Well they weren’t a nation then to be fair. Since independence they’ve been very strong Cuba might end up with qualifiers in all 7 men’s weights. In the Pan Am games, each of their boxers who didn’t qualify was beaten by the gold medalist

It was the women’s 200m fly in Tokyo where 16 entered the heats, so all 16 qualified for the semi finals They had 17 entered, and one DNS Oh and one of the 16/17 was a universality place for Honduras. 13 had the standard prior to the games

The timeline is odd too. They have to accept the relay by start of June, but the qualifying period ends about 3 weeks later (when the OCT invites go out). Both Ferguson (back) and McCusker (fly) have the OCT so might get an invite and swim Ireland has said that, unlike in previous games, they would accept these invites so yes, we could accept the relay quota with Wiffen and Fannon and hope to fill the team with Ferguson and McCusker and 2 relay only. I’m sure Fannon could stretch to the 100m if needed One more (maybe Ryan in the 100m free or John Short in the 200m back) and I’d be certain!

Second OQT achieved at the Olympic trials with Tom Fannon going under the time for 50m freestyle. He had already swam the time but not at one of the designated events by Swim Ireland. Team Ireland now up to 5 individuals Daniel Wiffen (400,800,1500 free) Mona McSharry (100m breast) Ellen Walshe (200 IM) Danielle Hill (100 back) Tom Fannon (50 free) Others have the OCT time so we’ll see what happens with them

No. A relay gets you 2 “relay only” quotas but you can make up your team with any 2 qualified individuals. We’d have used McSharry and Walshe (fly) Jon Rudd didn’t know this rule last time which meant Brendan Hyland (normally a fly specialist) and Shane Ryan (sprinter) had to swim in the 4x200m free relay.

Indeed. She was likely going anyway because of the mixed relay squad, but this is big for her. Hopefully we can get a couple of the boys involved too

Some countries measure by quotas, but Italy and others measure by medal chances. It is all still to be decided, but for a country like Italy medals are the only focus (or they should be anyway!)

Relay team for womens is 5 travelling, but you must include all those qualified at that event. So its Adeleke, Mawsley + 3 There's no requirement to include qualified individual athletes for the mixed so that could be another 2 men + 2 women. So I make our athletics team 9 individuals and 7 relay athletes at the moment. Swimming might not be known for a while. Ferguson (100m back) and Ryan (100m free) may get in with ranks + OCT and we'd get that relay team in

Just to show not everyone is in crisis, this is a record team for Ireland. In 2012 we had one rower qualified, in 2024 we have 7 boats and 16 rowers
