Well New Zealand's standard, in general is that the athlete needs to show that they are capable of finishing in the top 16. For wrestling it's easy enough, just like how he qualified he can literally do nothing and reach the round of 16, should he get lucky enough with the draw.

wrestling ranking system is a bit different, you can lose in 2nd round but stll finish lower than someone who lost in 1st round. this guy will not finish in top 16 for sure. he is the weakest wrestler in this weight by a big margin.

That's incredibly unfair for Namibia :(

Quite unfair , but this is their stupid rule, if they disqualify someone  whoever wins bronze from his side of the draw will be upgraded to silver

but the whole bracketing system is stupid ! the number of wrestlers in each half should be equal. with 6 wrestlers, we should have 3 in top half, 3 in bottom half.

Kazakh media is reporting Sedov tested positive in the 2008 retests.

Besides, I doubt they'd select him anyway after his protest against Ilyin at Kazakh nationals :d

Actually Sedov is banned for disciplinary reason, during Kazakh nationals he showed up with a T-shirt shoeing Alexander Ivanov's picture with something like this "The True Olympic Champion" referring to Ilyin as a cheater. (Ivanov from RUS finished 2nd behind Ilyin)

  6. update about the delegation

Iran will have one swimmer in Rio via Wild Card / Universality places , they give that to 17 years old Aria Nasimi-Shad

    -----------------

Iran Cycling federation announced a list ot 4 cyclists, 3 of them will go to Rio

    Arvin Moazzami

    Ghader Mizbani

    Mehdi Sohrabi

    Samad Pourseyedi

    ------------------

Iran Weightlifting federation officially announced the name of 3 weightlifters for Rio, no surprise at all

    Kianoush Rostami (85kg)

    Sohrab Moradi (94kg)

    Behdad Salimi (+105kg)

they also dropped Ayoub Mousavi from the squad, whch means the last 2 spots will be between Hashemi, Barari and Molaei.

  7. since Belarus federation approved the results, both Mousavi and Ghalehnoei are now officially qualified for Rio, Iran will get one more quota in Swimming through wild card or universality places or whatever. which means we will send 63 athletes (including 9 women) to Rio, unless someone gets injured or something, this is our final number.

    Wrestling 12

    Volleyball 12

    Athletics 10

    Shooting 5

    Weightlifting 5

    Taekwondo 4

    Judo 3

    Table Tennis 3

    Cycling 3

    Fencing 2

    Rowing 1

    Boxing 1

    Swimming 1

    Archery 1

  8. Apparently we will have two more athletes in Rio !

two Iranian hammer thrower competed in an age group tourney in Belarus as invitee and both reached the Olympic standard (and broke the national record), even though they believe they are qualified for Rio but our federation is not sure yet and they are contacting the Belarus federation to know about the validation of this tournament !

here is a link for the results, page 8. I think it was an official competition and they are qualified but better to wait for official announcement from the federation.

  9. UWW official announcement

    https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/united-world-wrestling-announces-reinstatement-of-olympic-qualifiers

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 9) -- United World Wrestling, following recent meldonium guidelines outlined by the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency, has announced the reinstatement of National Olympic Committee qualification spots for the 2016 Olympic Games based on the performances of the following athletes:

Magomedmurat GADZHIEV (POL - FS 65kg)
Yanarbek KENZHEEV (KGZ - GR 85kg)
Sumiya ERDENCHIMEG (MGL - FW 53kg)
Andriy KZIATKOVSKY (UKR - FS 65kg)
Oksana HERHEL (UKR - FW 58kg)

Ukraine’s 125kg wrestler Alen ZASIEIEV -- the only other athlete peviously disqualified based on meldonium results – is not included in the above list as Ukraine qualified for an Olympic allocation during the 2nd World Qualifier in Istanbul.

All National Olympic Committees previously granted Olympic qualification spots will not be impacted by this adjustment.

  10. according to some Russian websites, Magomedmurad Gadzhiev (Poland) is cleared to wrestle in Rio ! we have to wait for the official announcement but as far as I know consider it a done thing.

just for info, Gadzhiev won his quota in European qualifier but got disqualified for meldonium.

now the question is, he will go to Rio in place of who ? Savid Safaryan (who got his spot after the ban) ? or he will take one of those re-allocation quotas won be the host Brazil.

    :INA 2 gold medals :INA

That's what the NOC and the government targets..

Badminton Federation targets 2 golds and Weightlifting Federation targets 1 gold

Gold in weightlifting ?? I don't think so with all those Chinese weightlifters around, medal yes but gold no

even though I would be happy if somebody (beside North Korea) breaks Chinese monopoly in lighter weights here.

At 97 kg we have a former Russian, Albert Saritov, who was granted Romanian citizenship this year. I've never seen him compete; do you know him? how would you rate him?

of course I know him very well, he used to wrestle in Iranian league as well. I would rank him 7 or 8 behind those top 4, Ketoev (ARM), Odikadze (GEO) and whoever Ukraine sends.

this is a tough weight with so many Russian wrestlers wrestling for other countries , beside Saritov, we have Gazyumov (AZE), Musaev (KGZ), Ibragimov (UZB), another bragimov (KAZ) and Ketoev (ARM), they are all from Russia !!!! with these 6 and Boltukaev we will have 7 Russian wrestlers in the competition ! :d

if you ask me he has a chance for medal, specially with this random draw but he is small for this weight, I don't give him chance for the gold but a medal is possible for him with a good draw.

    How good is Boltukaev?

Very good, he just ate Gatsalov (multiple times world champion) alive in Russian nationals, he beat the current world champion Kyle Snyder and the current Olympic champion Jake Varner in Yarygin tourney this year.

even though there are 4 big names fighting for medals in this weight, Boltukaev, Gazyumov, Snyder and our Yazdani. of course there are 4-5 more other good wrestlers but these 4 are the favorites.

Lebedev? So him saying he wouldn't go because he won the Russian champs unfairly was just a load of crap...

Btw, what do you think about Ramonov's chances? I won't ask about Sadulaev, I think it's clear he's the huge favourite.

I never bought it, most probably just a poor translation. cheating is a part of their culture, they will never be sorry of that.

Ramonov is one of the favorites at 65kg, but this is probably the most unpredictable weights in freestyle with so many favorites. if I had to pick someone it would be between Ramonov and Chamizo but both of them can be beaten by other wrestlers. also we have to wait to see if UWW allows Gadzhiev (POL) to compete or not, they took his quota because of using meldonium but didn't ban him !!!! his case is active in CAS now. he will be as good as Ramonov as Chamizo.

That will be a huge huge surprise if Sadulaev doesn't win the gold, he is just too good ! after him I give more chances to Boltukaev for the gold, he is a monster. Ramonov is probably their 3rd chance, I also give good chance to Gedeuv, he is damn good but the problem is he has to beat Burroughs , the second best freestyle wrestler in the world right now. they had a close match in Las Vegas but I expect Burroughs to be more prepared this time.
