In athletics, Andrea Pereira was the best South American at the 100 km Ultramarathon World Championship held in Berlin, and got the national women's record with 8:34'13. At the Women's Youth Handball World Championship, Uruguay lost by relatively narrow margins to Norway Brazil and Czech Republic, then by 42-18 against Spain and by 29-19 against Argentina. Then they lost to India 27-25, and won over Algeria 29-26 to rank 31st.
