  1. Interesting, I remember being in Brazil when Bolsonaro lost the elections and even driving through the city felt dangerous at some moments due to hundreds of people randomly blocking the road We were already very clear that if for whatever reason one of those people would ask us anything, we were certainly not going to say we were happy with Lula winning...
  2. Is that already confirmed? Earlier today I was saying that of course I hoped I was wrong, but to me it felt like one of those cases that will just keep dragging on for years on a technicality here or there, or he will suddenly be 'sick' or whatever. But if he's actually in jail in a couple of weeks, that'd be amazing news
  3. Oh goddamn it. https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-championships/tokyo25/timetable World Athletics used to have an excellent timetable page, easy to find (unlike European Athletics and their horrible website), with start lists and results separated (so you can still get start lists when not watching live). This just seems like another mess. Of course this... ...is going to change to a result after the event, I seriously wonder if you'll still be able to get a start list then? Edit: I think you can if you got to yet another separate page, where you then have to select the event, hold your hand over the result, and click on the start list. https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-championships/tokyo25/results/women/discus-throw/qualification/results Why make things easier if you can make them harder?
  4. Apparently in Brazil there's a form of public, one by one voting of judges in a case like that of Bolsonaro's failed coup attempt, so judges who vote later can be nicely influenced by the standings so far (unless I'm just really misunderstanding things) Anyhow, today the 5th and last judge voted 'guilty', resulting in a 3-2 guilty verdict Now the question remains exactly what will happen to him, but it's at least a good thing that unlike Trump's obvious coup attempt, Bolsonaro's failed attempt is now actually biting him in the behind.
  5. Meanwhile, for those who want a shot at a nice bit of prize money (without needing to pay anything), the traditional, long-standing and well-known Atstat contests are here again https://www.atstat.org/contest/ In contest 1, you have to predict all medal winners. In contest 2, you select the 20 biggest favourites and gain as many points as you can. Obviously enter before tomorrow night.
  6. If he is fit enough to start, one can imagine he is the favourite. The only question is if he is fit enough..
  7. Also the kind of person who was so utterly fanatic in his religious views, he said he'd let his own 10-year old daughter carry a baby to the end if she'd end up pregnant from abuse. That's horrifying shit. Obviously it doesn't justify killing anyone (before people say stuff like "oh, so it's ok to shoot him then?"), but besides doing lots of debating (which in itself is certainly a good thing), he has said plenty of awful stuff.
  8. Political murders are always bad, the Democrats being killed earlier this year, this, it's all bad. Don't need to feel too bad though, a certain Charlie Kirk said empathy is just a made-up 'New Age' term, so we certainly shouldn't have it now, I guess.
  9. Just in time, I see!
  10. We booked our appartments today, one for myself, Bruna (who will of course only stay a few days, until she goes to the Olympic village if all goes well) and her parents, one of my dad and my sister and by a stroke of luck, in the same building Location looks to be amazing, in a nice little town, Tramin, which is quite literally the birthplace of the Gewürztraminer grape/wine and has a ton of wine shops and producers and such, that's gonna be a three week long tasting
  11. Gdansk as well, I saw? That's not an "oops, missed the target by a bit" kind of distance neither.
  12. Yep, NATO allies Two F-35's flew over our house today, but I don't think they were involved in this, those are probably still stationed in or near Poland
  13. Looks like F-16's and F-35's have shot down a bunch of presumably Russian drones over Polish territory.
  14. No idea, but I would be incredibly unsurprised
  15. Looks like some of the Hamas leaders who preferred to say big words from their cozy residences in Qatar have found those residences to be somewhat less valuable, considering Israel bombed them today.
  16. Absolutely brilliant run for Jackson Goldstone yesterday, taking a well-deserved first Canadian world downhill title. Based on this year, with his four consecutive wins (and nearly a record 5th), he deserved it more than anyone, no doubt. Silver for Henri Kiefer, bronze for Ronan Dunne, the first ever German and Irish downhill medals among the men. Valentina Höll has been fast all year, but hadn't managed to get a win yet since the 2024 world championships...until yesterday, a brilliant run and a 4th consecutive world title Myriam Nicole and Marine Cabirou adding two more medals to the historically large French downhill medal haul.
  17. Memphis Depay opened the score for against Lithuania, his 51st goal for the national team and with that, he has surpassed Robin van Persie and is now the sole all-time goalscorer (the number is relatively low because we've usually had not one single superstar, but a fairly large number of prolific scorers). Glad that hype is now finally over, and since I'm just not much of a Depay fan, I'm not unhappy it ended in what looks to be a bit of a dead atmosphere somewhere in Lithuania instead of in Rotterdam a few days ago
  18. Exactly, but at least there one could kind of expect it, since it's usually shown on one thing and then the World Games is just a whole different thing. Here it's both on HBO though..
  19. Ugh, listening to a certain commentary team all year long during the World Cups, and then for the World Championships they aren't there And it's both on HBO, so that shouldn't be the reason..
  20. Reacting publicly like that sounds more like kind of a sore loser. You often see the same in darts: if someone is just being destroyed, which can happen, a small victory like a leg won (or a game, in tennis) is 'celebrated'. Obviously they're not actually super happy about winning it, but if you're being destroyed despite trying, you gotta make what you can out of it. Better go down with a smile and go for it again next time, then just get all mad (for some people at least, it really depends on what gives you strength, for some that is anger, for others that is feeling happy or simply being able to accept what happens).
  21. Roy Jones Jr has his 1988 Olympic gold medal, because his opponent in that final didn't consider himself the winner.
  22. Let's keep basketball scores in the basketball thread, shall we?
  23. Yeah, just like there are guys who only want women who look like super models, no matter what kind of person they are No thanks, I'd like to actually be happy with my partner (which I am) instead of just focusing on one thing
  24. I know for celebrities it's often different, but in real life not everyone only falls for either material or superficial things
