  1. So what happens if one of them wins the European quota?
  2. Well Mongolia looks very safe, especially with the rule that only a maximum of two nations from the same continent can qualify via this method.
  3. The Oceania Championship begins this weekend. One thing to note is that athletes must achieve the MQS DURING the event in order to be eligible for the quota. This may allow for athletes which finished at a lower final ranking to obtain the quota and it is quite likely that quotas may have to be reallocated. Looking at the MQS list, there are no Oceania nations which have achieved a MQS in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions (where two quotas are suppose to be given) and only one athlete has reached the mark previously in the men's 10m air pistol and women's 25m pistol. Additionally, the only non-Australia/New Zealand nation to have reached a MQS mark previously is Fiji in the men's trap, though he will have a lot competition as it's the event with the most depth.
  4. That's denying the fact that badminton's strength has been in Asia for decades now. In a Commonwealth Games perspective wrestling is now pretty much a Canada/India/Nigeria show, not exactly universally diverse (other than we have three nations from three continents competing for medals).
  5. There are "non-white" core sports; badminton, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. The non-Olympic core sports make sense from a Commonwealth point of view. Cricket should be a core sport too, but that's a whole different issue. As for shooting, I just think it's because it has never been a priority for nations. Like if you asked all nations to pick their top three sports I don't think shooting would feature on many lists, but at the same time most people were fine with it being on the program. No doubt it's the most high profile sport on the optional list, but as host nations face more pressure to cut costs, optional sports not popular with the country will likely face the chopping block. Look at track cycling in South Africa's bid, the only reason they changed their mind was because other nations/organizations were going to essentially pay for the venue.
  6. Finally got around to updating the athlete database on my website. Below are athletes not yet listed which achieved a top 8 result in an Olympic event at a World Championship dating back to 2017. Albania – Evagjelia Veli (Weightlifting, Women’s -59kg) American Samoa – Josh Failauga (Wrestling, Men’s Freestyle -57kg) Benin – Odile Ahouanwanou (Athletics, Women’s Heptathlon) Bosnia and Herzegovina – Nedzad Husic (Taekwondo, Men’s -68kg) Turkmenistan – Kristina Sermetowa (Weightlifting, Women’s -55kg) For your "qualifies by merit" restriction, are you counting only World Qualifiers or would qualifying via Continent Qualifiers be enough?
  7. I agree, as long as you acknowledge that it wasn't done as an anti-India thing, but a pro-England thing.
  8. Yeah, if England wanted to strengthen their position they would have gotten rid of swimming (I know they can't). In the end their only competitor (especially as hosts) is Australia. Shooting is an optional sport and the host wanted to save money. I do hope this experience will get the shooting federations to push it to be a core sport. Especially since both triathlon and wrestling are core sports and have less depth than shooting.
  9. Day 1 Results Men 3 - 0 3 - 1 Women 3 - 0 3 - 0
  10. Pretty much. I think they have three athletes that have met the minimum requirements, though I'll have to double check.
  11. Event starts in about an hour. Results can be seen here
  12. Kuwait was likely a bottom seed due to their inactivity over the past few years, which allowed Hong Kong and India to be placed in the same group.
  13. Looks like FIBA has been reading our complaints
  14. Is anyone else competing outside of Group F or will we see four South Africans performing one after the other?
  15. To be fair, the men would have a similar issue if 18 nations weren't automatically given a quota. If the same thing happened to the women (ranks 23-40 qualified one athlete). Only three nations would have used the individual quota.
  16. Adding more athletes past 100 would hurt them as lower ranked athletes would steal points from higher ranked athletes. I'm not sure if it would be more beneficial to have all 100 athletes compete in the same tournament or if it would be better to split them in multiple concurrent smaller tournaments.
  17. Yeah, it's weird that they haven't updated the Olympic ranking, but they have updated the world ranking (which for this week should be the same)
  18. They still have a week to pass China who seems to be idled. They will have to play non-stop though.
  19. That has more to do with the qualification system. Just because a nation has good road cyclists doesn't mean they are good in the time trial (or vice versa). Alternatively they should have given continent quotas like they did in road cycling.
  20. Looks like Belarus replaced Ukraine in the women's ranking (I assume the world and nations ranking will be the same for this week)
  21. Luxembourg only had 1 time trial rider, but yes it will be replaced as they are the 30th ranked nation. Same thing happened in the women's with Japan replacing France.
  22. Looks like they used the rankings from last week and not this week which hasn't been updated yet. Additionally, they forgot a second Asian athlete must compete in the men's time trial (Iran will replace Luxembourg)
  23. South Africa will be the favourite, but they will decline the quota. Kenya is number two in the region, but they need to avoid South Africa until the final.
