So apparently Paraguay won the men's title?

If he manages to repeat this result next year, it will be Paraguay's first gold ever at the Pan American Games!

At the start of this video Thiago himself pronounces his name:

If he is going to be a somebody in Tennis (which he plans to achieve starting next year) this will be such a confusing name

Glad Osaka won, and unlike many of the talents that won GS titles in the last few years, I think she has the potential to win many many more.

Which is why it's so sad when she goes on a drama-spree again. She has such incredible talent and can (and did) inspire so many people with that. Why taint that with behaviour like this? I'm sure for many people she'll be remembered as someone with awful behaviour here and there and everywhere, which for someone of her talent is just sad to let it go that far.

So I know that many of you probably don’t keep up on American news, but there is a truly saddening story I feel the need to share. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ THIS, OR NOTHING CHANGES.

So recently in Colorado there was a 9 year old boy that committed suicide. It has come out that over the summer he told his mom he was gay, and she supported his decision as any good parent would. However, the kid felt so accepted and loved by his family that he decided to tell his classmates. His classmates responses were bullying and tuants such as, “you should kill yourself”. Unfortunately, after 4 days of this insanity, that is what Jamel Myles decided to do.

He killed himself becuase of the way people treated him. These were kids who convinced Jamel to kill himself, kids! What has my country come to, mass shooting one day, suicide the next, police brutality the day after, and then good old thoughts and prayers to wrap it up from Congress. I know that I am coming to the age where I have the power to speak out, but I find myself worried because of the terrible that have happened.

This is forum has been a blessing for me, (finding like me, who share my passions) because I have social issues that stem from early childhood bullying just like Jamel. This issue hits me in the heart, hard. I’ve noticed before some hate speech about the LGBTQ+ community on this forum. I know it’s even forced certain members to hide themselves away, and out of discussions. Now I understand that there are many diverse cultures represented in this forum, but I ask (and demand) kindly that people think about the words they post, before they post them. You never know who many be part of a certain community, group, religion, or people. It would be unfair to them, and to the uniting force of sport, to shame these people for who they are. Sports are for everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, status. etc., or at least should be. So in conclusion let us keep this forum a fun, open, exciting, excepting space for all users and sports fans to enjoy, so that there has to be no more Jamel’s.

Except for "Suadero", each and every one is the best, depending on your mood and personal taste.

I would personally suggest you try "Pozole" (a broth made of pork and maize, many regional styles), "Tacos al Pastor" (seasoned pork slowly grilled like kebabs) "Enchiladas" (a tortilla filled with cheese & onion or chicken, dipped in sauce and slightly fried) and "Tamales Oaxaqueños" (pork or chicken seasoned in sauce, wrapped in corn "dough", which is wrapped in banana leafs and steamed)

Forgot to add: "Tortas Ahogadas" is the traditional dish of my city, as the bread can only be made in Guadalajara due to a combination of the city's climate and the particular yeasts used to make the bread, which is filled with fried pork meat, and then drenched (that's why they're called ahogadas, which means drowned) in tomate sauce and hot pepper sauce.

WE'VE QUALIFIED! I travelled to Newport for the match, a great atmosphere and I met Beth Mead after the game!

We have one more game but whatever happens we have qualified for the tournament. It is against Kazakhstan and for some reason the fourth official is Kazakh.

But I don't think that was the problem here. I seriously think that they thought they would qualify even sending a subpar team (exactly like they did with the women's team). But even Argentina and Brazil young teams are better than the one they sent.

Volleyball will have a big coverage for sure, Peru loves this sport. On the other hand, I remember Handball wasn't broadcast in Toronto (except for the argentine channel), and I fear the same next year, even though this is a qualification event for Tokyo.

There's still one more event to go, but here is some initial stats on the performance of nations in non-Olympic events.

First I removed all non-Olympic sports, except for roller sports, which I only kept skateboarding. I also removed events from Olympic sports that are not in the Olympics with the following exceptions. In boxing, weightlifting and wrestling all weightclasses were kept and in karate the men's and women’s +84kg and +68kg respectively were kept to simulate the +75kg and +61kg events.

    Medals won in non-Olympic Events
    1.   - 63
    2.   - 59
    3.   - 52
    4.   - 34
    5.   - 32
    6.   - 25
    7.   - 24
    8.   - 23
    8.   - 23
    8.   - 23
    11. - 22

Everyone else won fewer than 20 medals in non-Olympic events. Not too surprising that Indonesia won the most medals. Bahrain, Iraq and Syria were the only nations to have won medals, but none in non-Olympic events. Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Nepal only won medals in non-Olympic events. Of course putting down total medals is a bit unfair for larger nations. Powerhouses like China are expected to do well in all sports so it's expected that they would also win more medals in non-Olympic sports.

Here I calculated the probability that a nation would have earned their number of Olympic event medals (or fewer) over the total medals won. A lower number meant it was unlikely and that the nation likely benefited from non-Olympic events.

    1.   0.0000000076%
    2.   0.0049%
    3.   0.0087%
    4.   0.049%
    5.   0.12%
    6.   0.35%
    7.   0.84%
    8.   2.46%
    9.   3.34%
    10. 4.39%

Everyone else was at a 10% chance or higher. 8/10 nations that benefited from non-Olympic events were Southeast Asian nations, likely due to Indonesia's influence. The nations that saw significantly little to no benefit from the added events were Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Japan, China, North Korea, Qatar and Kazakhstan.

Same with Brazil. Our senior women's team is very good, but I don't even know if we have an active youth team - even the qualification was achieved by the senior team, which is really strange but just shows the lack of competitions for youth teams in women's futsal.

It's a little mind boggling that FIFA doesn't really shows many interest in women's futsal, but hopefully that is changing.

We have the first draw of a team sport, and it's futsal:

    Boys
    Group A -

    Group B -

    Girls
    Group C -

    Group D -

Apparently Brazil rejected the girls quota last minute. Wikipedia says it was because "they chose to compete in boys futsal" but that makes no sense because in beach handball, rugby and field hockey there are some nations that will play both genders! plus, Brazil didn't qualify for any other girl team sport, so they aren't binded by the "only one team sport for each gender" rule that all countries except us have to follow.
The same happened to Iran girls, is there some special rule for futsal that I don't know about?

In addition to all the things already explained, brazilian Handball also lost the sponsorship of Banco do Brasil, which was HUGE. Even though the bank didn't said it, it was pretty clear that this cut was because of the corrupt handball federation. The sport still is receiving money from other sources, but will have to be more careful with its expenses from now on

vinipereira got a reaction from rafalgorka in How Many Athletes will Your Nation Qualify for the Summer Olympic Games 2020?
Brazilian Olympic Committee wants to qualify 250 athletes for the Tokyo Olympics. I mostly agree with this number, even though I think they're a little optimistic.

    Archery: 4 2 1
Brazil should qualify an athlete for each of the individual events (and with some luck, maybe even a men's team)

    Artistic Swimming: 2 0 0
Federation doesn't seem to have much interest in this sport anymore and Brazil got worse in both events. A duet might be possible but even at the South American Games we didn't win gold.

    Athletics: 50 40 30
I have no idea but I will guess a number close to the last World Championship (39).

    Badminton: 2 1 1
Ygor Coelho should qualify in Men's Singles.

    Baseball: 0

    Basketball: 12 0 0
It's sad but we probably won't see our female team at the Olympics for the first time since 1992. The men's team might qualify but I wouldn't bet on it. The federation has zero interest about 3x3 so no chance of qualification there.

    Beach Volleyball: 8 8 4
Brazil will easily reach the maximum quota here.

    Boxing: 6 3 2
Most of the best athletes from the last Olympic cycles are gone, but we should at least qualify 2 men and 1 woman.

    Canoeing - Slalom: 3 2 1
We should qualify 1 man (maybe 2) and 1 woman.

    Canoeing - Sprint: 6 5 3
Brazil has the potential to qualify a full team in Canoe (4 to 6 athletes). As for Kayak, I'm not sure about our chances.

    Cycling - BMX: 2 2 1
1 athlete from each gender. None for Freestyle.

    Cycling - Mountain Bike: 3 2 2
1 athlete from each gender (maybe even 2 men).

    Cycling - Road: 4 2 2
At least 1 for each gender, but maybe even more.

    Cycling - Track: 2 1 0
    1 athlete? Maybe none.

    Diving: 3 1 0
Oof. That's a rough one. Most athletes from previous cycles are gone and the new generation is not that great. Maybe Ingrid Oliveira qualified, but I wouldn't be surprised if not.

    Equestrian: 11 9 6
Eventing and Jumping teams, I guess? + 1 in Dressage.

    Fencing: 8 6 4
1 Men's team (Foil?) + 3 individual athletes is possible.

    Field Hockey: 0

    Football: 36 18 18
Women's team is already qualified. As for the men, it will be harder (only 2 qualification spots for South America and Brazil's under-20 team is not really that good).

    Golf: 2 1 1
    No idea, maybe 1 man.

    Gymnastics - Artistic: 8 8 5
Both teams have a decent chance of qualifying, but I don't think we will qualify individual athletes that are not part of the teams (unless, of course, if one of the teams doesn't qualify).

    Gymnastics - Rhythmic: 6 0 0
It's hard to qualify in both events, but with the addition of Continental Championships as qualifications events, Brazil has a shot in groups. Gáudio is also better than she used to be in the individual event, so who knows...

    Gymnastics - Trampoline: 1 0 0
    Extremely hard qualification.

    Handball: 28 14 14
Even if our level is not the same, I don't think we'll have much trouble in qualifying the women's team. About the men, it's always 50/50.

    Judo: 14 12 10
Some time ago, I would say Brazil could qualify a full team here, but right now we're really bad in some of the men's events.

    Karate: 4 2 2
Difficult qualification but Brazil has 3 athletes among the best in world rankings, which could indicate that they will at least qualify to Tokyo.

    Modern Pentathlon: 2 1 0
Nobody close to the level of Yane Marques but continental qualification might help us.

    Rowing: 3 1 0
Probably the one sport in which Brazil had zero progress in the last decade, not even with the home Olympics. But even being bad at this sport we usually manage to qualify a few athletes.

    Rugby Sevens: 12 12 0
The women's team will probably qualify.

    Sailing: 10 9 8
5 athletes (3 boats) are already qualified. 8 or 9 athletes (for a total of 6 or 7 boats) are very much possible.

    Shooting: 4 3 2
3 to 4 men are possible, I guess?

    Skateboarding: 10 8 6
Realistically, Brazil should qualify 2 athletes for each event (maybe even 3 in Street)

    Softball: 0

    Sport Climbing: 0

    Surfing: 4 4 3
    Full quota.

    Swimming: 24 20 16
Like in the last world championships, Brazil should have a moderate number of athletes competing in the pool. It's likely that we'll also qualify 2 athletes in Marathon Swimming.

    Table Tennis: 6 4 4
Men's team + at least one athlete in Women's Singles (team is also possible).

    Taekwondo: 3 2 1
Very hard qualification. 1 man and maybe 1 woman should qualify.

    Tennis: 5 3 2
Dire situation in Men's Singles (I don't think we will qualify anyone via ranking, unless there is massive withdrawals). Men's Doubles and maybe 1 woman (Haddad Maia) can qualify.

    Triathlon: 2 2 1
1 athlete for each individual event.

    Volleyball: 24 24 24
Only a disaster could prevent Brazil of qualifying both teams.

    Water Polo: 11 0 0
Difficult for the men's team. Impossible for the women.

    Weightlifting: 4 2 1
Federation is too messy and is basically preventing some athletes of achieve better results. Reis should qualify but otherwise nothing is certain (probably 1 woman).

    Wrestling: 3 2 1
Qualification of 2 women is possible.

    Total Sports: 35

    Optimistic Total Athletes: 352

    Realistic Total Athletes: 236

    Pessimistic Total Athletes: 176
