Jinzha reacted to CCB in On which day will your nation win their first medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games?
When is the first realistic medal chance of the Games for your nation? When do you think your nation will get their first medal and in which event?
Day 2, when the women's cycling road race take place. But as always, nothing is sure, definitely not the road races. Still I expect the first medal here for Netherlands (with Vos, Van der Breggen, Vollering or Van Vleuten).
Is there a bumper day for your nation where you expect more than one or a few medals to come? If so, what day?
Day 5 with the women's time trial (although I expect gold for Chloe Dygert), some rowing finals (M2x, W4-) and the biggest chance on a medal at the judo tournament (women's -70, men's -90)
Is there a day when you expect to have not so much competitors from your nation competing or no chances for medals?
Not a particular day, but at the end of the competition, most of the Dutch teams will be eliminated (e.g. handball, football, waterpolo).

Another story from my days in . Every year there was a national sports meet, of which the highlight was the Slow Bicycle Race, sort of like a track stand. For many years consecutively it was won by the father of the Monarch, the elderly Seri Begawan Sultan, who somehow always managed to beat the cream of the nation’s young, fit, jungle combat-trained Army Officers. People in Brunei are very polite, everyone clapped.

Speaking as an , I have seen middle & distance athletics go through these WR growth spurts before. Apart from the doping records, it’s down to technical or organisational progress.
Late 60s/early 70s - end of the old dirt tracks, arrival of all weather tracks.
Late 70s/early 80s - professionalisation & emergence of commercial televised meets
Early 90s - Emergence of professionally managed East African athletes.
Now we have this new combination of super shoes & computerised pace-making, opening up WRs long thought unbeatable. And what has always happened before is that eventually someone sets a genuinely unbeatable record, after which everything will settle down for another decade or so.

Twee verrassende wereldbeker overwinningen vandaag met Brouwer/Meeuwsen en Maya Kingma. En dan nog die ongelofelijke 10km van Hassan!

What the hell, Netherlands went 0-1 down to France in the QF, got back to 1-1 early in the second half and then got pummeled by the French....who missed every single chance, after which Boadu scored 2-1 with barely 10 seconds of injury time left

What the hell
She has improved the Dutch record by 7 meters or so in the past week. And yes, Olympic champion Ria Stalman's 71m something doesn't count as Dutch record anymore, since she admitted doping use during her career
Suddenly might be a medal contender in Tokyo..

I think surfing and skateboarding deserve a little more respect around these parts tbh. I get that they aren't everybody's cup of tea, but those are sports that managed to build long lasting and consistently high quality International competition circuits with no real support from NOCs or the IOC. Those are sports that are doing fine without the Olympics. I'm sure the Olympics will help them grow, but I think the IOC would be crazy to not include them.
That's also how I feel about tennis and golf in the Olympics. Are the Olympics the apex of those sports? No. Is it better for the Olympics to have the PGA and the ATP/WTA as partners rather than as competitors? Absolutely.

I don't mind precision sports like archery, curling or darts, even if I don't enjoy (watching) them personally.
This might be a reach and a controversial one at that, but my reasoning is: the Olympics is also about inspiring a generation and no child should be inspired to take up shooting firearms, unless they are enrolled in a police academy or the army.
I know that stuff like archery bows and even javelins are also weapons in essence, but that's a very different story to me.
In the same argument I don't mind at all if kids are inspired to take up and strive for excellence in other 'controversial' Olympic sports like skateboarding, artistic swimming or breakdancing.

I'll have them too don't worry.

I've been arguing that the event be decided by the best times in either race.
That way Toussaint would get a bronze for her 59.02 in the first final behind Dawson 58.18 and Panziera's 59.01 in the rerun

Big disappointment for Toussaint, thats got to be rough to go from a silver to 4th

women's karate, kumite, -61kg, Alexandra Grande could upset the main favourites and take a medal...
they also have a good Skeet specialist in shotgun shooting (3rd in the last world cup, this week), but I fear he's not qualified to the Games, I should check...

Netherlands will miss their star player Estavana Polman. She had just returned from a knee injury that lasted months, in one of her first matches for her team Esbjerg tragedy struck again (yesterday). She will not compete at the Games. Sorry for her, but also a big problem for the Dutch team. They are nowhere without her. It's not without reason I have her in my profile picture: she is such an amazing player!
