  5. What is the Dutch NOC doing this time, sending 10 people across several sports with no chance of medals? Is that because they've already been forced to book a chartered flight and they need to fill the seats?
    3 points
  6. Aaaaand that's a wrap for us. Dutch NOC waived their rules and selected Ivo de Bruin anyways. But apparently just for the 4-man? I guess to make sure we became reserves #1 for both events. How wonderful.

  7. Still tickles me that the Netherlands' 100th Olympic gold medal was won in... snowboarding. Of all sports.

  15. What's kind of shocking is that Canada only accepted 30 quotas even though they can accept 32 (thought they are maxed out on the men's side).

  16. This very weird. I'm quite sure France beat South Korea, 45-35 in the final. I checked the results page, all results seem correct, except this. Here is the video for evidence. I have timestamped it to play at France's winning point and if you go towards the end, you can watch the award ceremony, with France on top.

  18. has declined one quota in women’s slopestyle/big air. All other quotas have been accepted except in PGS, where no action has been taken yet. will get the quota. @dcro is first alternate. confirmed all their quotas, including the men’s PGS one.

  19. Those are awful high expectations given the state of the world. If Beijing is remembered for hosting games that weren’t a complete disaster then they will have done a great job (see also: Tokyo last year).

  22. What would really annoy me is that if the NZOC don't select Campbell Wright to Beijing then I hope like heck he chooses the USA for future events. 1, He'd get much better support and 2, He won't have to rely on money since he's done it all on his own with no financial assistance from NZ Sport. He's had to find his own coach, borrowed skis etc. Is practically handicapped even before the start line. There's already people in NZ demanding him he go and are putting pressure on the NZOC. If the NZOC can select a no hope Freestyle skier Margaux Hackett who struggles to make top 20 let alone top 16 most of the time and had a few fluke top 10s. Who I guarantee won't make a final of her event, well that reeks of favoritism. It sucks, and I'm not holding out hope he'll be selected. I just hope if he doesn't he goes and skis for the US in the future. At least they'll look after him. I do hope I'm wrong though.

  24. Money is a big issue. Also for some nations funding is tied to performance at the Olympics and it's better to have five top 10 results than five top 10 results + one 30th result.

  25. accepted a reallocation in men’s moguls, so we really have seen it all this cycle now.

  26. And has always had to do everything alone, if I'm not mistaken. No help at all from the Dutch federation.

  27. Yes, she is 11th and Georgiadou is 15th! It's too bad they both can't make it to the Olympics with this current qualification format. I've said this before but I really wish Vougiouka would come out of retirement for Paris, she is younger than Velikaya and Zagunis who are both still top 10. We'd have a real shot at qualifying in the team event if she can get back into good shape. Our next best sabre fencer is Marina Paizi who is ranked 165...

  33. Even better stat: only one athlete that doesn't speak German as their first language has ever won luge gold at the Olympics (Vera Zozulya).

  34. It appears there was a mistake on the FIS site. Canada has accepted three women's moguls quotas, not one. ...or alternatively Freestyle Canada didn't realize that they could nominate 32 athletes (the qualification document is a bit confusing) and fixed their mistake xD
    1 point
  35. Disagree here. First, it's not all about medals. Even the 10th and 11th skiier from Austria could easily compete for TOP 10 results. Moreover, the qualification system would have allowed Germany to send 7 women + 3 via reallocation which is more than entire number of female German skiiers that competed in this year's WC races THAT says a lot about the qualification system. Whatever. Any future qualification system has to secure that athletes from "exotic" nations and WC level athletes do not compete for the same quota places. The qualification system for WC level athletes and those athletes who just represent their country needs to be separated, badly.

  36. Canada won't bow out. They named two alternates as well and will take them if given a quota
    1 point
  37. Provisional reallocations for the women: . We know is not interested, so can already expect theirs. Meanwhile, I can see being content with 6 skiers each, if so, move in @hckošice. is kind of iffy too, but they have only four skier now. Maybe will bow out too? This would potentially open things for and/or . Looks like will miss out on the third spot by one or two places in the final analysis. @heywoodu

  39. True, but if I were Norwegian coach I would find someone to send, even for a three week vacation, just to screw Austria.

  40. Or maybe Norway if they do not accept the reallocation?
    1 point
  41. Since it happened to Austria, I am actually hopeful something will be done in this regards for next time. For starters, 32 spots can get transferred from ski cross to alpine skiing. Easy.

  44. Norway declined so it's official. Jugovac has qualified. She will be a non-factor, but it is exciting nevertheless, as she will get to enter two events.

  45. Croatia now first reserve in female alpine skiing assuming all reallocations will be accepted no idea if the team event has an impact or not, did not consider that. But overall seven quotas declined so far.

  46. By all acounts, this should do it for us, as one of the Norwegian quotas is held by now retired Silje Norendal.

  47. It's a good idea but I don't think authority have guts to allow the kids to be spectators. Even schools have interest but most kids' parents will refuse. I guess you must know what general Chinese parents feel about the Olympic venues full of people. On the other hand, I didn't totally give up any chance. I ask my friends working in government to ask if it's allowed bring their friends to the Olympics as so many invitees prefer to refuse the invitation.
