Isn't the event from March 22nd-29th or did the date change?

South Africa's women's rugby sevens team must be quite upset, they were the only team sport to decline their quota. I wonder if FINA will make a rule change if it looks as if South Africa will take the quota in the future. Perhaps make it so that a continental qualifier must take place. Australia won't have an issue scheduling a match with New Zealand. Even if Africa is able to schedule an event, at least there will be some kind of push to develop water polo on the continent.

I'd give or a chance should they have a great tournament. The purpose was probably two fold, to encourage nations to attend those events and to potentially reward a team who wouldn't qualify through the rankings and got a freak result (unlikely, but technically possible). While any nation which qualifies through the Opens would have likely qualified through the rankings it does have an implication for South Korea. The quotas are attached by name so if one of the top South Korean pair qualifies to the Olympics at the Opens the other pair is denied a spot even if they finished with a higher ranking. Of course, what will likely happen is that South Korea would declined the Open quota and just take the ranking quota, but we could see a court challenge because of it.

True, but the lethal rate is a lot lower. It's pretty much like a bad flu (not exactly, they are different viruses after all), older/younger/immune compromised people should be concerned, everyone else not so much other than being very ill for a few days.

I mean, figure skating is both, you don't see too many outdoor events anymore. I'm not talking about moving all indoor sports, just the ones that take place in winter. Track cycling would sometimes overlap with the Winter Olympics if they were held on the same year. We'd also just drop the summer/winter designation, just call it the Olympics and host it every two years, one in February and the other in August. The "February games" will have sports which typically have their World Championships between November-April while the "August games" will have sports which typically have their World Championships between May-October.

To make the Winter Olympics a more global event it'll likely have to become a "Winter & Indoor Olympics." For anything held inside, the weather outside doesn't matter. Handball is a good example, their World Championships are in December/January so it isn't a huge stretch to have the Olympics in February. It'll also help balance the two Olympics.

While I'm okay with them giving non-core teams an opportunity to practice before the Olympics, it is a bit unfair that Japan is getting everything so far, especially when you have South Korea also competing. Should have been 2-3 legs each for Japan and South Korea and the rest for other nations.

I think so, looking at this document "Winner and runner-up are directly qualified for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, provided all other eligibility requirements for the available quota are met according to the Qualification system." I guess we'll know for sure if an "Olympic qualification" bracket is made because I suspect one (or both) finalist will be from nations already qualified.

The Qatar and Japan Open are also qualifying events. It looks like they just chose the first three platinum World Tour events

Perhaps, but they have already added the Miami World Cup qualifiers so it would make sense for American Samoa to be included now. Maybe there's a push to get the boat or even the whole event disqualified. Looking over the documents they did have the possibility to cancel the event if fewer than 10 boats were entered though they would have done it beforehand not after. Another possibility is maybe the American Samoa boat didn't follow regulations. All you need is for someone to go on a fishing expedition and I imagine they would find something that wasn't 100% by the book. The less conspiracy theory is that it takes longer for the full results to be submitted vs. a World Cup event.

The Oceania women's 470 quota was reallocated to the highest ranked eligible nation in the women's 470 at the 2019 Worlds (Switzerland). It only goes to the laser radial if there are no more 470 quotas remaining.

There's a rule that an event must have three eligible NOCs to be eligible to be a qualification event. Based on early reports, only the Men's C1 will be a direct qualifier ( are competing) . The quotas will be first reallocated to the best Oceania nation in the World Rankings (as of June 1st), but if there are fewer than three eligible nations then it'll reallocated to the best Oceania nation at the 2019 World Championships. Assuming other nations don't show up on the world rankings, the other three spots will be decided at the world championships. will get the men's K1. and would technically get the women's K1 and C1 respectively, but I think they will decline them because they will have an athlete that will be a double starter. Meaning they will be reallocated again. Since there would be no more eligible Oceania athletes in women's K1 and C1 it'll go to the highest ranked overall nation at the World Championships, and respectively.

I'm glad they delayed it to March, would have been hard for all the athletes to change their plans on such short notice.

Not sure if that's feasible. Outside of Laser/Laser Radial there aren't many other nations competing in North America/Caribbean so we'd end up with a lot of reallocated spots. For example if we had the same restriction as rowing we would have reallocated the Women's RS:X, 470 and 49erFX and possibly the Men's 470 and/or 49er, depending on which boat Mexico decided to compete in. What hurts more is that they reduced our Laser/Laser Radial continental quota down to one and made the other one a competition against Central/South America
