I think, they implied UWW wrestlers.

Is there a database somewhere with the number of registered members by federation in you country ?

UWW these days covers most of traditional wrestling events.

unfortunately no, I even searcehd a bit but found nothing, not even a hint about that number, so this is just a guess.

well you know things are not that "organized" here comparing to France or other European countries. we just know there are a lot of wrestlers ! specially in northern provinces and in Southwest (only Greco-Roman)

Holy shit we got a medal in Men's Weightlifting ahead of Iran, this must be the first time in history. This guy will probably be treated like joke now in Iran since this and wrestling are like religion to Iran right @MHSN?

well actually no :d , we even had 30th place finish or even worse in WCh in this sport before. outside of our top 15-20 weightlifters we don't have too much depth in this sport. (Behrouzi who finished 4th today is a former NT member)

wrestling is a different story though.

Don't lie to the guy now, that would be Aleksandr Karelin

well yeah probably but I stil would pick Lopez. he lost few gold medals intentionally otherwise his career would be as good as Karelin and you have to give more credit to Lopez, he won world title under 3 different set of rules.

    Wow @ Chile

Sadly, athletes from such nations that lose in semis usually fail to win the bronze eventually. I hope I'm wrong.

yep, Kuchmii is good , that will be 50/50 and most probably refs will decide the winner by their cautions . that's how Nabi (the luckiest man in the earth) beat both of them, by doing nothing !

Yesterday, on french TV, it was said there is one million wrestlers in Iran. @MHSN and others, is there any truth in that number ?

well there are a LOT of wrestlers in Iran but I don't think that number is true. but even if that's somehow true, that doesn't mean in freestyle/Greco-Roman there are so many different styles of traditional wrestling in Iran in each province.

That chilean is cuban? He has cuban sounding name.

indeed he is. Cuba had the greatest wrestler ever in this weight (Mijain Lopez) now he is retired (or probably took a break for this year) even their reserve guy was great and almost beat Kayalp here. poor guys were wasting their talents behind that giant.

Russian GR team is joke lol. What a debacle

They are still the better team overall and won the team title . interesting that both team winner and runner-up (Iran) didn't win any gold medal.

the thing is in Greco if you make a mistake there are only few chances to score, that's why we have so many surprising results.

  8. so 3 bronze medals at the end of the day. actually that was a good result. with a bit more luck and better officiating we could have won 2 gold medals today. but I'm glad our Greco-Roman is still alive. we have 6 debutantes this year.most of our top wrestlers retied after the Olympics and I wasn't sure we even can win a single bronze here.

our tomorrow draw is much better but the problem is our wrestlers are much weaker tomorrow ! I don't expect a medal except for Ghaderian at 80kg maybe.

interesting point, no medal for Azerbaijan , from what I heard they are in deep financial trouble. looks like they can't even pay their coaches !

So Stäbler won in a weak category? Isnt he good enough to compete in -66 kg?

Don't worry about that, UWW wll change the weight classes completely after this tournament. in one of their proposals, 70kg will be an Olympic weight,  i can't remember the other proposal right now.

and wrestling is not like Rowing or Canoeing when non-Olympic events have less importance, the importance is 100% the same as Olympic weights, except the year before the Olympics which is an Olympic qualifier.

and 71kg was a strong competition, that was a well deserved world title for Stabler. so many 66kg wrestlres moved up weight after the Olympics, btoh Rio bronze medalists among them Chunayev and Bolkvadze.

  10. and at the end we will have 3 wrestlers in bronze medal matches, while Salehizadeh narrowly missed that by losing 4-4 in a match he was much better but lost to his own blind attacks.

I'm sick of speaking of the officiating in UWW competitions. they are still corrupt , they just changed their directions, instead of supporting countries like Azerbaijan now they are gifting medals to someone else.

and rules suck big time, I advise everybody to watch all matches of Viktor Nemes of Serbia, in 4 matches this guy scored only and only 1 technical point which was a pushout. so he will win a world medal without any wrestling technique ! anything at all. and I'm not even talking about the dubious officiating, just the rules.

we lost 5 matches this session, Geraei lost 6-3 to Stabler, fair and square, there were some bad calls in 98kg Iran-Georgia match but after all Salehi lost to his own mistakes 4-4 but in other 3 defeats. we lost without giving up even 1 technical point. Salehi lost 3-1 to Aleksanyan, Aleksanyan did nothing but well I can accept that he is great and the Olympic Champion. but if Salehi was from Russia (and not Iran) they could make him the winner in a tie match like that. at 75. Abdevali scored the only technical point against Nemes but of course refs gave 2 caution points to Nemes . Nemes is very tough and it's really hard to score against him. but the worst match of the day was 85kg semifinal. nobody expected Nouri to go that far. he lost 4-1 while Kudla did absolutely nothing. UWW already gifted a free Olympic medal to Kudla to Rio, (Lorincz got robbed badly against him) looks like they love this guy. if you watch the match the center referee asked caution points for Kudla like 10 times ! maybe even more, I never saw such a thing in my life. other refs rejected him several times but eventually they let him do "his job". Nouri scored the only real point of the match .

while I wrote more about the refs, I believe the biggest problem is the rules, winning matches based on only cautions is stupid and that should not exist in this sport. they are ruining Greco-Roman. I hope they change the rules and put par-terre back to the sport.

What awful job by UWW yet again.:wall: Where are the draws? Are the Worlds starting tomorrow, or on tuesday? Very limited information as always...

As for our team here, we are once again having many injured wrestlers that won't compete. Olympic medalist Elitsa Yankova, World Champion and multiple other medalist Ivo Angelov, European silver medalist from may Borislav Novachkov won't compete. We also won't have any participants in the 2 heaviest freestyle categories, because of injuries..:( I hope for 2-3 medals, but i mainly want a final.

They had problems in their software because this is the first time they are using their "seeding system" lol this time they put the 2nd seed in the last spot instead of top of the bottom half.

btw where is Tarek Abdesalam ? didn't make weight or something else ?

As for the Iranian wrestlers, we will have 3 debutantes tomorrow plus Olympic bronze medalists Abdevali, I won't surprise if we finish the day empty handed but I believe all 4 of them have chance for a medal but Geraei and Salehizadeh were really unlucky with the draw, Salehi wll have to wrestle the baby giant Aleksanyan in very first round, even if he wins, there are still so many good wrestlers in his part of the draw. but Salehi himself is a tough guy, I believe he has a chance.

if I had to predict gold medalists, I would go with Chunayev (71), Kim (75), Chakvetadze (85) and Aleksanyan (98) but of course I hope for different results :d

Before the start of the World Championships, the Bureau of UWW will vote on a few changes. The first one is will the Par Terre remain in Greco-Roman. UWW Vice-President Tseno Tsenov acknowledged that for now the perception is that the Par Terre will remain, but the wrestlers will no longer get a point if there is no right technique done. Plus if the match finishes 0:0, both wrestlers would be disqualified, which Tsenov says will push wrestlers to be more active and aggressive in the matches. Also, there is going to be a vote on, whether the competitions will switch to a two-day format for a categorie, instead of the one-day, we are having now. This format was tested in the Junior European Championships last month and the results were very good added Tsenov.

We knew about that for a while even though what I heard is slightly different about the Greco rules.

there wlil be few more changes, about the time of the weight-in and most importantly they will decide the new weight classes. probably 10 weight classes for each style (6 Olympics and 4 non-olympic)

another important decision is about the world ranking, some countries want that to be the Olympic qualifier. that won't be a good news for non-wrestling nations.specially because they want to give ranking points to the nations not the wrestlers, which means countries can send different wrestlers to the competitions to collect points. obviously this favors the wrestling nations

I wonder how they want to determine the best team of Asia as an example. imagine all Asian teams got eliminated in 1st round. if they go with points ratio that would be quite unfair. because they won't face the same level of opponents ! China as host will be seeded and will get easier opponents.

Another option is having a mini tournament for the eliminated teams but that most probably won't happen.

well FIBA published the whole competition system for the World Cup, not sure if this is new but I just found it today.

    http://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2019/competition-system/full.pdf

A bit weird, we will have some kind of classification games ! after the 1st round, top 16 teams will continue in groups of 4 teams but each team only play 2 games since results from the 1st round will be counted here as well.

the same goes for bottom 16 teams but the difference is there is no more match for them after the 2nd round and they will be ranked based on all those 5 games results (3 in 1st round, 2 in second round, total 5 games for each team)

since this is expected to see all Asian and African teams eliminated in 1st round, this is important for them to lose with the lowest margin possible. this is a bit stupid to qualify for the Olympics by losing ''good" instead of winning games ! after all not a fair format at all.

  15. USA and Russia completely dominated the world juniors in freestyle and won 7 out of 8 gold medals ! most (if not all) of our wrestlers lost to Russia and USA and we ended up with 1 silver and 3 bronze and 3rd place overall. a very disappointing result but have to admit that was just fair, USA had a fantastic team this year and they really deserved the team title. we were 0-5 against USA this team, terrible terrible and against Russia we had just one win at the repechage, most of our wrestlers got dominated against Russian or American wrestlers !

I don't know it was just one year or these countries are getting stronger but USA and Russia were way stronger than the rest this year. they mostly teched their opponents. for Russia that's not surprising but I never saw American wrestlers dominating like this.

  16. that was like a silver medal festival for Iran with 2 gold, 8 silver and 1 bronze ! that was great winning 11 medals while we had only 13 athletes in official sports !! only 2 of them failed to win medal. still that was a bit disappointing losing back to back finals. some of these sports (Karate, Sport Climbing, Jujitsu and Compound Archery) will be in the 2018 Asian Games next year, that was important to see where we stand in those non-Olympic sports.

I enjoyed watching few sports at the World Games , nice competition and thanks Poland for being always a great host :yes

  17. Asian Champs quarterfinal

    South Korea vs China

    Chinese Taipei vs Kazakhstan

    Iran vs Indonesia

    Japan vs Australia

before the tournament I was sure that Korea, China, Japan and Australia will make it to the semifinal but now two of them will be eliminated tomorrow ! TPE surprised everybody by beating both China and Australia, but that was also very surprising that Iran U23 beat Australian A team today ! :yikes:

If Iran make it to the semifinal that would be a GREAT result for this team, they will be favorite against the host team Indonesia.

Indonesia beat Qatar and qualifies for the final 8 of Asian Championship :yikes:

not a big surprise, Indonesia had been in Asia top 8 before and they are the host this time.even though I was expecting them to eliminate Kazakhstan not Qatar.

I'm very surprised by Iran's results so far winning 3 matches in straight sets. because thanks to our stupid federation this is not our A team but U23 team.! it will be great if they can make it to the semifinal which is still unlikely.

  19. despite being 5 out of 5 in the finals, Iranians managed to win only 1 gold medal ! Poursheib (who had the least chance for gold) finally beat his archrival Araga ! the others mostly lost their lead near the end of the match and of course as usual there were some dubious calls. specially when you are up against Japan

so far 2 gold and 4 silver from 6 athletes, few more left in Muaythai, Jujitsu, Snooker and Archery.

  20. All of our 4 Karatekas today advanced to the final ! (3 of them against Japan !) which means out of 6 athletes we had in World Games so far all 6 of them finished or will finish on the podium. most importantly they all win medals in future Olympic sports, Sport Climbing and Karate.

we had Asian Champs in Karate only few days ago and our athletes were supposed to be tired here while Japan rested all World Games participants in Asian Champs. it's funny that 3 of these guys Poursheib, Asiabari and Abbasasli didn't even make the Asian team ! (they were still there for the team kumitee event) for whatever reason our Karatekas usually perform better outside of Asia.

even though I still have my own view about Karate :d but there are only few sports that Iran can win medals in world class tournaments and Karate is one of them. having 5 finalists out of 5 athletes is a very good result (Mehdizadeh won silver yesterday)

It doesn't looks worst than Takwendo. Probably less silly too.

    I'll give you Kata though.

I'm not a big fan of Taekwondo (following it only because it gives us medals , same as Karate) but at least in Taekwondo it's clear that you have to kick your opponent and kick hard. but despite following Karate for year, I still had hard time to understand the rules and why this technique should be scored and that one should not ! (and changing rules consistently doesn't help at all)

there are few serious problems with Karate

first the officiating, then the time of the fight, fights should be longer, seriously only 2 minutes for women ?! and no extra time, at least this new rule (who scores the first point wins the match in case of tie) is better than Hantei. it looks like they just want to finish the whole thing as soon as possible, I don't see any problem with 1 minute of extra time !
