  1. Perfect example of how the world rankings don’t reward athletic performance, but rather circumstance.
  2. BBC dropped their annual trailer for the Olympics today.
  3. The problem with that is they don’t qualify as winter sports according to the definition set in the Olympic Charter. Neither require snow or ice exclusively for the sport/discipline to take place. I agree they’d help universality, but the Winter Olympics are also about giving sports that require seasonal conditions an equal opportunity to feature as an Olympic sport.
  4. Plus, the “not high enough level” argument is a moot point considering they gave Cape Verde the Rhythmic Gymnastics quota.
  5. Here’s a fresh idea; the 2021 X Games will be hosted in some athletes backyard training facilities in Southern California. Some of the Olympic disciplines will be held at a new elite training facility in Southern California as well. 6. Ice Climbing’s problem would likely be the number of competitive nations, which would likely increase with Olympic inclusion. I don’t see the sport be added anytime soon, but maybe 2030 depending on the host. I also think Ice Cross Downhill would be a fun inclusion, but it runs into similar problems. It could be a good candidate for inclusion if Canada or United States host in 2030. I’d also put forth Ski Mountaineering and Ski Orienteering for eventual inclusion.
  7. West Coast (US) heat wave is no joke. The US Track and Field Trials were postponed until the evening because of the heat. NBC showed a measure that had the track surface at 64 Celsius (148 Fahrenheit) Here’s a clip of that measure (might be geoblocked)
  8. Absolutely, correct. It would make more sense to design a standard which 50%-75% of athletes per event will qualify from, and then use the “top lists” and universality spots to fill the remaining quotas.
  9. Insane moment from this week’s World Cup stop.
  10. If an offside is called when the player wasn’t offside, VAR could allow a goal that came about as of that play. If the flag is raised before the goal is scored, VAR can’t retroactively award that team a goal. That said, the minute that player stopped their forward momentum, that flag should have gone up as it was clear nothing was forming as the result of that play.
  11. swimmers have met the same fate as the swimmers. ITG reports that Bermuda rejected both quotas.
  12. You deem those acceptable and the others not.
  13. So equal rights aren’t a political position then, thus acts that call for equality are apolitical? Faroe Islands, Macau, South Ossetia, Sahrawi Republic, Bougainville… Unless you want to compete as an athlete in a gendered event, or earn a Continental quota place, or be awarded tripartite invitation, or be a member of the Refugee Team… Who gets to decide what messages are okay? Is regulating speech and/or actions apolitical?
  14. If the Olympic Games were apolitical athletes wouldn’t not represent political entities, hear the song of a political entity upon winning an event, or parade under the flag of a political entity. Athletes would not be allowed to trade pins representing political entities, wear a uniform that displays the colors/flag/symbols of a political entity, or speak in any manner about a political entity. The International Olympic Committee would not hold elections for positions, and would instead run like a private business. Governing bodies representing political entities would no longer be allowed to be member federations of international federations. The International Olympic Committee wouldn’t sing a host agreement with a local, regional, or national political body, and would instead sign agreements with private companies, individual venues, and individual vendors. The Olympic Games would not be opened by the head of a political entity, but rather by the head of the IOC or LOC.
  15. The Tokyo 2020 Video Game finally launched worldwide a few days ago. The first ever official Paralympic game launched last night. I haven’t had the chance to try it, but the previews sounded promising. I believe both have multiplayer, so if other users plan to get/already have one game or the other it might be fun to play together.
  16. One of the “highlights”
  17. Audible booing during the Hungarian anthem
  18. Kinda like the Hungarian fans who held up anti-LGBT+ signs during their first match of the tournament…
  19. Road To Tokyo 2020 Team Announcement It’s official! The United States Virgin Islands has announced it’s team for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games! The US Virgin Islands plans to send 4 athletes to Tokyo for the Olympic Games. The athletes will represent the USVI in the sports of Archery, Athletics, and Aquatics. Archery Nicholas D’Amour - Currently the 9th ranked archer in the world rankings, D’Amour will make his debut in Tokyo after being awarded a universality quota. He will be the first ever archer to represent the US Virgin Islands at the Olympic Games. Athletics Eddie Lovett - What’s better than participating in one Olympics, participating in two. Lovett returns to Olympics once more as a representative of the US Virgin Islands. He will compete in the men’s 110m hurdles after receiving a universality quota. Aquatics - Swimming Natalia Kuipers - She holds the national record in the 400m freestyle, and will make her debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. She qualified for the Olympics via a universality quota. Adriel Sanes - Another athlete making his debut at the Olympic Games, he too has shown his prowess in the pool. He has already achieved the OST in the men’s 200m breaststroke and will awarded an invitation or universality quota. Team photo courtesy of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee.
  20. It looks like is the only country who qualified a diver for the semifinals, but did not get allocated any quota. Essentially every other country at least got one diver in, but Norway missed out completely.
