  1. Poland and Canada in the 4x100 with Jamaica miles away! Wow congrats to both
  2. And now you’ll have at least 2!
  3. I haven’t seen any but Irish Athletics posted the team selection on social media
  4. We have not. They’ve selected our top two women for both relays tonight
  5. They can be separate. For men’s and the women they can nominate 5, but if they have individuals qualified they must be included in the five. A travelling reserve can be included (but not counted) For the mixed relay, they can only nominate 2 men and 2 women (no requirement to include qualified individuals) and there’s a travelling reserve for each gender (again, not counted as a quota) So the max quotas would be 14 (5 in men’s, 5 in women’s, 4 in mixed). In practice it would be far less as there would be crossover (and individual qualifiers would bring the number down too)
  6. 4 heats in round one - top 2 in each qualify = 8 total 3 heats in round two - top 2 in each qualify = 6 total 8+6=14
  7. It will depend on the draws. They’ll have 2 teams ranked ahead of them in both heats so will have to over perform in one. If they qualify either on day one, I’d be confident the other would qualify on day two But the point remains, they’re likely going to have to sacrifice one of them if they don’t finish in the top 2 in the opening round. We won’t be the only country like this either
  8. My country is one of those. We’re top 12 in each of mixed and women’s and may not qualify in either. We will almost certainly have to choose to forego one though
  9. I’m not sure anyone suggested any different. I just it was interesting that they changed the names. I wasn’t suggesting it was a big deal Your understanding of the repechage round is wrong though. There’s no B final. There’s 3 “heats” with those who didn’t reach the final. Top 2 in each of those qualify for the Olympics. No top 6, no timed element. Top 2 in either round one or round two goes to the Olympics
  10. When the timetable was originally released, they names the first round as heats. Now they’re listed as “Olympic qualification round one” with the second day split into “Olympic qualification round two” and “finals”
  11. Hoping for news on the draws today
  12. Sri Lanka was only entered in the men’s 4x400m and Australia were already entered in that. Portugal and Spain were already entered in the women’s and mixed respectively too. The mixed and women’s 400 were not filled (30 and 27 nations entered)
  13. Transit visas are issued by most countries allowing citizens of some countries to *only* fly in and out of the same airport onto a third country. Most western countries don’t require citizens from most western countries to obtain them but Sri Lankans need them for the US (and other places they might have to transfer through)
  14. It’s not. I worked in this area. There will be special arrangements in place for the Olympics (and the World Cup in football 2 years before hand)
  15. Grainne Walshe. She beat out Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke earlier this year for the selection
  16. Not to be facetious, but there was internal assessment and they chose Walsh. Shes pissed there wasn’t a second assessment but Broadhurst a) had a chance and lost to Eccles and b) was beaten by Walsh for the Irish spot. Walsh was similarly pissed last year when she beat Broadhurst in the Irish championships but they selected Broadhurst anyway. Amy has been quite vocal about it, but Boxing Ireland can’t really reply to some of her comments without being accused of pettiness. They’ve decided to take the high road and allow her transfer through without objection. The now replaced British 60kg fighters have claimed Broadhurst hasn’t made weight yet which adds another wrinkle.
  17. FWIW you haven't updated the summary table on wikipedia (eg it still shows Ireland with a pot in the women's singles) We should have confirmation of all the quotas soon though
  18. One of those is Amy Broadhurst. A former world champion with (at non Olympic weight). She was beaten by Rosie Eccles of GB in the European Games last year. She wasn't selected for Ireland in the first world qualifier where Grainne Walsh was narrowly defeated. When she was told she wasn't to be selected for the second world qualifier, she sought a switch of allegiance. She's dropped to the 60kg division (where Kellie Harrington qualified by winning the European games with Ireland last year) and will represent this time. her father is from England. Her rivals for the GB spot are not happy with "the foreigner" coming in
  19. Absolutely no chance. A paddler can compete in both, but there is a strict one boat per nation rule
  20. I never thought the likes of Marley or Clancy were medal contenders to be fair. Now once you’re in the Olympics, you can get an Aidan Walsh type draw and medal, but I’ve always said that most needed a good draw to have any chance. Harrington remains the only one of the current squad who has won a world championship medal at an Olympic weight, and that tells a story. There aren’t many who’ve got out of the prelims Aoife O’Rourke has been unlucky with draws in her two previous global events, but she’ll be a strong medal contender. Two from boxing would be a great return As would 4/5 overall considering we’ve only earned more than 3 four times in our history. O’Donovan & McCarthy remain the only Irish entrants where I’d be shocked if they didn’t win a medal. Everyone else is either a contender we hope improves (Wiffen, Adeleke, the rowing pairs/doubles) or in a sport where one second can change everything (boxers, McClenaghan) The great part is that unlike most years we do have about 12-15 (you can add sailing, Lara Gillespie, Ben Healy, rugby team, the equestrian teams etc) who are contenders, even if outside shots. The more of those you have, the more medals you’ll win over time
  21. I’m not sure I’d argue with Australia and US swimming given how they perform at every major championships
  22. She scraped by in the earlier round too but Serbia are doing remarkably well at their home event. That might be a factor
  23. The finalists are known. 3 spots for the singles, 2 spots for the lightweight doubles women’s single Men’s single LW womens double LW mens double Austria and Poland are the two nations with one boat qualified and multiple chances here. Ukraine would need to pick 2 if all 3 of their boats qualify in the same position (ie if 2 win, and 1 finishes 2nd, the winners qualify. If they all win, or all finish 2nd, the NOC must choose) For everyone else, finishing in a qualifying position will see them win their quota
  24. It’s the same. Poland already has a boat qualified. so the paragraph at the bottom of page applies. They can qualify one boat “except in the case where two or more place first” in the regional qualifiers
