Because it was run like a meeting race with pacemaking. Muir can always contend in such races, she can't win a slow race with sprint finish because she doesn't have it.

Say what you will about skateboarding, they don't randomly give some of the 12 year old girls a skateboard that just doesn't work.

They should have skateboarding as one of the 5 sports instead of this, being serious too

The naming of the rounds only make sense in the sense that 1/32th final means you still have a 1/16th, 1/8th and so on finals.
1/32th final: 12 heats, winners move on. 4 repechage winners also move on.
1/16th final: 8 heats, winners move on. 4 repechage winners also move on.
1/8th final: 6 heats, winners move on. 2 repechage winners also move on.
1/4th final onward: best of three, no repechage.

NearPup reacted to Makedonas in Men's Water Polo Tournament at the Summer Olympic Games 2020
I am so proud of this team. Thank you to all of the kind Hungarians on here who are congratulating us and wishing us luck for the final. We appreciate it and we hope that Hungary doesn't get 4th place in both men's and women's. I will cheer for your teams.
This means so much for us honestly. Water polo really isn't a big sport in Greece to be honest, just in a few coastal towns outside Athens and a couple of islands the sport is popular, and in the rest of the country no one really plays it. But this is a big result for us and people are getting excited about water polo throughout the country (it also helps that this is the only event for Greece left in the Olympics after the women's race walk which will end within the next two hours). In our 16th Olympic appearance in men's water polo we finally got a medal. Those of us who follow our national team have been waiting many years for this and we have been disappointed many times but eventually we finally did it.
I know this might be a surprise for some people (and to be honest even we are surprised because we expected to be disappointed again), but our team really deserves it. People might not be used to seeing our team win medals and do well (though we had a few good runs in 2004-2005 and 2015-2017), but on paper we should be achieving such results. We have many good, talented players and it never made sense how our national team just couldn't achieve these big results with the players we have. Especially since our club teams typically do very well and also our national team players who play for other European clubs outside Greece.
Now we get the chance to go for gold! It will be very difficult but we definitely have a shot. No Greek team in any team sport has ever won gold at the Olympics, so this will be really special.

Is this a bigger crowd than in Rio? xD
Either way, I find this little downtown Sapporo race walking course fairly aesthetically pleasing.

There should be a lot more anger towards WA than towards IOC in this case, absolutely. Or in general, because WA isn't doing much good anyway.

The other thing is that race walking is just, well, niche. It's not like long distance running, which is a mass participation sport that has a very well developed pro circuit. Race walking having three events is already somewhat generous given the number of people who practice the sport, whether competitively or recreationally.

NearPup reacted to Grassmarket in Athletics at the Summer Olympic Games 2020
The history of athletics was that race walking actually preceded running as an organised sport. But as everyone says, the failure to produce a set of rules that can be regularly applied is killing the sport in an era of HDTV.

Wow just saw the press conference with Evan Dunfee and he did not hold back on calling out the IOC on dropping the 50km walk, with the other two medalists clapping at the end lol
"No one can tell me this is not exciting" For the IOC to come out and say they are looking for more youthful events its "bulls*it". Its absolute bollocks the excuse the IOC is giving in removing the event. They don't like it because its a free event and they can't make money off it.
