Germany’s pretty succesfull in endurance swimming events. Perhaps the German doping authorities have overlooked those athletes?
 
There is of course an alternative explanation to the one you keep hinting at. Possibly the German Rowing Federation is just not very good.

The Dutch team was above expectation in the last two matches of the EuCh.
Probably not enough for direct qualification now, but promising for next year’s sprint for World `Ranking points.

Turkey aren’t unbeatable. They had lots of trouble playing Belgium (without their star player). The victories over Italy and Serbia were deserved, but narrow, and these matches could quite easily have gone the other way.

Looking at the draw,, I was convinced that we could get to the semi-final, to then be hammered by the top teams. The GS matches were pretty awful, the QF against Bulgaria was much better. The matches Friday and today seem to suggest that the team is much better than expected. 

Seems very unlikely that European countries outside UK and Ireland would chose cricket over Baseball. Both are minority sports, but Baseball seems the more popular on the continent 

Against France the result was 3 - 1 and we could easily have lost more sets against weak opposition. We were helped enormously by a very favorable draw, compared for instance to Belgium. Partly the result of course of finishing 4th two years ago (while IIRC Belgium failed to qualify for the knock out fase).

by far our best and most stabile match was against the on paper strongest opponent. The semi finale will show if this was the result of our high level, as the TV commentator stated, or, as I suspect, the weakness of Bulgaria who seemed to not cope with the pressure.

Everyone here who dismissed this as a minor issue or as being overblown really needs to do some serious soul searching imo.

Race walking is largely seen as a joke event in the United States. There might be a bigger following for cornhole and/or spikeball. The few people aware of it spend a lot time making comments like you said.

Germany has a much larger population than France and one might assume much more athletes to monitor. But the French and German budgets are apparantly comparable.

I feel like many here *vastly* over estimate their countries chances before the games/events, so when they don’t reach those unrealistic projections, it feels like a disappointment to the posters

Yeah, NOS has switched to a commentator for field events (who does indeed do cycling and short track as well, sadly), who is trying to create his own 'legend' by absolutely constantly making up weird sentences and wordplays, instead of doing his job and spontaneously have some nice stuff in between
 
It's almost as annoying as a lot of English-language commentators in car racing, where it feels like all of them (except for Martin Haven) have an extreme need of having some recognizable 'logo' as a sentence. "And it's pedal to the metal, and it's go go go go go go!" from one of them at every single start, or "And it's eyes to the lights and foot to the floor!" from another, also at every single start.
 
I am so super glad Eurosport finally has athletics rights back after six long years, Dutch Eurosport is blessed with a fantastic commentator there (who also does cross-country skiing in the winter and sometimes biathlon), who is already great on his own and even better with his Eurosport co-commentator (a manager of lots and lots of especially middle to long distance runners, so the amount of inside knowledge he has is incredible). They're great in terms of athletics stuff, but they also work amazingly well together, clearly enjoying what they're doing, bashing each other lightheartedly if there's some wrong prediction or something and just overall having fun while informing us viewers of everything we should know.
