  1. I remember having a discussion years ago with someone, I think it was at the 2010 Asian Games where we were discussing where Iran can improve its chances to gain medals (particularly outside of combat sports). My suggestion was shooting, due to them having a base structure at the time and the fact it was a lot easier for women to enter the sport (more medal opportunities). Seeing their improvement over the years despite their difficulties has been inspiring. Congratulations.
  2. Overall, India won the most quotas, six which is impressive since they already qualified nine going into the Asian Championships. This allowed them to pass South Korea for second place in Asia. Also doing well are Japan (though all of those just replaced the host quota) and Thailand with five each and Iran with four. In total, 16 nations qualified at least one quota.
  3. Looking over their selection policies, there isn't one for modern pentathlon, one of the few sports without one. I guess the Olympic committee thought they had no chance at qualifying
  4. Here are the favourites for the quotas based on MQS list (white flag means it will be reallocated) Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions - Men's 10m Air Rifle - Men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol - Men's 10m Air Pistol - Men's Trap - Men's Skeet - Women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions - Women's 10m Air Rifle - Women's 25m Pistol - Women's 10m Air Pistol - Women's Trap - Women's Skeet - Northern Africa remains supreme! Senegal and South Africa (if they compete) have chances. Anyone else would need to have a secret ace up their sleeves.
  5. No the athlete, must get the MQS during the competition for the nation the be awarded the quota.
  6. Typically, it's the combat sports (though as Australia gets better it is becoming less frequent), weightlifting and men's rugby sevens. After that it comes down to individual athletes, Kable can hang with the best in men's trap (though I don't think he's favoured to win this time) while Vanuatu's women's beach volleyball team could historically take on Australia (now they're getting a bit old too). In the end wondering why the Pacific nations can't hang with Australia/New Zealand is the same as wondering why San Marino can't compete with Italy, it's truly a David vs. Goliath scenario.
  7. That's quite common in Oceania continental events, it's expensive to compete, especially if you have no chance to win.
  8. The format is quite confusing due to the organizers keeping eligible to qualify nations separate from the other teams, but all teams will have a chance at winning the tournament. Basically the winner of the international arm will play the winner of the Olympic arm for the Oceania title
  9. Yeah, the two quotas should have been in trap
  10. Yeah, it's unlikely we'll see any of the team sports dropped outside of the Olympics being forced to shrink in size or if another team sport like baseball/softball or cricket surpasses the worldwide distribution relative to the current team sports, but regardless you don't want to be on that chopping block.
  11. It's quite clear FIH prioritizes top teams over universality. Even ignoring the top 20 continent reallocation rule, the fact they seeded the away teams to prevent Austria or Russia to play New Zealand or Canada shows the federation only wanted the top ~15 teams (even if Austria/Russia beating New Zealand/Canada would have been a long shot). While there is nothing wrong with wanting top teams competing, it does showcase the lack of depth field hockey has which could play a factor should the Olympics look to cut team sports (though I imagine water polo would more likely be on the chopping block, but FINA does have a lot more pull...)
  12. We'll see, but it does look like Australia brought their "A" game. At least it's impossible for them to win all of the quotas as they have already won two in the women's trap.
  13. Qualification document More specific... A quota place can only be obtained if the result achieved by the athlete or Mixed Team in the qualifying competition where the quota is obtained is equal to or higher than the MQS for that event.
  14. Assuming Germany and Great Britain get the job done. Should Ireland defeat Canada then if South Africa withdraws it would go to South Korea.
  15. They're no Argentina, but they are top 4 in Pan America.
  16. Except if you read the document, declined quotas are reallocated to the same event, not the multiple athlete pot. Likewise the document above states Belarus received the host reallocation.
  17. Argentina got its quota from the Czech Republic (Spain declined while France's athlete is already qualified in the K2 1000m). Spain's unused quota really should have gone to Sweden in the K1 200m and if Sweden declined it, it should have gone to Russia in the K1 200m and while that would mean Russia has two kayak men quotas, neither of them competed in the K2 1000m so the whole "athlete qualified in another boat" thing won't count. While it doesn't mean much in terms of number of athletes, it's significant because athletes must compete in the boat their athlete quota was qualified in.
  18. True, but they may try to qualify it on the off-chance someone decides to outperform them and decline it if no one does. It probably won't happen, but they could.
  19. If they want, both Brazil and the United States could still qualify in the K1 at the Pan American qualification.
  20. and picked K1 so the C1 quotas were reallocated to and and picked C1 so the K1 quotas were reallocated to and
  21. Yeah, at the end of the day, everyone knew the rules (as dumb as they were) well in advance. The point was to create depth for the sport, oppose to nations only having four athletes each. Here's hoping for a 16-team tournament in the future with continental qualifiers so that the best can have an opportunity to qualify.
  22. So despite being second in the rankings I made yesterday the Canadian women don't even qualify to the Olympic qualification tournament
  23. I was bored, here is what the top 10 would look like if we only used the top 4 players from each nation (I only looked at the top 1000 players). Men 1. Serbia - 6,234,720 2. Latvia - 6,036,160 3. United States - 4,971,879 4. Slovenia - 4,555,680 5. Lithuania - 4,475,760 6. Canada - 4,006,120 7. Netherlands - 3,964,080 8. Russia - 3,162,320 9. Mongolia - 2,714,920 10. Switzerland - 2,519,560 Women 1. France - 2,176,360 2. Canada - 1,549,480 3. Russia - 1,438,010 4. Italy - 1,393,680 5. China - 1,389,720 6. Spain - 1,361,900 7. Netherlands - 1,264,200 8. Poland - 1,150,100 9. Japan - 1,121,503 10. United States - 1,012,950 Both genders only have one team (Serbia and Russia) which overlaps with the current ranking list. Additionally, the host quota would go to the women. For those curious, in the men's ranking China is ranked 12th while Japan is ranked 14th and in the women's rankings Romania is 13th while Mongolia is 17th. I'm surprised how well Canada is doing, though I knew they were trying to send a quality team. Hopefully they will compete in the qualification tournament, though it will be hard to defeat the European teams.
