Hi, Totallympics' members! Welcome to the Totallympics Awards, a celebration of the year in sports. We invite you to take part in the voting process that will elect the best in sports from 2022 in multiple categories – including the two big prizes for Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete. Which better place than Totallympics, the Home of Olympic Sports, to recognize your favorites athletes and teams?

For the returning edition of the award, we hope to count with voters from as many nations as possible. If you want to participate, please follow the instructions in the third post of this thread. You are allowed to make comments and suggestions of your personal preferences in this thread. Below, we explain the categories and voting process in details.

Categories

  • Best Male Athlete

  • Best Female Athlete

  • Best Non-Olympic Athlete

  • Best Paralympic Athlete

  • Best Youth Athlete

  • Best Men's Team

  • Best Women's Team

  • Best Doubles or Pair

  • Breakthrough of the Year

  • Sport Moment of the Year

  • Olympic Spirit Award

Special Awards

  • Totallympics' Stars Award

  • Lifetime Achievement Award

The Totallympics Awards will consist of 11 categories (each with 6 nominees) and two special awards. The top categories are Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete, in which voters will recognize the best athletes of the year in Olympic sports only (Summer or Winter). Such restriction applies only to these categories. Athletes that participate in sports outside of the Olympic Games will be up for the Non-Olympic Athlete award – a category that will combine male and female athletes, as well for all other individual categories.

The Paralympic Athlete award will acknowledge the outstanding names that highlighted the Paralympic movement in 2022. The Breakthrough of the Year is a category for the most improved athlete/team of the year, while younger athletes will be up for Best Youth Athlete, a category for the talents up to 18 years old – to be eligible, an athlete must have been born after 1 January 2004.

Although athletes of Team sports can be nominated for all the individual awards, they will also be in the running for two other categories: Best Men's Team and Best Women's Team. As the name suggests, national teams or groups (of three people or more) can be nominated in these categories, in both Olympic and Non-Olympic sports, Paralympic sports included. Sportspeople competing in 2-athlete events will be up for the Best Doubles or Pair award.

The Sport Moment of the Year award will bring the moments that thrilled sports fans in 2022, while the Olympic Spirit Award is a category for people related to the 2022 Winter Olympics or Paralympics and will be given to the individuals who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in the Games or showed great determination in overcoming obstacles. As for the special categories, the Totallympics' Stars award will celebrate the forum members, while the Lifetime Achievement will recognize retired sport personalities that have made a contribution to sports world. Both awards won't have a list of nominees, only winners.

Voting System

FIRST STAGE OF VOTING

The first stage of voting will happen from Thursday, December 22nd to Friday, December 30th. Voters will choose, in order of preference, a minimum of 3 athletes or teams and a maximum of 6 for each category in which they decide to vote – with the exception of Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete, voters can decide if they will vote in other categories or not. In this stage, voters are allowed to choose athletes/teams from their own nation, however, out of the 6 possible choices, voters are only allowed to vote for 1 athlete or team of their own nation per category.

In each category, votes (in order of preference) will be converted into points, following the system explained below:

TA.png

After the points are counted, the top 6 with most points in each category will advance for the second stage. A tiebreaker will be used when there's a tie in points for the 6th spot, prevailing the number of votes each one received, and then the number of #1 votes. If the tie persists, a random draw will be conducted to determine the final nominee. The nominees list for the Totallympics Awards will be announced Sunday, January 1st, 2023.

SECOND STAGE OF VOTING

The second stage of voting will happen from Sunday, January 1st to Friday, January 6th. Voters will rank a maximum of 3 favourite nominees in each category, but they also can make a single choice per category. As in the first stage, votes will be converted into points, but this time around a little bit differently, as seen below:

TA2.png

After the voting process is over, the nominees with most points in each category will become winners of 2022 Totallympics Awards. Like in first stage, a tiebreaker will be necessary when two or more nominees have the same number of points, prevailing the number of votes, and then the number of #1 votes. If the tie persists, results of first stage will be considered. Along with the Totallympics' Stars and the Lifetime Achievement awards, they will be announced in a live ceremony Sunday, January 8th, which will bring together Totallympics' users in a celebration of the year in sports.

Thank you for the great initiatiave @vinipereira!

I wonder how everyone is going to define breakthrough and youth athletes. Remco Evenepoel had already won races before 2022, but I feel like this year was his real breakthrough. Meanwhile Summer McIntosh still qualifies for the Youth Athlete category, but also had a breakthrough year at senior level.

Also, is Lionel Messi a 'Non-Olympic athlete', because senior level football is not Olympic on the mens side?

Suggestions are always welcome especially in "tricky" categories like Breakthrough, Youth Athlete, Sport Moment of the Year, and the Olympic Spirit award

As usual, I do not want and will not vote for athletes from my country. But this time I have to make an exception.

At the same time, Iet me please, allow myself to unusually nominate as a potential candidate for the Best Youngest Athlete of the Year an athlete from my own country.

:

There are not many young athletes in the world who have achieved what he did this year, and I dare say that there are not many even in the entire history.

February 2022

He became the top scorer of this year Olympic ice hockey tournament as the youngest player ever,

was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the Olympic tournament as the youngest player ever

and was named to the All-Stars team of the Olympic tournament ...yeah, you guessed right, as the youngest player ever.

Above all, especially and literally mainly thanks to him, Slovakia won a shocking and historic bronze medal at the Olympic Tournament.

May 2022

At the World Champs in May, he was again our best player by far, the most productive player. the leader of the team that got Slovakia to the quarter-finals and where we were very close to another sensational upset and qualification to the semifinals over the home invincible Finland.

July 2022

And in July, he completely rewrote the history of his country, region, and basically Europe, when he became only the ninth European draft as Number 1 in the NHL Draft .

Today

Today, he is the only one from this entire draft year to still playing in the NHL itself. which is itself an uncredible thing. absolutely crazy thing for a 18 year old kid.

Today Juraj Slafkovský (pic available on my avatar) is still only 18 years old, at the Olympics he was 17 and had to play with the well-known protective grid/mask on the helmet that young hockey players have to wear.

For Evenepoel, I assume this was his best year yet? So that's kinda what the category is meant for. As for best youth athlete, I would vote for talents that show the greatest potential for a successful carreer. But if things are to confunsing, maybe we could leave only the Breakthrough category and delete the Youth award.

Football should be considered Olympic, no matter what age.

    • 2028 Team Size Projection – Jan 2026 Update   Here’s an update to my 2028 Team Size Projection. While I touch upon major events changes may occur due to results in smaller events. Additionally, several sports released their qualification document so there may be cases where I have to update the projection. I will only include sports where there is an update.   Here is the link to the updated sheet.     Aquatics (Water Polo) The Men’s European Championships saw take gold. The victory moved Serbia up a few places between European nations. With that said, no one fell out of Olympic qualification with the likes of France and Romania still on the outside looking in. remains on the edge.   Athletics (Marathon) Both the Xiamen and Osaka marathons were held this month along with a few other smaller events. While there were a few changes in the rankings, in terms of Olympic projections gains an athlete in the men’s marathon at the expense of   Badminton Major tournaments include the Malaysia Open and India Open. New updates which affected projections include the women’s doubles where overtook . As Polina Buhrova is also scheduled to compete in the singles event, an additional spot has been open. Other changes in the women’s singles was loses one of their quotas. and benefit from those losses.   Indonesia’s loss on the women’s side is offset by gaining a second player in the men’s singles. This puts   on the outside.   Canoeing The qualification document for both Slalom and Sprint were released/updated. No significant changes were found in the Sprint update. Slalom had significant changes relative to 2024 where the initial quotas will be decided by rankings and kayak cross will now have significant quotas being allocated. After adjustment, the following nations lost a quota; Andorra, Chinese Taipei, Ireland, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Sweden. The following nations gained a quota; Canada, China, France, Italy, South Africa, Spain, and Tunisia.   Cricket The Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier was held. No changes to the projection.   Equestrian (Dressage & Jumping) Various World Cup events were held. No changes to the projections were made.   Fencing We had two Grand Prix this month, one for epee and the other for sabre. In men’s epee, overtakes . On the women’s side, the United States moved into the top 4 in the team ranking, pushing Estonia down to fifth. This pushed out of Olympic qualification while takes the Americas quota. This caused a downstream effect on the individual side as Ukraine takes an individual quota and Canada relinquishes their quota, additionally, gained a quota while lost one.   In men’s sabre, now takes the Asian team quota pushing down to just an individual quota. No changes were found in women’s sabre.   Handball Four men’s continental championships were held this month. finished top in Africa while a couple of upsets were saw in South America and Asia where and won over and respectively. Despite their wins, they currently haven’t leapfrogged into being projected to qualify. We’ll see how they perform at the World Championships.   Europe saw finish fourth. This was enough to push it into Olympic qualification projection. They pushed out.   Rowing The qualification document was released. There was a change in boat allocation relative to 2024 and the continental qualifier was slightly different than what I projected. Additionally, I assumed coastal rowing would allow 2 men and 2 women to compete in its three events, but the max is 1 man and 1 woman. This has caused significant changes to the projections.   Overall, the United States lost four quotas. Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, and Spain lost two quotas and Algeria, Argentina, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Portugal, Tunisia lost one quota.   The following nations have gained two athletes; Japan, Morocco while the following nations gained one athlete; Angola, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Chinese Taipei, Cote d’Ivoire, Denmark, Estonia, Kuwait, Latvia, Mexico, Romania, Philippines, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Togo, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu   Rugby Sevens Fixing a couple of mistakes. First on the men, actually has the Asian quota over and in the women as is essentially shutting down the program, I think it is only right to remove them until they decide to compete again. This means is also projected to qualify.   As for new updates, we saw the third tier SVNS compete, which brought no new updates and the Singapore SVNS. I also didn’t add the Dubai or Cape Town SVNS in my calculations. For both, while there was some shuffling no one ultimately fell out.   Shooting The Asian Shotgun Championships were held this month. A few top shooters were missing. The only change to the projection is is set to qualify in women’s trap, pushing out   Squash The Tournament of Champions was held this month. Additionally, the qualification document was released. There was some restriction as to how many nations can send two players and this sport will offer universality quotas.   The following nations lost an athlete quota; Colombia, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and New Zealand. The following nations gained an athlete quota; Canada, Pakistan, Spain (x2), Switzerland, Ukraine   Triathlon The qualification document was released. There are a few changes relative to 2024. Projection changes include: Losses to Hong Kong and Slovenia and gains for Austria and China.   Weightlifting The qualification document was released. One change to be made was the reallocation process for host nation quotas. Due to this, El Salvador Iraq, Palau, Sri Lanka, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu lost quotas while Australia, China, Dominican Republic, Iran, and Samoa (x2) gained quotas.   Wrestling The qualification document was released. There were some significant changes to the qualification process including using the world rankings and the final qualifier only consisting of non-qualified nations. The projection changes are as follows; losses to Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, and Turkey.   Belgium and Lithuania gained 2 quotas while American Samoa, Austria, Estonia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Latvia, Madagascar, Spain, and Turkmenistan gained 1 quota.
    • Looks like we in the Philippines are in the same situation. No news yet on whether we’ll be able to watch the Games
    • Cricket is any day in a better position than Baseball, Modern Pentathlon or Rowing 8s globally
    • http://i.imgur.com/gLJZbix.jpg   Honestly football is just on another level. For other sports, an expanded field or creating multiple host cities likely only works with baseball, cricket and maybe basketball, and only in very specific countries.
    • No streaming for the games in India. I contacted IOC they just sent me a list where the games will be shown live.    Last games we had the Olympic channel and YouTube showing the live coverage for regions with no media rights. This time sadly no such schedule.   So much about making the games accessible to all...
    • What revealed those files of Epstein !!!! thousands of scandals , horrible diguisting things mixing politic criminalities , robbery , scam , manipulation...etc    all those celebrities of shht that you love
    • I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field.
