Open Water Swimming at the Aquatics FINA World Championships 2019

Amazing result! 4 out of 4 quotas for Germany. Expected gold for Wellbrock, but i am super surprised by Muffels. Very disappointing result for Paltrinieri, although i kind of expected this. He easily has the speed to win gold/silver, but he just hasn't enough experience with open water swimming yet. If he decides to swim this event in 2020, he should do much better there and i think the (very likely) gold in the 1500 free will be a big consolation for him. -

Athletics EAA Under 23 European Championships 2019
OlympicsFan replied to Totallympics's topic in Athletics
21 medals and 9 golds is a great result for Germany. The last time that a nation won more medals at european U23 championships was 2009 when Russia won 25 medals. In terms of golds this is the best result ever for Germany and in terms of total medals only 1999 (25 medals) and 2005 (26 medals) were better. Also with a bit more luck (in men's 100 m, women's 400 m, women's 3000 m SC and women's long jump) and if all the best german athletes would have competed, Germany could have won up to 12 golds and 30 medals. I fear that the U20 european championships next week won't even be remotely as successful for Germany. -

I am quite shocked that many of the athletes (for example the turkish guy in triple jump or the lithuanian woman in triple jump) look rather in their late 30's than in their early 20's. Overall i would say that Germany, Poland and Belarus have the most promising talents here. The only track talents that could someday win a medal at the global stage in my opinion are Herman and maybe Reh. In the field events we saw many more talents that could some day win medals at the global stage. -

He used an illegal substance knowingly, there is no way that this guy should've been allowed to compete during the next 2 years. Also please stop looking for excuses whenever an italian athlete gets caught, i am sure even you don't have the time for that. Clearly people who know more about this than you thought that this can enhance and athletes' performance, so who are you to say otherwise? I agree about the second part, people who use drugs (alcohol, cannabis, cigarettes and so on), clearly have no self-control and therefore are with no use for society. -
Open Water Swimming at the Aquatics FINA World Championships 2019

Really disappointing result for Beck. I hope that she will learn from this and attack the next time. She easily has the speed to beat the girls who finished ahead of her, but she can't just swim with everyone else and hope to outsprint them, she has to attack at least 1 km before the finish line. Hopefully the men's race won't be as much of a snoozefest. I am optimistic that Wellbrock or Paltrinieri will attack much earlier. -

Same is true for the polish guy in the 50 free. Two known dopers allowed to compete in that event. I think swimming is the sport where it is the easiest to get away with doping (maybe except for weightlifting). -

Ultra weak level of competition in many events so far, except for women's 100 m hurdles, women's high jump, men's long jump and men's hammer throw. Winning marks in many events (for example men's/women's 100 m, women's 400 m, women's triple jump) are embarrassing. -

Swimming Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
OlympicsFan replied to vinipereira's topic in Swimming
Did you only count 2 athletes per event? If not, then I don't think this is right for Germany: Men: Poul Zellmann (200 free) Florian Wellbrock (400 free, 800 free, 1500 free) Ruwen Straub (1500 free) Christian Diener (200 back) Marco Koch (200 breast) Maximilian Pilger (200 breast) Marius Kusch (100 butterfly) David Thomasberger (200 butterfly) Philip Heintz (200 IM & 400 IM) Women: Leonie Antonia Beck (400 free & 800 free) Sarah Köhler (800 free & 1500 free) Lea Boy (1500 free) Celine Rieder (1500 free) Laura Riedemann (100 back) Angelina Köhler (100 butterfly) Franziska Hentke (200 butterfly) -> 16 athletes in total (+ Selin and Schwarz, so currently 18 for Germany) -
Swimming Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Athletes who hit the qualification times at european junior championships: Men: Artem Selin 50 free (21.83) Robin Hanson 200 free (1:46.93) Sven Schwarz 800 free (7:53.74) Ilia Sibirtsev 800 free (7:53.34) Aleksandr Egorov 800 free (7:52.83) Andrei Minakov 100 butterfly (51.66) Apostolos Papastamos 400 IM (4:15.18) Women: Giulia Salin 800 free & 1500 free (8:29.19 & 16:13.59) Beril Boecekler 1500 free (16:21.39) Viktor Mihalyvari Farkas 1500 free (16:26.03) Daria Vaskina 100 back (1:00.17) Erika Gaetani 200 back (2:10.28) Anastasyia Shkurdai 100 butterly (57.39) Evgeniia Chikunova 200 breast (2:21.07) Not sure if some of them (Minakov, Vaskina, Shkurdai, Chikunova) didn't already hit the qualification times earlier ... ? Boekecler, Gaetani and Chikunova (all born in 2004) must be among the youngest "qualified" athletes on the women's side, while Minakov, Selin and Schwarz (all born in 2002) must be among the youngest "qualified" athletes on the men's side. I think this as well shows that the qualification time for women's 1500 free (and also women's 800 free and women's 200 back) is way too soft ... -

Don't see the problem to be honest, we have other great sports now like breakdancing or climbing, let's just hope that race walking will follow soon. -
Caught for what? It is obvious that she is a more masculine version of Semenya, but IAAF thought that it is ok for someone like her to run the 400 m while Semenya shouldn't be allowed to run the 800 m.
-
45 medals should be the minimum, i hope for 50. - Archery: I would say 0-2 (women's team + women's individual) - Athletics: How do you get 7 medals as maximum? 2 x men's javelin, men's discus, men's high jump, men's 20 km race walking, men's decathlon, women's 1500 m, women's 5000 m, women's 100 m hurdles, women's 4 x 100 m relay, women's long jump, women's triple jump, women's shot put, women's discus throw, women's heptathlon, women's javelin throw - Boxing: How do you get 2 medals as maximum? Apetz, Wahner + at least 2 medal chances on the men's side - Equestrian: How do you get 6 as maximum? 2 x eventing, 3 x dressage, 2 x jumping - Fencing: How do you get 3 as maximum? Men's sabre, men's sabre team, women's foil - Golf: I would say 0-0 ... - Rowing: I would say 2-6 or 2-7 (men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, men's eight, men's single sculls, men's lightweight double sculls, men's four, women's double sculls) - Shooting: I would say 1-5 or 1-6 (2 x men's rapid fire pistol, men's trap, women's 50 m 3 positions, 1-2 x women's 25 m pistol + mixed events ...) - Swimming: I would say 1-7 or 1-8 (men's 400 m, men's 800 m, men's 1500 m, men's 10 km open water, men's 200 IM, men's 200 breast, men's 100 fly, women's 200 fly + maybe women's 1500 free or women's 10 km open water) - Tennis: I would say 1-3 or 1-4 (Zverev (it is best of 3 after all), Kerber, mixed doubles, women's doubles (Kerber + Görges) + maybe men's doubles ...) - What about gymnastics? Women's uneven bars, women's balance beam ...
-
Yeah, their relay is pretty good, but a medal would be a major surprise. Even if the US drops the baton as usual, Japan + GB are clearly better individually and Canada + Jamaica + China + Turkey + South Africa + France + Netherlands are all on at least the same level individually (in my opinion), so i think even making the final would be quite a success for Brazil.

Women's Football Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
OlympicsFan replied to vlad's topic in Football
I didn't say that they have a shot at winning gold in 2020, but they have been world-class in the past and i believe that they could get there again. No other country has a better shot at winning gold in field hockey and ice hockey. I see no way that Canada, Sweden, Czech Republic or Russia (maybe they have a tiny chance on the women's side some day) will win gold in field hockey in our lifetime. I think we can also agree that Argentina, the Netherlands, Australia, Spain, Pakistan, India, Zimbabwe or New Zealand won't win ice hockey gold anytime soon ... I would say USA has the best chance ahead of Germany and Russia/Canada. Germany might have a shot to win hockey gold in 2022 if all the big nations compete without their NHL players and if for some reason Draisaitl, Grubauer, Kahun and Seider will play for Germany. -
Agree, completely ridiculous. As far as i know his PB wasn't even 21 m+ before Rio and then he suddenly improved by more than 1.5 m in 3 years in his mid 20s. I don't really see how brazilian athletics got crazy good? In 2016 they had Braz da Silva and Murer as medal contenders, now those 2 are gone and they only have Romani as medal contender (+ maybe a small outside chance in women's triple jump). 2015: 20.90 m at the age of 24 2016: 21.02 m at the age of 25 2017: 21.82 at the age of 26 2018: 22.00 at the age of 27 2019: 22.61 at the age of 28
