  1. To be fair, the rankings originally had no barring on the qualification. The cancellation of the Pan America and World qualifiers caused this. Though the original reason as to why the World qualifiers were cancelled was because the European qualifiers were going to be delayed. In hindsight they should have cancelled the European qualifiers which haven't been completed and ran the World qualifiers. It would at least give athletes who were injured/pregnant in 2018/2019 a chance to qualify along with athletes who simply became better relative to what they were two years ago.
  2. I doubt there will be much PR damage, especially outside of Canada. Most people are understanding of the situation we are in and that some athletes will be unfortunately affected by it. If anything, it can be spun around to Canada trying to whine/complain its way to Olympic quotas. We are already pushing for a quota in canoeing and to a lesser extent a team in equestrian.
  3. For Iran their choice only effects Kuwait (they will get the opposite gender). For Indonesia their choice effects Hong Kong and South Korea. If they pick LM2x then South Korea gets LW2x and Hong Kong gets W1x. If they pick LW2x then Hong Kong gets LM2x and South Korea gets W1x. Everyone else has their quota settled.
  4. Yup, the host quota is first reallocated to the Asia/Oceania regatta, but since we only have five eligible boats the quota will get reallocated to the Final regatta where Japan finished third. Japan could have saved the craziness by just taking the W1x and LW2x quotas and then keep the M1x host quota.
  5. Kuwait's quota depends on which quota Iran picks (they'll get the opposite). That's because if Iran picks the men's quota then six nations will have taken a quota ( ) and 13th place Kuwait won't be eligible. This is similar to the Philippines and Thailand where they finished with a higher rank in a lightweight boat, but are not eligible due to three nations already qualifying. Regardless the women's single sculls host quota will be reallocated and as you mentioned it funnily goes back to Japan.
  6. France won a boat quota at the 2019 World Championships due to reallocation, but because Etienne Hubert also competed in the K2 1000m where France also won a quota they didn't win an athlete quota so the athlete quota was then reallocated to Spain (declined due to too many men's kayak quota) and then Argentina. So basically, France must compete in the men's K1 200m, K1 1000m and K2 1000m, but can only select three athletes.
  7. There's no point in Canada sending an athlete in men's K1 since we already have the max athlete quota. If we are going to send anyone it would be in the men's C1 1000m and women's K1 200m
  8. Looks like we may avoid a nation winning in the K2/C2 and K1/C1, forcing them to choose
  9. It looks like at least two athletes need to compete for the Oceania quota to be valid.
  10. That depends on your definition. The team with the lowest attempts at qualification so far is Liberia at 2 events, but they at least qualified someone in one of their attempts. Somalia has only ever competed in athletics. Brunei has the lowest average team size among all nations while Bangladesh has the lowest average team size per capita. Mauritania and Tuvalu probably deserve some mention too.
  11. There's still a few nations that could qualify without a wild card/tripartite quota. For sure some of the final 40 will qualify in athletics, badminton, judo and weightlifting. Maybe in taekwondo at the Asian qualifier, it'll depend on the draw and perhaps in swimming depending on how far down the list of OST qualifiers we get.
  12. For slalom at least I'd argue those voices already exists. Too Euro-centric, requires a sport specific stadium...
  13. Were the boats able to get out today or did the bad weather prevent them?
  14. That's the Marshall Islands flag, the flag for Nauru is
  15. It comes down to the number of quotas available. If canoe slalom got 36 athletes per event like in modern pentathlon then I imagine they would allow two or three boats from the same nation. As of now, the C1 events have too few to justify nations doubling up. For K1 you could, maybe include a rule where nations can't qualify a second boat via the continental qualifiers.
  16. Mostly because Asia doesn't want the increased competition. It's not like Australia is some weak sporting nation. Australia (or New Zealand) likely takes a hypothetical combined continental quotas of basketball, field hockey, rugby sevens and water polo without too much issue. Heck I would argue that Australia is a top 12 nation in all of those sports Honestly the issue you have is with continental quotas.
  17. No, they will only be given the host quota if they failed to qualify any men's or women's boats. So what could happen is they could take the two men's or two women's boats and then take the host quota of the other gender.
  18. Not really, if we remove the 2nd qualification tournament and trim the 1st tournament to only qualifying the finalists (basically turning it into the 2020 qualification system) Venezuela would have still qualified all nine of their athletes in 2016.
  19. Correct, though I'm not sure if many nations will choose to go that route...
  20. No they are only given the host quota if they failed to qualify in any men's or women's event. The host quota is reallocated to the next highest ranked nation at this regatta. Unused Host Country Place(s) will be reallocated to the NOC of the next highest placed boat in Single Sculls in the respective gender at the Asia-Oceania Continental Qualification regatta that has not yet qualified a boat for the Olympics at either the World Rowing Championships or the Continental Qualification regatta.
  21. That is incorrect, China would be allowed to compete in the K1 events. In fact, a nation can now enter up to two boats per event. The only requirement is that the nation must compete in the event they originally qualified in. So China can't have athletes compete in the K1 200m and K1 500m and skip the K2 500m in which they originally qualified in.
