  1. 40 NOCs in the medal table already, which is 9 more than in Rio at this stage. The expected top-three countries are running away early. , and collecting more medals than five years ago at this early stage (USA 3-5-4, China 3-2-3 and USA 1-0-6). Especially impressive the Americans considering there were no medals won yesterday. Australia not yet able to get close to their superb start of 3-0-3 and also Italy having dropped slightly compared to Rio (2-3-2). Sweden with no medal yet when they had one gold and a silver in comparison. Very impressed by Tunisia and there are more chances left along the way. The Dutch team not looking like they will finish 5th in the medal table and 48 medals total. Have already blown some chances for that. Not to mention being unlucky with Covid in rowing. 4th place counter* (3) - (2) - (1) - and the Refugee Olympic Team *5th places in events that award two bronze medals

  7. This is random and brilliant. Back when I was collecting info for team sizes/selections, I read from the Austrian NOC page that Anna Kiesenhofer got selected after winning Olympic trials at some mountainous course. I was like: "Austria has Olympic trials for the women's road race? Good on them!"

  15. There is a lot of nonsense being spoken about how GB is doing so far. How many likely medals have we actually missed? Jade Jones has been mentioned but she was up against an opponent who she has had problems against in the past and who won a bronze medal in Rio when competing for Iran. Basically she hasn't able to compete in international competition for three years while her refugee status is being sorted out or she would almost certainly have been seeded here. Jones's defeat was a disappointment but can't be considered a shattering shock given the quality of her opponent. Peter McGrail has also been mentioned. Again he was unlucky to draw another tough opponent. It was his loss in the resumed qualifying tournament that cost him as he would almost certainly have been one of the four seeded boxers otherwise. He was an example of an athlete who was hurt by the delayed Olympics. Others like judo's Chelsie Giles benefited from it. In terms of sports it was obvious that rowing was going to be weaker following retirements after 2016. 33 out of 41 rowing squad members are making their olympic debuts. I still believe 2-3 medals are possible starting with the men's four. The eight haven't suddenly become bad rowers overnight and will I think turn it round. The women's lightweight double sculls and maybe the pair and men's quad may also still challenge for medals. In taekwondo we only had five competitors to begin with and despite Jones's loss we could still match the three medals we won last time with Walkden still to come and both Williams and Cho capable of medalling on their day. In swimming some are suggesting that we are not doing as well as we did at the Europeans which is not surprising given that this is a global event. We have plenty of medal chances to come from Peaty, Scott (×2), Dean, Proud, Renshaw, Dawson and maybe Wood, Guy, Wilby and Greenbank. Add the men's 4x200 free, 4x100 medley and mixed medley and we still have strong reasons to believe that we can surpass the six medals we won in Rio. Overall we are going to do worse than we did in London and Rio but the period after hosting a games is always difficult as top athletes retire or in some cases go on too long. Rowing, gymnastics and cycling are all going to do less well, partly for this reason but also because other countries have seen what we have done and upped their games. Added to which many of the coaches who contributed to that success have now gone on to work for other countries. There will be some compensation from swimming and maybe boxing but all in all I'm expecting a medal haul of around 50 which I think will be surpassed only by the USA, China, Russia and Japan with their vastly greater resources. Instead of hand wringing after just two days of competition wait until we see how the Games pan out as a whole before casting judgement. There have already been plenty of shocks as some of us were predicting after the disruptions of the past two years and there will be more to come.

  21. Van der Breggen said they (everyone in the group, basically) thought they had taken back everyone from the lead group once Plichta and Shapira were caught, they miscounted. They also saw 1:35 on some screen or sign or something, and they thought it was the distance to the lead, which would have been no problem, but it was the gap between Kiesenhofer and the early chase.

  38. I don't know, maybe it's just tradition, it feels like we must win at least one gold at every SOG, otherwise we fail to live up to our legends in the sport. It's like water polo. There aren't many nations who view sports like fencing and water polo as their most valued disciplines that they must keep alive no matter what. Fencing can never be as high on the German "Olympic priority list" as on the Hungarian one, Germany obviously has many other sports that they value more.

    Olympic Games 2020 League

DAY 1 REPORT Welcome to the first daily report of the 2020 Olympics League! The first competition day went pretty well with lots of ups and downs and random out-of-nowhere rises to the top of the standings. A total of 43 NOCs earned at least a point today with Kosovo as the "winner" of Day 1 and current total standing leader. The Fight for the Top The league competition day started with a Chinese shooter Quin Yang's victory and Switzerland's rise to 1st place in the standings post-multipliers. Then Iran took the lead after it's shooter Javad Foroughi won his discipline and the NOC held on to the lead until Ecuador's Richard Carapaz won the men's cycling road race and let his country's Olympic team go up to 1st place. But Ecuador's reign ended in around 2 hours when the Kosovian judoka Distria Krasniqi won the NOC's only second Olympic gold and gave them the lead in the standings and, despite the efforts of other NOCs to end their glory, Kosovo took the day "victory" at the end of it and carries on it's lead to Sunday. The Great 8 This segment of the daily reports will talk about the Top 8 Olympic teams of the total standings and their work throughout the day, so let's begin! 8th: Belgium Belgium today competed in 2 points giving events and did pretty well in both, earning 5th in the Weightlifting Women's -49kg Group A and in the total standings and earning a silver medal in the Men's Road Cycling Race thanks to Sterckx and van Aert respectively, earning 22 points pre- and 88 points post-multipliers, just edging out their Benelux buddies Netherlands. Other than that, not really that much to say, except "Good luck!" 7th: China China have been above and beyond the best team yesterday (or today, belongs where you live) with 3 golds and 1 bronze to their tally and a couple of top 8 appearances in other disciplines too. Pre and post-multipliers their points tally today stays the same: 91. Unbelievable for a team with no outside help and considering the fact that some other big in both team size and population countries struggled badly to even earn points today. 6th: Italy Italy had a pretty poor start to the day, not earning a single point, but they had some in the pipeline and they helped. A ton. Italy is currently sitting in the medal tally with a gold and a silver, add in some nice points finishes and it is currently running with 49 points before and 98 after the multipliers. Italy friendly ripped it's Eurovision "Big Five" buddies into pieces today, but it's only the beggining and the other four can always backfire, so Italy must continue the decent results. 5th: Ecuador Richard Carapaz. 4th: Hungary Same with Italy, they've had a poor start with points in the pipeline and the team ended the day with a gold from Aron Szilagyi in Men's Fencing Individual Sabre and a 5th from Omar Salim in Taekwondo Men's -58kg to their name, totalling up to 29 points and 116 post-multipliers. An excellent way to start before the aquatics kick in to this league. 3rd: Serbia Serbia is currently the only team in the top 5 of the standings to not have a gold medal yet, instead benefiting from a silver from Mikec in Men's Shooting 10m Air Pistol and a bronze in Taekwondo Women's -49kg from Bogdanovic, adding up to 30 points and a whopping 120 after the multiplier treatment, only a 7th place away from taking the lead from what I think are their biggest enemies. Again, nothing else to say, let's move on to 2nd: South Korea Unbelievable push by them, 1 gold in the Archery Mixed Team and 2 bronzes and a massive 61 point tally today and 122 after multipliers are applied. South Korea managed to take advantage of the disciplines with a gold medal game today as they were pretty favouring to them and China and that's why they are 1-2 in the pre-multiplier points tally. They will probably fall in the standings later in the 'lympics but the sign of that happening isn't there. 1st: Kosovo Distria Krasniqi. Yes, I reused the same joke as before. Cry about it. /s And that concludes the Great 8 segment, now time for the announcement moment. I am converting the standings to Google Sheets to make them more convenient for me and more detailed for you. I will still post the top 10 of both the day and the total standings with the country/state flags together with some fun trivia too, but the rest only stay in the Sheets. Hopefully you like this idea and this report and if you don't, you can give your critizisms or/and recommendations to improve the delivery of this whole thing on this thread.
