I am really surprised by some of the comments on here. I remember before the start of the competition some canadian user said that the canadian men (all sports combined) might not win a single medal in Tokyo and now that they already have 5 medals there are still complaints ... I would really like to see the predictions by those people ... personally i only expected one silver medal for Canada here (by Warner), so for me Canada is way overperforming already, but maybe thats just me ... I think if Canada could win 2 or 3 medals in athletics in Tokyo it would be a great result for them and i wouldnt bet anything on them winning more medals than that.

Yeah, that was kind of my point, he isnt too old to get back to the top. I dont think that you can say that he is looking good to "remain the king". Whoever wins the title is the king, so currently Kaul is the king. We dont know by how much Kaul will improve next year (this year he improved by more than 400 points), but of course Mayer still is the clear favorite for Tokyo. Still we cant forget that a) this is the second big competition in a row where he didnt get a result and b) he still needs to get the qualifying mark for Tokyo next year and he said that he cant do 2 decathlons in one year, so it might be kind of tricky for him to plan the next year.

Yeah, all of that might be true, but i was talking about the perspective from before the start of this competition. I think "back then" many/most people favored Thompson/SAFP over DAS and Thiam over KJT. Of course after the javelin throw Kaul was the favorite for gold, but before the start of the competition noone thought that he could win gold.

If you really predicted DAS to win 200 m gold, then good for you. I thought SAFP or Thompson would win the gold, but then they withdrew. I also considered Thiam the favorite for gold, but again, if you predicted gold for KJT then congrats. I hope that after the end of the world championships all predicitions will be revealed so that we will see what other people thought who the favorite was.

Certainly the most unexpected world champion here. Thanks to this gold Germany is now only 1 bronze behind schedule.

Both were favorites for silver, but i dont think anyone expected gold from DAS or KJT and i dont see either of them winning gold in Tokyo.

I would say GB and Austria are the two most overperforming nations here so far alongside Jamaica and China.

Am i the only one who thinks that the artistic gymnastics world championship is one of the most difficult competitions to predict? I looked at the results of the 2018 edition and i feel like half of the medalists from last year aren't even competing here and the world cup results arent a very good predictor either.

Really "interesting" world championships for Jamaica. Now that the heat is off of them and on Kenya instead, they are stronger than ever and in a lot of new events like women's triple jump, women's shot put, men's discus throw and men's long jump.

No, i remember very well, i still think that the attendance was better and if they would have handed out free tickets, the attendance probably would have been even better. It just doesnt make much sense in my opinion to give the competition to some country with a population of a city in order to make the sport more global, when you could give the competition to much bigger countries where you could actually inspire a significant amount of people. There is a lot of untapped potential in Vietnam/Philippines/Indonesia/Turkey/Brazil/South Africa, in Qatar not so much.

I agree, very weird development by them. Then again we know the methods they are using in cross country skiing, so it shouldnt be too surprising that they became that good in running recently.

I just hope that neither Shkurenyov nor Warner win the gold, Uibo winning gold would be fine with me.

I am glad for those spectators. For some of them it probably is the first meal in a long time. Some people said that giving the world championships to Qatar was good for developing this sport, but by that logic it would have made much more sense to give the world championships to big countries like Brazil, Vietnam, Turkey, Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa, Kenya or Ethiopia.

Very weird that Kaul just stopped jumping without a single fail. I think he could have jumped over 5.10 m or even 5.20 m. I hope that he wont miss a medal/gold by that margin.

Even if Kaul doesnt win gold, Germany still has 3 gold medal chances. It would be disappointing if none of them would become reality. China has been good in athletics in the past, but now they are super strong with already 8 medals.

I am very sorry for them, but not sure how you can say that this is a loss for the competition? In terms of quality? Yes. In terms of suspense/entertainment? No.

Miracle world championships for Canada! Now they got a gold medal out of nowhere incoming! Very sad for Mayer, the 2nd year in a row where he cant finish the most important competition of the season.

Very bad situation for Mayer. He still needs to get the olympic qualifying mark, so he somehow needs to finish this competition, given that he said that he cant do two competitions in one year. Would be very tragic if he wouldnt be in Tokyo.

I am not sure you can conclude anything from what Grassmarket said. I am not sure he even is from GB, considering that he writes more comments related to Germany than to GB. Still i have to agree that british people often have their "own mind" and therefore a lot of people in Europe are often irritated by their behavior. You often get the feeling that british people, or at least their politicians, are still stuck in the past and are overestimating the importance of GB in the world. I have never been to GB, but from what i heard there are a lot of beautiful places over there and most people i have spoken to said that the people are very nice and often have a great sense of humor.

I think GB will be the best european nation in the medal table. Poland will probably end this competition with 1 gold. France should get 1 gold at best. Germany could end up with 3 golds or 0. GB already has 1 gold and could end up with 4 or even 5 golds, although 2 or 3 golds seem more likely for them. Surprising to see that GB could win the european medal table here, considering that i expect France and Poland and maybe also Germany to win more golds in Tokyo.

What a stinker by Victor ... Amazing competition in termes of entertainment, but also really weird to see Mayer and Victor in trouble. Rarely we see such an open decathlon. I hope that Kaul keeps his nerves and somehow gets 4.80 m or at least 4.70 m in pole vault, then he might have a small chance for a medal. Edit: Weird championships for France. Their 2 gold medal favorites Diniz and Mayer didnt/dont perform as expected and on the other hand they got surprising medals in mens hammer throw and mens 110 m hurdles.
