and De Potro, it's absolutely a major part of their legacy, for Djok it's the one last thing he doesn't have. For Roger, it's a national pride thing for a country with limited summer olympic gold opportunities. for some of the Mixed doubles pairs, its validation of their event, for others its just a festival of sport, a cnahnce to rub shoulders with heroes in other sports - (and the lack of fans is undoubtedly putting many off)

  7. Well if there is any silver lining there, Auger-Aliassime (who based on interviews is very much going to Tokyo) said he would probably not play mixed doubles because three events would be too much. I maintain that Dabrowski / Auger-Aliassime in mixed is Canada's best medal chance in Tennis by a wide margin, so Pospisil withdrawing might end up being a good thing.

  9. Nothing is ever safe, but I'd go for this: 1. Women's road race --> Basically all four women have an excellent chance to win the gold. I hope it won't happen, but even a double or triple medal win is not unrealistic (although of course it's the road race, a ton can happen) 2. Women's time trial --> Basically the same sort of thing, although with Van der Breggen and Van Vleuten there's only two and there's always Dygert. I hope Dygert is all recovered and fit, in which case she's the clear favourite (but still a Dutch medal should be fairly safe). 3. Women's 1500/5000/10.000m (whichever Hassan runs) --> She's a gold medal threat in whichever event she chooses to run, and a nearly safe medal bet as well. Gold is a different thing of course, but it's hard to imagine three women beating her. Bonus: Men's mountainbike --> A pretty open field, but a 'normal' Van der Poel really should be a nearly safe medal threat. Forgot women's field hockey, that should be a fairly safe medal as well. Same for certain track cycling events, but there we'll have to wait and see which super round wheels the British will show up with

  11. well this year is a bit different, other countries are in trouble for different reasons and China had the luxury of picking 8 weightlifters from the pool of World Champions. I believe all of them will win the gold unless they bomb out.

  12. Well, it has been just confirmed by our authorities. ISSF for some reason decided to change their own rules about mixed event double starters, and even despite protest of our federation will not allow Kovačócy and Špotáková to compete in the Individual events Our federation and athletes are furious ! They will be allowed to compete only as 2nd team in the Mixed Trap. also every country will be allowed to start only with one team in the mixed events if they have at least 1 M and 1 W, only the nations which won quotas in Mixed events at the 2018 World Champs like Slovakia in Mixed Trap can enter two teams.

  18. While I appreciate and respect your assessment, I have to respectfully disagree on the badminton picks. The XD pair is prone to losing to lower seeds because their weaknesses are very easy to be exploited. Sapsiree, while having great defensive racket skills, has lost her athleticism due to her ACL injury in 2017 and has never been a competent front court player. This puts a lot of pressure to Dechapol to not only create shots, but to cover virtually the entire half of their court in order to protect Sapsiree. This means that Dechapol is vulnerable to being exhausted when he has to play 80 percent of the shots. If Dechapol cannot put up his end of the bargain and then some, this pair can lose any match against any pair in the top 10 of the world rankings. In terms of WS, Ratchanok, while being hailed as the best technical player in the world along with Tai Tzu Ying, has pronounced stamina issues as well as a weak psyche. If you look at her record in major tournaments, whether it be world championships or World Tour 1000 tournaments, Ratchanok is usually eliminated around the quarterfinals or before then. While Busanan may have great stamina, is pretty toothless in offense and provides a lack of variety in her game. Thus, Thailand's badminton crew is far from guaranteeing a medal. I can agree that Panipak is a favorite to win gold. But with the periodical lockdowns in Thailand, who knows if she has enough training or not. While I root for Thailand, since is my parent's homeland, I have to be realistic about their chances and the downward trajectory of their sports development in Olympic sports in the past decade due to infrastructure and sociopolitical issues. The Indonesian user in this site, Griff, may or may not verify the accuracy of my badminton analysis.

  19. My predictions since I quite like to follow Thailand in sports Dechapol Puavaranukroh / Sapsiree Taerattetenachai - For gold (XD Badminton) Panipak Wongpattanakit- For Gold Busanan Ongbamrungphan AND/OR Ratchanok Intanon - Any medal (WS Badminton) I know the draw isn't that great but still let's hope

  29. You can rule us out of the equation for the medals. The federation decided to change the duet this season to start preparing two young girls for 2024, so they will be happy with a final. Russia and China are a lock and the only "interesting" fight is going to be Ukraine or Japan for the bronze.

Don't worry, nothing of that will give you an advantage over people here. There's just too much information circulating in this forum already. We have an specialist in almost every sport, we made dozens of prediction threads, dozens of tables and polls...

  32. There were cases of athletes receiving reallocations even after the Opening ceremony, but I guess we are living in special times right now.

  33. Yes, at this point I do not see any more athletes invited, at least for sports of 1st week, the time is running out, the hosts require a lot of necessary but also a lot of nonsensical things for which there is simply no time to do them. In those sports, I am convinced either they will simply use athletes from other disciplines as double starters or just there will be fewer competitors than the permitted quotas were distributed.

  35. Slovakia received two invitations during last night (Andrej Martin M Singles & Anna Karolína Schmiedlová W Singles). However after quick consultation with both players refused both of the quotas for logical lack of time to complete absurd Japanese administrative tasks and due to already full calendar of both players in the next weeks.

    X Games

@dcro Marin Rantes came very close to history this evening. He missed the podium in men’s park by one place. I believe (not certain) he would have been the first Croatian to win a medal at the Summer X Games had he made it onto the podium. It’s also rather impossible to know he close he was to doing that since X Games doesn’t post explicit scores under their new scoring format (the riders are just given a final rank based on overall impression over multiple runs during a jam session).

  38. Another interesting poll @Fly_like_a_don, thanks for all your effort! Only 9 left Most difficult choices for me were vs and vs . But that's also because I don't know many athletes from these countries I guess.

  44. next, IOC will "advise" parents to only give birth to twins (1 boy , 1 girl) . giving birth to a boy is against gender equality. Bach really feels like he is the king of the universe. he can order whatever he wants.
