  2. In the qualification document, they wanted 10 nations to participate in the team event (they reserved quotas to ensure that) so Poland benefited from that. It's either them or Estonia, the depth in Nordic Combined is very shallow.
  3. I mostly looked at recent results and compared it to the sport's qualification system. I didn't keep tabs on specific people since for some sports it's done through nation rankings (and the project was ambitious enough already). I also assumed every nation will accept all their quotas (which likely won't happen). For Poland the sport breakdown is... Alpine Skiing - 3 Biathlon - 8 Cross-country Skiing - 7 Figure Skating - 2 Luge - 4 Nordic Combined - 4 Short Track Speed Skating - 4 Ski Jumping - 7 Snowboarding - 3 Speed Skating - 9
  4. Here's my simulation of the number of athletes for each country. Note I did not take into account injuries (or people missing out due to COVID) and potential athletes that will reactivate themselves during the 2021-2022 season (since I have no information on them). In total 91 nations will participate. Let's see how far off I am in 2022. Albania - 1 American Samoa - 1 Andorra - 5 Argentina - 9 Armenia - 4 Australia - 34 Austria - 110 Azerbaijan - 3 Belarus - 38 Belgium - 18 Bolivia - 2 Bosnia and Herzegovina - 5 Brazil - 8 Bulgaria - 15 Canada - 206 Cayman Islands - 1 Chile - 3 China - 167 Colombia - 1 Croatia - 9 Cyprus - 1 Czech Republic - 114 Denmark - 3 Ecuador - 2 Estonia - 26 Finland - 98 France - 97 Georgia - 7 Germany - 181 Great Britain - 62 Greece - 5 Haiti - 1 Hong Kong - 3 Hungary - 13 Iceland - 5 Iran - 4 Ireland - 4 Israel - 4 Italy - 129 Jamaica - 1 Japan - 134 Kazakhstan - 31 Kenya - 1 Kosovo - 1 Kyrgyzstan - 1 Latvia - 61 Lebanon - 3 Liechtenstein - 6 Lithuania - 12 Luxembourg Madagascar - 1 Malaysia - 2 Malta - 1 Mexico - 2 Moldova - 5 Monaco - 6 Mongolia - 2 Montenegro - 3 Morocco - 1 Netherlands - 42 New Zealand - 16 Nigeria - 2 North Korea - 2 North Macedonia - 3 Norway - 115 Pakistan - 2 Peru - 2 Philippines - 1 Poland - 51 Portugal - 2 Puerto Rico - 1 Romania - 21 Russia - 209 San Marino - 1 Serbia - 5 Slovakia - 48 Slovenia - 45 South Africa - 1 South Korea - 69 Spain - 13 Sweden - 117 Switzerland - 178 Chinese Taipei - 3 Thailand - 4 Timor-Leste - 1 Trinidad and Tobago - 1 Turkey - 6 Ukraine - 41 United States - 219 Uzbekistan - 1 Virgin Islands - 1
  5. The FIG has announced the cancellation of the Artistic Gymnastics All-Around World Cup Series. Originally, four events were scheduled in 2020, but only the Milwaukee, United States event was held as the others were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with travel restrictions remaining in place it has become increasingly difficult to schedule at least two more events to validate the results. This has implications for qualification to the 2020 Olympics as the top three nations in the men’s and women’s individual rankings were expected to qualify a quota to compete. Following the reallocation procedure set by the FIG, the quotas have been reallocated to the top three nations during the team all-around qualification round at the 2019 World Championships. Thus, the quotas were awarded to China, Japan and Russia in the men’s individual events while China, Russia and the United States qualified an individual female athlete. This athlete will be allowed to compete in the individual events, but can not participate in the team event. Currently the remaining quotas are set to be decided at the apparatus World Cup Series and the continental qualifiers. 6. Yeah, a European Championships can be more cost effective as nations at most only need to build one stadium, if that.
  7. Those 10-15 nations will likely be the largest delegations, that alone would be 40-50% of the athletes.
  8. Yeah, at best the IOC needs to hope that the vaccine is open to the general public ASAP. Which could be the case for many major nations by summer.
  9. The women’s water polo tournament at the 2020 Olympics has been decided with the results of the Women’s Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament. The two finalists of the eight-team tournament qualified to the games. The format included a round robin group stage where all eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals. The event was held in Trieste, Italy from January 19th to January 24th 2021. A draw between the Netherlands and Italy (7-7) saw the two nations finished atop of Group A with five points each. With a better goal differential, it was Italy who finished first in the group. Third place was won by France who fought off a second quarter comeback by Slovakia to win the match 17-9. Group B came down to Greece and Hungary as the two nations had back-to-back victories over Israel (20-1 and 27-2 respectively) and Kazakhstan (13-5 and 23-6 respectively). In the deciding match, it was Greece which finished with an 8-5 victory. The third-place match of the group between Israel and Kazakhstan ended in a 7-7 draw and thus the latter finished ahead due to goal differential. The quarterfinals saw no upsets as the four European powerhouses dispatched their opponents. The Netherlands defeated Kazakhstan 19-6, Greece won over Slovakia 22-3, Hungary finished ahead of France 20-7 and Italy was the victor over Israel 15-6. The semifinals and the Olympic qualification deciding matches saw Greece take an early lead over the Netherlands where they held a 4-3 advantage at half-time. However, the Netherlands were able to prevent Greece from scoring again as they won the match 7-4. The second Olympic quota was won by Hungary who took a 3-1 first quarter lead over Italy and thanks to a six-goal effort by Rita Keszthelyi, won the match 13-10. The final and bragging rights was won by Hungary who defeated the Netherlands 13-11. Third place went to Greece as they won over Italy 10-4. This will be the Netherlands’ first Olympic appearance since winning the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. The team will be hoping to repeat that performance at the 2020 Olympics. Hungary on the other hand, will be looking to win their first Olympic medal after finishing fourth at the previous three Olympics. This completes the Olympic roster for the women’s water polo teams. The final men’s teams will be decided at their respective Olympic qualification tournament scheduled to be held in February. Qualified Nations Women's Tournament Hungary Netherlands
  10. I agree, we have chances in all four sports. I may be underestimating baseball since Canada is pretty strong once you exclude MLB players (which I imagine is what will happen at the qualifiers). We won two golds and a silver over the last three Pan American Games.
  11. As of now the other teams have accepted the quotas so unless a team decides to withdraw the roster is set.
  12. Canada needs one more team sport to tie our record of nine (when we hosted the 1976 Olympics). We have four opportunities remaining (men's baseball, basketball, football and water polo). If we can assemble our best team we'd have decent chances in basketball and football, but that's unlikely (especially since the NBA started its season later).
  13. That's the point, the IOC is creating a situation where nations don't want to host the Olympics because of these requirements when in reality almost everyone is watching the games on a screen.
  14. The stadium capacities are another big issue. If the IOC was willing to halve the stadium size my metro area would be able to host the Olympics with only needing to build sport specific stadiums. If they want more ticket sales they could always install viewing areas or even theaters.
  15. The IOC would have to share a significant portion of the media rights for Japan to agree to that.
  16. That kept them safe until the IOC decided to investigate on an events basis rather than just sport. Of course the reality is as long as the current nations remain viable the sport should be safe (unless the IOC wants to get rid of 1000+ athlete quotas for some reason).
  17. And with the IOC looking to cut quotas everywhere water polo (with no ex-Yugoslavia nations) would look quite enticing
  18. Pretty much, if is wasn't for the ex-Yugoslavia nations adding some depth, I imagine there would be quite the push to get rid of water polo.
  19. While I agree France would be the favourite, I'd give those teams a decent chance at winning. At the 2015 and 2017 World Championships (the only recent ones France has competed in) they went 1-1 with New Zealand.
  20. While France may be currently a step above the other European nations, they would have a tough match against the other non-top 10 nations (Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand) for the final hypothetical spot in a 12-team tournament where one of the top 10 nations is the host.
  21. To be fair, Tahiti is part of France. It'd be like when Hong Kong hosted equestrian events at the 2008 Olympics except French Polynesia doesn't have their own NOC.
  22. A 12-team women's tournament won't be too bad in terms of quality. The bigger issue is due to the lack of depth, we'll get the same 11/12 teams for the foreseeable future.
  23. It likely comes down to how quickly the vaccine is administrated in Japan. At the very least, if they are going to allow foreign spectators they may force them to be vaccinated before entering the country. We'll know one way or another by the end of March/beginning of April.
  24. I agree, but you could run into a scenario where in the last match one team is qualified and thus doesn't play as hard.
