  1. I hope the community won’t be splintered with all these subforums. I quite like things as they are.

  2. Slightly off-topic, but it's a good of a thread like any. It's like a totally different place here today (not the forum, but the country here ) Remember 2 weeks ago, when i left the office and said, that only 1-2 of my colleagues were semi excited/interested in the Olympics. Well, i go to work today and people were buzzing. Now they know names, know events, they talk "Did you watch this, did you saw that". It's like i was in the Twilight zone Also it was mentioned that record number of young people were talking about it on the social media these past few days, with the unofficial title being "So, this is what having success in sport feels like. We don't have to rely only on our parents and grandparents stories." And i actually saw people defending our athletes, that didn't do that good. Because all of our medals were won by women, there are funny comments like "When is the Olympics for men starting?", "Have the men been left in the kitchen?" etc. And our past few delegations were usually labeled as tourists, going on a free vacation. Just like a week before Tokyo again. Now, all of a sudden, there are hardly any tourists and the ones that say that are countered with "They did their best" and "Even competing is a big success". Things are very bizarre

  4. I agree, the international nature of the forum is what appeals to me. I love reading about what Irish, Greek, Polish, Brazilian, Italian, etc, etc. athletes achieve!

  5. Also in favour of removing athletics, everyone can run, jump or throw different kinds of stuff.

  6. I just realised we are drawing ever closer to the next big event of the year (after the Paralympics of course ).....

  7. Definitely both. Triathlon is another fine exemple of that. A sort of UK Sport has been set up a couple years ago (Agence Nationale du Sport) mainly to tackle the high performance sector of french sport. Former - very successful - handball NT coach Claude Onesta is leading it. I like his talk and I believe he has the right ideas in mind, yet he is facing an old system (a quasi socialist one tbf) that it's very difficult to move. People care, but the public discussion is mainly about funding or very long-term issues (like the already mentioned sport at school). Our system has become inefficient and doesn't know how to peak at the right time (the olympics). On that last point, we still could make a big difference by 2024. Hopefully, the right questions will be asked by the right people.

  8. Tokyo 2020 is coming to an end, I hope you enjoyed following them here in Totallympics! I know not everything was perfect, there were some nightly downs of the forum in the first days and some posts had to be deleted because of abusive behavior by certain users, but I think this is something will always happen on a populated forum. As always, since tomorrow the focus will switch to Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024, we want to be the first to start following the 2024 Olympic qualifications so I hope after some days of Olympic detoxification you will all be back on Totallympics and follow sports with us! In the next weeks, there will be some little forum’s software updates which I postponed to avoid problems just before the Olympics, and we will also move on a stronger server, to avoid forum’s down during traffic’s peaks. I will also have lots of hosting space, so I have thought I can create national sub-domain forums for the nations with lots of users who think their national thread is not enough. For example, I will try to launch https://italia.totallympics.com/, where Italian fans will have their own forum, in the same format of Totallympics but only for Italian fans who can write in Italian. This will allow the Italian community to grow independently in their own forum, and I’m sure Italians who want to interact with the rest of the world will keep using the “international” Totallympics as they are doing now. The great advantage comparing to the National threads is that everything would be more organized, with sections, threads etc., just like here. I chose the Italian example because I know how and where to search for Italian fans interested in the forum. But if any of you is interested I can create other nations’ sub-domains. I will setup the forum in the same format of Totallympics, then of course I would need one person (or more) who will take care of that forum and its development. You don’t need to be skilled with information technology because dealing with the forum is really simple and I could help you, the “difficult” part would be to start a community from scratch. That’s why I am mostly thinking to nations which already have lots of users on Totallympics, but if you are a country’s single member and you know how to bring your country’s people on the national forum once this will be ready, then we can obviously give a try. I think for many countries there are Facebook groups of Olympic fans or some small Olympic forums/websites here and there, and if you can potentially “move” them on Totallympics national forum then it would be easy for your community to grow, and then more people would start joining the forum when they find it on google. It will not be easy, but it might be an exciting experience and not a lot of your time is needed for that. So if any of you is interested to be the “community manager” (this word might be exaggerated, linkedin style ) of her/his country, feel free to contact me anytime via private message and we will start talking about the plan. I will not be able to pay you for that role, but of course I would give you the hosting for free so you would have no expenses of any sort, and you can always count on my help. Thank you everyone who contributed here during Tokyo 2020 and get ready for the next Olympic cycle!

  10. Aleksandra Mirosław in sports climbing - women's speed event. In Tokyo she was 4th in combined event but she had WR in speed, wasn't able to perform well in boulder and lead though. In Paris speed will be a seperate event so she is the biggest favourite for gold now. But a lot of can happen during these 3 years obviously and she will have strong opponents within Polish team as well. Polish girls are very strong in this event.

  11. I'm planning to go as well. Like dcro I would say go for a maximum of 2 events per day and seriously consider if it's smart to go for 2 if one is some distance from the central parts, especially if you're going for handball (which is in Lille) And don't expect to get all the tickets you hope. I got little less than half the tickets I tried getting for the 2012 Games. Managed to add some later but ended up with jus 1½ week in London and not the full duration. And certainly. Be quick getting a room when it's possible about a year before. I wouldn't be that worried about transportation a long time before other than making sure you can make it from one venue to another if you go for more than one event a day. And last, consider going for something you wouldn't think you would watch. I had a blast when I spontaneously got tickets for MTB and women's freestyle wrestling in London!

  12. Yes, getting tickets for the events which are the most interesting for me will be the hardest part. I remember how it was with UEFA EURO 2012 here in Poland. That was tough but after some ups and downs we even managed to get tickets for a semifinal in Warsaw. vs MARIO BALOTELLI destroyed the German team there! That was fun.

  20. I was looking at other nations numbers and Germany seems to have the exact same problem than us witch very similar numbers. Since 2012, on average, they have 'lost' 6 medals and 2.8 golds each winter and summer olympics vs the last world championships (-5.6 and -2.4 for France) Now, we understand why @OlympicsFanis constantly angry.

  21. Can't disagree with most of what you've said. Initially GB had a target of 54-92 medals which was subsequently reduced to 45-70 due to the difficulties and uncertainties caused by the pandemic. Personally I was expecting a tally in the low 50s while secretly hoping for something in the high 50s so 65 exceeded my expectations and comfortably met UK Sport's target. Indeed but for the Covid forced withdrawal of Amber Hill and injuries to one or two key athletes like KJT they might easily have surpassed Rio which would have been a remarkable achievement and worthy of a 10/10 score. Sports like boxing (+3), equestrian (+2), modern pentathlon (+2), sailing (+2) which have always been reliable contributors to GB medal hauls stood tall, while swimming (+2) has proven a growing area of strength. Cycling, diving, taekwondo and triathlon also continued with their solid contributions which was particularly satisfying in the case of the former as there were concerns about a drop off in success on two wheels. Growth in MTB and both BMX racing and freestyle helped to prevent that. The three sports that saw significant falls were rowing (-3), canoeing (-2) and gymnastics (-4). Rowing had internal problems and there were suggestions that their high altitude training had gone wrong. It was also a hugely inexperienced squad with 80% newcomers. Margins are small and if they had turned some of their six fourth places into medals they would not be facing the level of criticism they have received. Most of GB's success in canoeing has come from slalom and in Tokyo I don't believe they had their strongest men's team. The selection process used saw the elimination of then reigning Olympic champion Joe Clarke and multiple medallist David Florence both of whom would I believe have strengthened the team. Gymnastics is an increasingly competitive sport as we see the spread of medals among different countries increase every cycle. The question facing some countries is do we concentrate on winning team or individual apparatus medals. The strongest can do both while the less strong probably aren't going to challenge for team medals anyway and should target individual apparatus. I think GB managed to fall between the two choices leaving question marks about their selections. I may be wrong but I believe they are returning to five member teams in 2024 so that should help solve some of the selection quandries. GB performed at about par in athletics with six medals although we missed out on gold for the first time since Atlanta. On the downside were the injuries to KJT, DAS and Gemili. One of my biggest frustrations in sport are the apparently never ending injuries and niggles to British track & field athletes. On the upside is the revival of British middle distance running with medals in both men's and women's 1500m and women's 800m. The saddest story of this cycle from a British perspective has been the decline of the men's 400m flat and hurdles, two events in which the country has a rich history and which also applies by extension to the 4x400m relay. More support in this area and in field events should be a priority for UK Athletics. Anyway overall it's been a great games with some outstanding performances from athletes not only of GB but of many nations who have had to overcome incredibly difficult preparations. Well done Japan and well done to all the officials and helpers for delivering something to remember and lift the spirits after the traumas of the past two years.

  23. For pretty much a 9/10. Almost every sport exceeded expectations. Only Rowing was a disappointment with internal political struggles producing an under-prepared team. Shooting lost a medal favourite, Amber Hill, to COVID. Taekwondo list another medal favourite, Jade Jones to nerves & having to fight an opponent from a merged weight category. No Gold in Athletics, but Athletics is going through an era of very high standards. Otherwise, everyone far exceeded expectations. Optimistic predictions were for 15 Gold, 50 Medals total, top 10 overall. Instead 22G, 65 total - more than London 2012 - and 4th overall. Many new or unknown sports like BMX, Mountain Biking & Modern Pentathlon were introduced to the British public. Established sports like Swimming & Cycling created a new generation of fans. Many of our best competitors will be going forward to Paris, so there is lots to look forward to.

  24. There were a few missed medal chances and especially in the beginning some unfortunate things: CommunicationGate at the women's road race, one of the BMX favourites injuring his knee due to a crossing official (but yeah, then he won gold, so there's that), the whole mess against the rowing team, who still got a big medal haul despite being pushed down and down. But then again, if you've got at least 20 events with a serious medal chance, you're absolutely going to have events where you'll miss the medals. It won't mean anything for those who missed the medals, because for them it's about their medal and not someone else's, but in general the Dutch team performed incredibly well. Yes, in terms of overall medals, realistic expections were that Sydney's record of 25 medals would be shattered, so it's not a surprise at all in that sense, but it still has to...you know, happen! Even double digit gold medals for only the second time ever, behind Sydney when there were two swimming superstars, and medals in nearly a third of all sports (like in Rio), that is seriously good. The judo team underperformed immensely, which no sport will make up for as far as how they feel about it of course, but the athletics team...wow. I was realistically counting on 4-5 medals - including a gold or potentially two - if things worked well as a whole, which would've already been an incredible and historical achievement. But EIGHT athletics medals?! Sure, if really every significant possibility worked out well, who knows. As for my favourite Dutch medals (there are plenty non-Dutch among my favourites of course): Niek Kimmann's BMX gold after he injured his knee due to an official and after the semis in the hour before that went almost as dramatically bad as it could have gone for the Dutch team, except Kimmann. The 4x400m men running to silver, I truly never expected a Dutch team in that event being anywhere near the medals, despite their earlier achievements this year, and they wind up with the races of their lifetimes and achieve something so amazing. Abdi Nageeye's marathon silver, 41 years after Gerard Nijboer took silver in Moscow (in a much weaker field and much easier race, according to Nijboer himself), and while guiding his long-time friend Bashir Abdi to the Olympic podium with him! ---- I'm going for 8/10, because the total medal haul was slightly less than realistically expected (albeit not much, hence the 8), but there were a whole lot of really good performances including those just outside the medals - think triathlon, for example.

  25. Exactly, another reason why I am proud of Greece because we did everything on our own. The only athlete we had in Tokyo who did not live most of their life in Greece was Stamatia Scarvelis in the women's hammer throw, who is from USA but both of her parents are Greeks. Everyone else was born and lived their whole lives in Greece or came to Greece at very young ages.

  26. I'm happy for Turkey winning 13 medals though I expect 1-2 gold more. Azerbaijan went from 17 medals in Rio to 7 in Tokyo. Just shows naturalizing athletes are not sustainable. They can't medal everytime. When they fail to medal or get injured you realise there isn't a talent pool from your country which can replace them, so you just use the same athletes. I prefer pure original athletes from a nation at least born there or staying there from a very very young age

  29. Well, I definitely plan to attend as of now. Will be fishing for some dressage/eventing tickets at Versailles, and then possibly something in between. I will not be stacking my schedule though. Max 2 events per day, but preferrably 1.

So for now enjoy the Day 1 Tomorrow I will add here the Day 2 etc... Links for the Days are as usual in the thread´s OP

First ever team bronze. The women 8 with the upset and the men’s four not getting a medal as they nearly veered off course. 35. No, unfortunately that is not possible. It would lead to also ignoring posts from users you don't ignore.
    1 point
  36. On that note, is there a way to make the Ignore function work in such a way that you also don't see an ignored users' posts when someone quotes them? I don't think so, since the quote is simply a part of the non-ignored users' post, but who knows It does work well though (if you combine it with manually skipping over any quoted posts by an ignored user), took me about a week to realize why there was a certain meme going around in the forum

  37. 1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 I'd say 7, we got our best medal tally ever despite the fact that we didn't participate in Weightlifting where we could easily won 2 medals in, so yeah it was satisfying overall 2. What were the suprises and heartbreaks ? The biggest surprise for me is Hedaya Malak in Taekwondo , I didn't expect anything from Her, she hasn't done anything big since her bronze in Rio , Ferial's gold in Karate was kind of surprise for me I expected her to win a medal but not gold, Omar Assar qualifying to quarters in TT was a great surprise, this guy has very big qualities but didn't show it with NT since a very while ago, especially defeating Falck was a great moment, El Gendy going from 13 to Silver in MP after laser run was a very big pleasant surprise, he was absolutely flying whether in Shooting or Running, I know he's the best in this sport right now, but he proved that he can shine very early despite the very bad start in fencing with 2-7 record or even in Riding where he got all the 1st barrier, I though I'm watching another heartbreak MP riding after Aya Medany in Beijing, but he kept his nerves and made 284 At the end out of 300 , Mohamed El Sayed from nowhere reaching Men's epee quarters and losing only 15-13 to the bronze medalist was something really really surprising for me, our fencers overall made great performance here, t was only about very small details that kept us away from a deserved medal and I can't really forget the great comeback of Mohamed Hamza against the legendary Cassara in men's foil from 13-7 down to winning the match 15-13 , it was absolutely amazing, dominating games against Germany and Sweden in handball was also surprising , Mohamed Metwally reaching Semis in Greco-Roman -87 from nowhere was another surprise Heartbreaks : Many ? I'd say the loss against Spain in men's handball BMM was the biggest, I cried much after this loss, I mean why we always can lose in this way in handball when we are really close from winning something big, why u miss twice when u can lead with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes, this sport has always brought joy and cries to me, the 2nd one was Mohamed Ibrahim loss against Ukrainian wrestler in men's greco Roman -67 in the vary last 8 seconds after leading 6-0 and Ukrainian sitting on the mat, I can't really describe how gutted am I with this match, The failure of Mhelba's brothers in Shotgun, Abdelrahman Wael loss in Taekwondo -68 in the last 2 seconds with a punch from a very average Bosnian player was really heartbreaking 3.Was your country's goal achieved? I guess so, they expected to win 5 medals and got 6 4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future? Current / Upcoming sports Nothing known in Egypt and nothing logical as well, but I guess Wrestling and Taekwondo are the best sports where we can invest in among weightlifting which both future of the Sport and Egyptian lifters As well are very unknown

  38. Okay, let's check how many I got right. "Safe" medals Artistic gymnastics: 1 medal --> 2 medals (1 more than what I predicted) Athletics: 1 medal --> 2 medals (1 more) Boxing: 1 medal --> 3 medals (2 more) Judo: 1 medal --> 2 medals (1 more) Sailing: 1 medal --> 1 medal Skateboarding: 3 medals --> 3 medals Sprint canoeing: 2 medals --> 1 medal Surfing: 2 medals --> 1 medal Volleyball and Beach volleyball: 2 medals --> 1 medal Likely, but definitely not easy: Football: 1 medal --> 1 medal Taekwondo: 1 medal --> No medals Swimming and Open water swimming: 2 medals --> 3 medals (1 more) Unlikely, but feasible medals Cycling: 1 medal --> No medals Fencing: 1 medal --> No medals Slalom canoeing: 1 medal --> No medals Tennis: 1 medal --> 1 medal Nearly impossible medals Archery: 1 medal --> No medals Table tennis: 1 medal --> No medals Wrestling: 1 medal --> No medals All in all, I'm happy with my predictions. The medals which I thought were nearly impossible were, indeed, impossible. Among the unlikely medals, we got 1 out of 4. Among the likely medals, we got 4 out of 4, but only because we got one more medal than I expected in swimming, while in taekwondo our best finish was 5th. Still close. Among the safe medals, I got every sport correctly, and actually two more medals than I had originally predicted. Major surprises for me: artistic gymnastics, boxing, tennis and swimming Major disappointments: fencing, cycling, volleyball/beach volleyball and taekwondo

  39. So I made in my prediction a range from pessimistic to optimistic. Turns out I wasn't optimistic enough after all! Update of my prediction from earlier this year: Archery: 0-1 -> 1 Athletics: 0-3 -> 8 Cycling road: 2-3 -> 4 Cycling track: 3-5 -> 6 BMX: 1-2 -> 2 Mountainbike: 1 -> 0 Field hockey: 1-2 -> 1 Artistic gymnastics: 0 -> 0 Handball: 0 -> 0 Judo: 1-2 -> 1 Rowing: 3-5 -> 5 Sailing: 3-4 -> 3 Swimming: 0-3 -> 3 Suprise medal: 1-3 -> 2 Total: 16-34 -> 36 Only one medal below the pessimistic range, because I foolishly put Van der Poel as a guaranteed medal and not Bol or Hassan. From the optimistic ranges only men's hockey team, a judo medal and one more sailing medal (De Geus in RS:X women) missed out. The surprise medals happened mostly within the already mentioned sports, but the two missing from the list were Fontijn (boxing) and Van der Vleuten (horse jumping). The 8 athletics medals are the huge outlier that I did not predict and in road and track cycling I had not considered medals for Dumoulin and Braspenninx.

  42. Thank you Tokyo for hosting these Games despite the difficult circumstances Can't wait for 2024, it will be the first time in so long that the events will all happen at a reasonable hour for me, finally! I hope I can go see some events, having the Olympics in France will probably be a once in a lifetime opportunity. No idea which events to prioritize though (NOT breakdance).

  43. The limits were there before anyway so no country could field athletes in all weight classes. Imagine if IOC told Japan they can't field an athlete in every judo category? As usual, double standards is king
    1 point
  44. Oh, no... I hope that they will change the system. This system is really unfair, especially for European teams. It would be good if they held a qualifying tournament with the participation of only European teams. How do they understand which are the 3 best teams from Europe in this tournament, if they did not play among themselves? Well, this system worked when Sweden, England and the Netherlands defeated Germany, Norway and Italy, respectively. But when the USA defeated France and reached the semifinals, it does not mean that France could not have defeated England. It would be better if France and England played a match after the tournament, where they would reveal who will play at the Olympics.I hope they will take measures regarding the qualification of European teams

  46. Hahaha. Indeed I almost forgot. If we have to find someone to blame, it will not be him or FIG. We know how FIG works, you can't have it all after receiving 4 golds from them. Look at Russia what happened to them after receiving 2 team golds. If we have to find someone to blame, no.1 should be Women's Volleyball, total unexpected boomed out. No.2 should be table tennis mixed double. You can only blame those sports fate on your own not by referees.
