I agree although I disagree with the urgency point. Angharad has no chance of a medal via her inclusion (either individual or the mixed relay). On the other hand, you include Peters and the mens medlay relay is a real medal contender. So to me, it is relatively more urgent in this regard to include Jacob.

Trust me I get it which is why I didn't say they were the same circumstances. But to me semantics needs to be put aside when the management is tasked with bringing home the most medals. This is precisely why discretion was so high up in the priority list for selection. They had the scope to put him in, but have left us with a fly swimmer who barely swims the event in Joe (absolutely amazing result to win the trials), and who I'm pretty sure the management do not want to be swimming in the relay. Dean's schedule isn't so bad now that he misses the 100 and 200 individuals, so wouldn't need to be rested, alongside Jimmy. It is only Scott and Richards that need help with the workload. The rest of the selections I think are sensible, not taking Amelie I do understand given her performances at trials were not close enough to the consideration times. It is good to see Eva going in the relay, and Anderson as most of us were agreed had to be selected. I am pleased for Angharad, as thought the womens medlay relay should go but to me it is one selection that is wrong. Do we really need to take BOTH Macmillan and Whittle?
-
Exactly. That’s all we have now and Guy was awful in the fly at nationals. Peters has been the number 1 in the country for a while… I must admit I really don’t understand this decision at all. They found a way to nominate Angharad in related circumstances (swimming the time in the heat but not the final) despite the female medley relay missing the time. I felt the 200 had enough cover with Joe being in the team (and Max) but there we are, they have gone super conservative for the free relays at the expense of the medley.
-
No Jacob Peters - massive hit to the medley relays. 😢 they clearly are prioritising the men’s free relays above the medley relays with macmillan and whittle both getting rather fortuitous picks in my view. I thought we had a genuine medal chance in the men’s medley relay and possibly the mixed too but GB Aquatics clearly don’t share the same optimism.

This is my presumption too. I think if Walls can’t be considered then the 5 is set. Madison id tentatively suggest it will be Tarling plus Vernon. Hayter riding the Omnium seems set. -
The women have significant opposition in Paris in all events to be honest: Team pursuit: New Zealand have the marginal edge from what we saw earlier in the year Omnium: Ally Wollaston beat Katie pretty handily at the nations cup round 1, and Lotte Kopecky will be very tough too. Ally would be my prediction for gold. team sprint: got to knock off the Germans. GB will probably start small favs Madison: assuming it’s Barker and Evans, a fair chance in an open race Sprint and Kierin: Emma will probably start as fav in both, but relatively open and competitive. In terms of the road, Tarling will have a great chance and Zoe if she is selected in the time trial side. Road race crapshoot I guess gives small chances. Mtn Biking I would imagine it’s all on Pidcock. BMX I think we will obviously have a regression towards the mean but definite medal chances in all 4 disciplines.

On the men’s side I think the endurance track team is essentially finalised with Tarling doing the crossover between track (team pursuit and possibly Madison) and the ITT. My only question with the men’s side is regarding the plan and status of Matt Walls (defending Omnium champion). We have discussed the women’s side at length on this forum and posters are split. I think all we can say is that we shall have to wait and see what the real plan is! My 2 cents remains that Zoe is too talented to be missing from the team. The track option does not look likely at this point (doing the Tarling type crossover role), so I still think she makes the Road team and competes in the TT and road race. -
GBR in the sweep events look very strong from pairs up to the 8. Women's pair might be the only boat without genuine gold medal hopes for Paris. NED dominance in the sculling events might be slightly diminished compared to last year as you point out. Europeans will be another good barometer!
-
the only squad that was a little disappointing was the women's quad, but the comms were mentioning they have had an interrupted winter with niggles and illness so best to see how they progress over next couple of regattas.
-
I must admit this is another positive takeaway from today, that quota looks likely to be gained.
-
i would say its more akin to boxing with the different weight classes, but this did make me laugh!
-
Indeed - it's the one I posted on the "who are gold medal locks" forum. They do seem in another class. On another note, it strikes me as quite a shame that lightweight classes are being removed completely for LA 2028 but thats another topic for another day.
-
lots of positive performances by GBR this morning; coming 1-2 in the women's 4 with a dominating win over NED particularly eye catching with GBR-2 going in the womens 8 final later this morning. Should be strong contenders in Paris in a number of boats.

Sometimes points races are messy and scoring can be difficult, but this wasn’t the case here! He took a lap with 3 other leading contenders, and they somehow just forgot to give him 20 points. It was obvious what had gone wrong but still took ages for them to rectify it, with mins of camera shots of about 20 UCI officials looking hugely confused. Just a bad look at such a significant event.
-
Unbelievable mess in the men’s omnium points race. Hayter wins but somehow isn’t credited with a lap leading to a 20 min delay while the officials try to figure out what happened. Shambles 🤣

I’m hopeful this will be a break out year for Amber and she will be our number 1. im not sure if DAS is considering adding the 400m relay to her schedule but it’s an intriguing prospect if she does. US will be ahead of us but I’m not totally convinced we can’t beat the Dutch despite the amazingness of Bol

- I think Proud has put himself in the category of a good chance for gold category. Cam seemed to succumb to the pressure at World’s and proved he isn’t infallible and That time Ben posted at trials puts him in a great spot to be pushing 21 flat at Paris. He seems mentally in a really good place so I’m excited to see what he can do - 4 x 200m free for mens = gold barring something unusual - 4 x 100m free = I’d say favourites for silver at the moment, can we challenge US? - 4x100m men’s medley = I think we need Jacob Peters on the team, so it’s hard to judge pre selection. But surely a medal contender with the other 3 legs. - 4 x100m mixed medley = don’t love our chances at retaining this without a fly swimmer. You need one of the 100m fly girls to push on hard in the months before Paris (Morgan Peaty mcinnes Hopkin) -men’s 100m breast = Peaty vs Qin. Hard to know who is favourite right now but my head slightly thinks Qin. Peaty takes silver most likely. - 200IM men = Scott beating Marchand is looking like a pipe dream of mine now after US NCAAs, but a medal is likely in my view. Tom Dean outside chance of a medal too. - 200IM women = outside chance for Abbie Wood as she looked great at trials with new PB. Will need to knock another second off to go 2 07 to medal most likely. - 400IM men = bronze chance for Max but will have to beat Clareburt among others. - 400IM women = I was dismissed on here in the other thread but I’m sticking to my prediction that Freya has a great chance at wins bronze behind Summer and Katie. - I don’t see our girls medalling in 200m back but could both final. - 200m fly women = very outside chance of a medal for either of the 2 girls. - men’s 200m free = 2 good medal chances but it’s very hard to predict. Gold chances. - women’s 4x200m free = I’d love to see the girls win a bronze here, but it’s going to be tough. Need Freya A back to her best. - backstroke men’s 100m = outside medal chance for Ollie -200m back men’s = bronze chances for our 2 boys. Both capable on their best of going very fast. - 100m free = I don’t rule out Matt Richards but it’ll be very tough to get on the podium

Indeed. They have invested significant money into the clean up but from what I’m reading the benefits might not be observed till next year. issues like this always surprise me that there are not contingency plans in place. Similar to the rowing course in LA not being 2km long due to a bridge that is due to be built 🤣 -

Looks like the toxicity of the Seine is really causing problems. Reported today that the triathlon swim might be moved to later in the games if the e Coli levels are unacceptable (for instance in the event of heavy rain), and even removed from the triathlon completely if levels remain unacceptable. I'm sure Potter and Yee wouldn't mind too much if this was the case -

This is a new sport to me, I had been aware of Max Milne, but Toby Roberts seems to really have progressed lately on the world stage. What are the expectations around the British squad for Paris, and specificlly for Toby? -

Looking forward to seeing Amber Anning, curious how her stellar indoor season will translate.
