  1. I decided to check out the athletes by their home province/territory. Sadly no one from Newfoundland & Labrador, Prince Edward Island or any of the territories are competing. Ontario - 171 British Columbia - 94 Quebec - 58 Alberta - 28 Nova Scotia - 8 Manitoba - 5 Saskatchewan - 3 New Brunswick - 1 Additionally two athletes (Eli Schenkal, fencing and Janine Beckie, football) are listed as other, both have hometowns in the United States. Overall, BC has the highest amount of athletes relative to its population, even far surpassing Quebec in the overall count despite having about 50% more people.
  2. Yeah, I imagine other African/Oceania nations have teams, but funding for a niche team sport is probably non-existent. Even for South Africa there was talk about them withdrawing due to lack of funds.
  3. There was no African or Oceania Championships. Basically, FINA asked if anyone was interested and only South Africa and Australia said yes.
  4. Yeah, false positives are still an issue. It may not be as bad as it was at the beginning of the pandemic (where almost 30% were false positives), but we could see a couple dozen athletes (especially if athletes are tested multiple times) getting a false positive. That's why a second test to confirm is important.
  5. Considering their performance against United States and Australia, it's possible.
  6. Pretty good first two days, the level of competition seems quite even, even if the favourites have so far won each match.
  7. Yeah outside of the first few minutes against Japan, the women's team looked quite lackluster. If they want a medal, they'll need to step it up.
  8. I'd wait for the next match against before making any predictions. If it's another struggle while Japan crushes Mexico then it might be Japan's gold to lose.
  9. Not sure about, gold (have they played together in the past?), but on paper this is our best option for mixed doubles so it's great we get to see it.
  10. Pretty much. Welcome to any major water source near a major city. In fact, Tokyo has as many people living in it as all of Canada.
  11. I'd take a medal in artistic swimming team . Also no swimming relay medals for Canada is a bit weird.
  12. Surprised rugby sevens finished last by a lot. I also thought athletics would be a bit higher, but the average American knows the sport as track & field so maybe there was some confusion.
  13. Lessmann is injured, but Germany really wants her to compete, but if she can't then Gruhn will compete. I guess both were entered...
  14. The ITF isn't responsible for giving points, it's the ATP/WTA and last I heard (this was years ago) they refuse to give points until the IOC/ITF compensate the major tournaments held during the same week as the Olympics
  15. I mean even a 500 level event (or that hybrid 1000/500 points they gave at prior Olympics) would be enough to encourage more people to stay. Really at this point there's no money and no points and Olympic gold isn't enough of a draw for what is essentially "working for free" for a week.
  16. Sadly, I think it's too late for her. There's a reason why she lost the Olympic qualifier to Katie Vincent
  17. I think one of their road cyclists (Chloe Dygert) is competing in track cycling so there isn't an increase in athlete quotas.
  18. That's cool to see, his partner Tyler Paige also has us as a source. Not that I interviewed them of their ambitions, the date cited was the same day I wrote about them qualifying to the Olympics.
  19. Blame the IOC putting hard limits on the number of athletes per event
  20. It's a bit more complicated due to nations exchanging quotas for other events (plus all the double starters). This is going to be a long process...
  21. So did those two missing women's trap quotas get reallocated?
  22. It should have been 4 (one for each continent), but Asia got an extra spot
  23. Weird that 5 world quotas were awarded in women's flyweight (even though that was the original plan, all weight classes were reduced to 4)
  24. Denmark and Israel decline the women's 4x200m freestyle relay and were replaced by Turkey and South Africa Switzerland and Finland declined the women's 4x100m medley relay and were replaced by Denmark and Spain
