Ah right, I remember you writing about the athletes getting way too much freedom. If I'm remembering correctly, Salimi was among those who preferred to stay up at night playing PlayStation?

Yep indeed he was, he got seriously injured weeks before 2015 Worlds, (video of his injury is available on the net) under training program of his favorite coach Tavakoli, he is back after a knee surgery and started his training only yesterday, it's not clear if he can recover to his old shape in time for Rio or not. at the moment I don't count on him.

at the moment Iran has only 1+1 medal chances, Kianoush Rostami and Sohrab Moradi (and i know you won't like him as a former doper !). Moradi is back after a 2 years (and plus) suspension. since the previous federation announced his retirement to IWF , he could not particpiate even after the suspension, he is supposed to be clear to compete in couple of months but the problem is he has to compete in two IWF sanctioned event before Rio to become eligible. he will miss the Asian Champs, but can participate in IWF Grand Prix in Tehran . still needs one more tournament which apparently IWF will invite him for Pan-American Championship in Colombia ! that's what Tamas Ajan (IWF president) promised to the Iran federation.

ps, Moradi's training record was something +20kg more than Gold medalists record in World Championship.

    Who was the previous coach?

How are the relationships/workings in Iranian weightlifting? For example, in Dutch speed skating there's commercial teams (like in cycling) who of course all have their own coaches, and a "national coach" who mostly doesn't have a lot of real power because the athletes train with their commercial teams.

I seem to remember there are different camps who are strongly opposed to each other in Iranian weightlifting?

That's a LONG story. we had 4 different coaches in past 4 years.

Kourosh Bagheri led the team to win 4 medals in London, before that Coup d'état in 2013. he had to send a very young team which still finished 3rd with a silver medal and four 4th-place finishes. he resigned later, he had a heart attack and could not handle all those pressure on him anymore. they appointed another coach "Bahman Zare" who was NOT successful in 2014 Asian Games and 2014 Worlds then they replaced him with the mastermind of that Coup d'état 2000 Olympic Champion "Hossein Tavakkoli" !! Tavakkoli was junior team coach when some of these athletes were junior and provoked them against his former teammate Bagheri. Those weightlifters love Tavakkoli because he gave them so much freedom ! they could stay for the night, playing play station etc.

later we had some changes inside the federation and the new president probably didn't want to work with Tavakkoli but had no other option since they had only limitted time before the 2015 worlds which turned out to be disastrous for Iran ! thanks to his training, we got so many injured weightlifters. most importantly Mohammadpour and Salimi, Ironically they didn't fire Tavakoli after his poor results in USA, but they fired him few months later, only few months before Rio !

even though they appointed Anoushiravani as the head coach but they also hired a Bulgarian coach probably to supervise him.

  3. After losing few times in quarterfinals (mostly 15-14) Abedini finally made it to the semifinal (and later to the final) in a Grand Prix (or World Cup) event and with this he made history to win Iran's first ever medal in this level of competition.

he also qualified himself and his teammate Pakdaman for Rio :d

How did Papua New Guinea get the 3 seed in the -75kg? He's not event the best boxer in Oceania.

nope, per this ranking (which is stupid IMO) he is the 3rd seed

    http://d152tffy3gbaeg.cloudfront.net/2015/09/1-mens-7.pdf

btw, we already lost one boxer ! and another one barely beat Papua New Guinea !! I think even one quota will be a good result for such a weak team. I hope Mehrabi makes it at least.

  5. Draws are out for Asian Boxing Qualification tourney. you can find them on ASBC facebook account.

none of our boxers will face Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan before the semifinal which means they can't complain ! but since the whole team is in terrible situation I will be happy with two quotas. best chances are in 75, +91.and maybe 91.

So,Russia-Italy and Greece-USA will be first place in groups.

if I understand the rules correctly, if RUS and ITA finish tied with less than 8 goals, NED will top the group

btw, in general tie breaking is a bit complicated in this sport :p

if they finish 9-9, their match against the winner of FRA/GER match determine the group winner lol

  7. based on my researches so far, here is the list of Russian wrestlers who failed the drug test to far, all of them accomplished wrestlers in Greco-Roman

    1) Artem Surkov

    2) Mingiyan Semenov

    3) Davit Chakvetadze

    4) Evgeny Saleev

    5) Stepan Maryanyan

    6) Sergey Semenov

except the last name, the rest are famous, Surkov, M, Semenov and Saleev are World or Olympic medalists while Maryanyan and Chakvetadze are European champions

  8. A bit about selection process:

in Athletics and Boxing, whoever wins the quota should to go Rio without any question

in Archery, Shooting, whoever wins the quota most probably will be sent to Rio,

in Taekwondo, those who qualified through ranking can only be replaced by someone in top 20, in this case Iran has athletes in top 20 in all 3 weights but coaches made it clear than Ashourzadeh, Khodabakhshi and Mardani will go to Rio unless they get injured.

in Cycling, they will announce them after the Cycling season in Iran,

in Weightlifting, they will announce the team few weeks before the games, right now they have 15 weightlifters in the camp but likes of Rostami and Moradi are already safe.

in Wrestling, they had series of trial events and after that they announced a very short list of wrestlers for the final trials in April. in freestyle it will be mostly between two wrestlers in each weight except for 86kg where 4 wrestlers are in the list. also in 125kg they won the quota just today, I'm 99% sure it will be a wrestle-off between Hadi and Ghasemi. in Greco-Roman Abdevali is already selected, we will have a wrestle-off in 98kg and in 85kg, there are 6 wrestlers in the list to wrestle for the spot. beside that they won the 66kg quota just today, I will wait to know their decision about it.

Unexpected quota for us  His quota made up for the disappointment of Satywart (FS 97kg) losing SF yesterday in the last second and Vinesh & Babita in women's section

Satyawart wasn't supposed to beat Musaev but yes he was one second away from the quota and only has himself to blame, what the hell was that Musaev was deadly tired.

btw I watched almost the whole tournament, your Greco wrestlers are no pushover anymore, I see great improvement here, still not that technical but very strong physically and now they can compete with the best in Asia. except for your 59kg and 130kg wrestlers, the rest was really good, that guy Ravinver would qualify if he wasn't in Norouzi's side of draw.

btw where is Amit Kumar ? injured probably ? that would be pity if he doesn't qualify.

  11. At the and, Iran won two quotas here, both Noroozi and K. Ghasemi made it to the final later today. now we have a complete freestyle team. while in Greco, Noroozi just won the quota , he was down 6-0 against the Chinese wrestler but had a great comeback. he is still far from his 2012 shape when he won the gold in London but still he has months left to prepare.

Bahrain despite naturalizing two big names failed to qualify, Abdelfatah (world champion from Egypt 10 years ago) lost to China in semifinal

North Korea also didn't win a single quota, which is indeed surprising. their last chance So Sim-Hyang lost to Vietnam !

here is the list of notable and world level male Asian wrestlers who failed to qualify (or didn't participate)

    Freestyle

    57: Amit Kumar (IND)

    65: Adam Batirov (BRN)

    74: Rashid Kurbanov (UZB)

    Greco

59: Hamid Sourian (IRN), Elmurat Tasmuradov (UZB)

    98: Mohamed Abdelfatah (BRN)

    130: Bashir Babajanzadeh (IRN)

Are you sure that Kyrgyzstan "bought" that Russian? Or the Russian just came because he is not the best in Russia? I don't think that Kyrgyzstan is a nation that can afford some athlete shopping. :d

Yeah you are probably right, Kyrgyzstan probably can't afford that, I wonder if even Bahrain pays Batirov and Abdelfatah for just wrestling under Bahraini flag !? or they will get paid when they win something.

btw it's not like these wrestlers are something special, they are just good to qualify for Rio. except Batirov, none of them can win medal in the Olympics.

  13. Yeerlanbieke Katai of China made the biggest surprise of the day by beating Adam Batirov and winning the quota and I have to say this Chinese guy is really good, i give him chance to win medal in Rio. (China never won a men's freestyle medal) He is already my favorite non-Iranian wrestler ;)

btw Batirov is good but he cuts a lot of weight it won't be easy for him in Mongolia and Turkey.

as for Iran we had our second defeats today :( this one was expected though, we got better draw for tomorrow, I really hope they win both quotas otherwise it will be catastrophic (even though it's already VERY bad to lose two quotas out of just 4 here) and we can't complain about the draw this time.

also, Kyrgyzstan just bought another Russian wrestler ! Aligadzhi Gamidgadzhiev  I wonder how many Russian wrestlers we had here, Batirov, Musaev, Mamed Ibragimov, Magomed Ibragimov, the Qatari guy Ibrahim, Manyurova and there are probably few more I'm not aware of.
