  1. Tokyo 2020 is coming to an end, I hope you enjoyed following them here in Totallympics! I know not everything was perfect, there were some nightly downs of the forum in the first days and some posts had to be deleted because of abusive behavior by certain users, but I think this is something will always happen on a populated forum. As always, since tomorrow the focus will switch to Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024, we want to be the first to start following the 2024 Olympic qualifications so I hope after some days of Olympic detoxification you will all be back on Totallympics and follow sports with us! In the next weeks, there will be some little forum’s software updates which I postponed to avoid problems just before the Olympics, and we will also move on a stronger server, to avoid forum’s down during traffic’s peaks. I will also have lots of hosting space, so I have thought I can create national sub-domain forums for the nations with lots of users who think their national thread is not enough. For example, I will try to launch https://italia.totallympics.com/, where Italian fans will have their own forum, in the same format of Totallympics but only for Italian fans who can write in Italian. This will allow the Italian community to grow independently in their own forum, and I’m sure Italians who want to interact with the rest of the world will keep using the “international” Totallympics as they are doing now. The great advantage comparing to the National threads is that everything would be more organized, with sections, threads etc., just like here. I chose the Italian example because I know how and where to search for Italian fans interested in the forum. But if any of you is interested I can create other nations’ sub-domains. I will setup the forum in the same format of Totallympics, then of course I would need one person (or more) who will take care of that forum and its development. You don’t need to be skilled with information technology because dealing with the forum is really simple and I could help you, the “difficult” part would be to start a community from scratch. That’s why I am mostly thinking to nations which already have lots of users on Totallympics, but if you are a country’s single member and you know how to bring your country’s people on the national forum once this will be ready, then we can obviously give a try. I think for many countries there are Facebook groups of Olympic fans or some small Olympic forums/websites here and there, and if you can potentially “move” them on Totallympics national forum then it would be easy for your community to grow, and then more people would start joining the forum when they find it on google. It will not be easy, but it might be an exciting experience and not a lot of your time is needed for that. So if any of you is interested to be the “community manager” (this word might be exaggerated, linkedin style ) of her/his country, feel free to contact me anytime via private message and we will start talking about the plan. I will not be able to pay you for that role, but of course I would give you the hosting for free so you would have no expenses of any sort, and you can always count on my help. Thank you everyone who contributed here during Tokyo 2020 and get ready for the next Olympic cycle!

  4. After Final Day Rio: 306/306 events, 86 NOCs with medals After Final Day Tokyo: 339/339 events, 93 NOCs with medals On an exciting final day the US (46-37-38 in Rio) managed to snatch away first place from the Chinese (26-18-26 in Rio). Even on a loss of projected medals for the US team, they have been capable of holding off anyone else. The Chinese however with a better performance compared to Rio. Very fine games for the hosts here (12-8-21 in Rio). The Japanese have turned many bronze medals into golden ones this time. Their judo team has made them proud and the inclusion of new sports have helped them. Especially in skateboarding. In total medals however, they fall short on (19-17-20 in Rio under ) and the British (27-23-17 in Rio), holding off the Russians for 4th place. As stated before, remarkable games for the Australians with a gain of 9 golds and 17 more medals total compared to Rio (8-11-10). South Korea leave the Top 10 while the Dutch did not disappoint after the games have begun troublesome for them. 10 medals were required this time to reach the Top 10 in the medal table. As @Vektor already summarised, the biggest gainers and losers can be seen in his post. 4th place counter* (30) (22) (17) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (11) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage

  6. And here is the comparison from Rio 2016 I've sorted them out by Rio first, so we can make a comparison, what was more popular then. Green means better, red is worse and white is pretty much the same.

  7. What I find interesting is that non-European nations climbed over us compared to Rio, but we have the same placement on the European ranking behind the "Big 5" of and the one mid-sized nation of . There's a big gap between these 6 European nations and the rest of Europe, is in the middle of that gap. The Dutch are now what countries like were not that long ago, they are now the country representing the mid-sized European nations (in terms of population) in the top10 of the medal table. The rise of Netherlands and fall of the Warsaw pact countries kinda represent how Western Europe has evolved over the years at the Summer Games while post-Soviet countries slowly lost their strength after the fall of communism. The Dutch are on the level in Tokyo where we were in Barcelona, for us that was the last time where we had a chance to realistically win 10+ gold and 30+ total medals, Tokyo might just be the start for Netherlands to win 30+ medals per SOG from now on.

  10. I am pretty dang sure that if we were offered seven gold medals coming in every single one of us would have taken it without a second thought. Best Canadian performance at the summer games ever, excluding the heavily asterisked 1984 games.

  12. lol, I can't believe that I almost got it right. I projected 6 gold and 19 total medals and we ended up with 6 gold and 20 total medals. I thought that this was a mildly optimistic projection, my realistic projection was 5 gold and 15 total medals, which for me shows that we did really well. Here's the recap with the results added: Events where anything other than gold would be a big disappointment (projection: 2 gold / result: 2 gold) Swimming, men's 200 fly - GOLD Canoe Sprint, women's K4 500m - GOLD Events where I am expecting a medal no matter what, close to 50% of them should give us a gold (projection: 2 gold, 3 other medals / result: 2 gold, 4 other medals) Fencing, men's team sabre - BRONZE Swimming, men's 100m butterfly - SILVER Canoe Sprint, men's K1 1000m - GOLD, SILVER Canoe Sprint, women's K2 500m - BRONZE Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 77kg - GOLD Events where we have a good chance for a medal, I would say that around 10% of them are gold, 40% of them are silver or bronze (projection: 2 gold, 10 other medals / result: 2 gold, 9 other medals) Athletics, women's heptathlon - 13th Canoe Sprint, women's K1 200m - 6th Canoe Sprint, men's K1 200m - GOLD Canoe Sprint, women's K1 500m - SILVER Canoe Sprint, women's C2 500m - 5th Fencing, men's individual sabre - GOLD Fencing, men's individual epée - SILVER Fencing, women's individual sabre - 4th Fencing, women's team sabre - 8th Judo, men's 90kg - BRONZE Modern Pentathlon, women's individual - BRONZE Modern Pentathlon, men's individual - 6th Sailing, men's finn - SILVER Shooting, men's 10m air rifle - 5th Shooting, men's 50m rifle 3 pos - 10th Swimming, men's 400m IM - 4th Swimming, women's 400m IM - 5th Swimming, women's 200m fly - 4th Swimming, women's 10km - 4th Swimming, men's 10km - SILVER Water Polo, men's - BRONZE Water Polo, women's - BRONZE Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 67kg - 12th Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 87kg - SILVER Wrestling, men's freestyle 65kg - 5th Events with a small chance for a medal (projection: 0 medal / result: 1 medal, plus a couple of good results) Karate, kumite, 75kg - BRONZE Canoe Sprint, men's K2 1000m - 4th Taekwondo, men's 58kg - 5th Judo, women's 52kg - 5th Swimming, men's 4x100m freestyle relay - 5th Wrestling, men's Greco-Roman 97kg - 5th Events with zero chance for anything (projection: 0 medal / result: 1 completely unexpected 4th place) Cycling - Mountain Bike, women's - 4th

  13. 7 gold is truly unexpected - I think the middle week of the countless 4th place performances that ended with the terrible morning of the two back to back beach volleyball losses really dampened the mood. However, this is a fantastic result for Canadians and there's lots of young performers up and coming. It showed the continued legacy for swimming and athletics, rebuilding of the rowing program (slowly) and real young talent in many sports track cycling, diving, judo among others. Looking forward to the Paralympics and 2022 Winter Olympics just around the corner.

  14. Countries shying away from hosting the Olympics/other multi sporting events need to look at Canada. Hosted the 2015 Pan American Games, which built the only velodrome in Canada + a new pool in Toronto (there were only two, older pool in all of the region). And it has turned around and provided Canada with 1/3 of its medals here. Without the facilities, I doubt Canada would have this level of success. This is also a successful legacy, something that is always omitted when discussing these mega events.

  16. It wasn't a great Olympics for Iran, I was expecting more medals but less gold medals, so I can say I'm OK with our result 3 G, 2 S, 2 B. actually in term of quality of medals this is our 2nd best ever result after London 2012 with 7 gold medals. but we lost two of our serious gold medal chances before the start for stupid reasons and some of our medal prospects didn't even qualify for the games. so it was supposed to be a bad tournament even before the start. and the first week was mixed up with political stupid discussions. at least some better results in 2nd week erased all those bad memories. but I was expecting 1 or 2 gold medals, while our biggest champion failed to repeat his gold from Rio, we had two completely surprising gold medal winners. my country is going through a very tough time, these past 4-5 years were really hard for everybody including our athletes (that's why we had lots of athletes leaving the country), I believe most of our sport federations had something like 20% of the budget they had in 2012. (even though that hurt our minor sports even much more) so it was expected to not see an improvement from 2016. still adding Karate to the Olympics was supposed to be a big deal for us to make up for other sports problems. still it was a great two weeks, another good memory of Olympics in my life to remember forever. I hope for no more global disaster to see Paris 2024 in a better situation.

  18. I have a lot of qualms about the format and the rules, but I do feel like a sport with a well established pro circuit with a lot of serious competitors that was healthy before the IOC got involved really deserves some credit for obviously doing something right (see also: surfing, climbing or my favourite whipping boy, karate).

Best medal-haul ever for Canada in a non-boycotted summer games, highest placing in the medal table since 1992, first team gold in a summer sport since 1908, two big stars (de Grasse and Warner) winning their first global title... this is definitively on the upper end of what Canada is capable of at the summer Olympics.

  21. Eto završile i OI u Japanu. 8 medalja ukupno, 3 zlata, 3 srebra i 2 bronce. HRVATSKA!

It's an almost perfect OG for us with 38 golds and 88 medals with some breakthrough and some unexpected losses. But it's the beauty of sport and Olympics. Start to looking forward to Paris 2024 now.

  29. In 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Greek women won the same amount of medals as Greek men. This time Greek men won 4 medals and Greek women on 0 medals. First time since 1988 that Greek women didn't win any medals. We had Stefanidi get 4th in pole vault, Sakkari in mixed doubles 5th, Bourmpou/Kyridou 5th in rowing, Korakaki 6th in two shooting events, Tzeli 7th in taekwondo, Teltsidou 7th in judo, Drisbioti 8th in 20km walk, Kyriakopoulou 8th in pole vault, Ntountounaki 9th in 100m butterfly, Karachaliou 9th in sailing etc. We are similar to Canada in a way, based on what @JoshMartini007said, because we also are generalists and don't focus on specific sports. All 4 of our medals this year were in different sports. In Rio we won 6 medals all in different sports except 2 shooting medals which were from the same person. In London and Beijing we also did not win more than 1 medal in a single sport. In this way I think Greece and Canada are similar.

Thank you Tokyo for hosting these Games despite the difficult circumstances Can't wait for 2024, it will be the first time in so long that the events will all happen at a reasonable hour for me, finally! While this is super true, the fact that core Olympic events are getting cut down or even dropped, things like skateboarding and breakdancing are getting their place, sorry but watching 10 year olds getting 3/10 at most and winning gold is ridiculous, the annoying attempt to be liked by “young generations “ is ruining the games
