De_Gambassi reacted to Dunadan in Women's 3x3 Basketball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Yesterday was indeed an awesome day for the Mongolian league with 4 tournaments and 400,000 points gained. Today they played only 3 tournaments, rumor has it that players asked for a lunch break. Hopefully this selfish act won't hurt their chances to qualify.

For Mongolian events there are links to their Facebook live stream, you can watch their top 100 or 200 players being held captive to play each other every day

I fear the worst, the 5 millions points Mongolia night of 3*3 basketball is coming upon us..

De_Gambassi reacted to MHSN in Women's 3x3 Basketball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
it seems Mongolia is outsmarting Iran. and don't forget Chinese Taipei. they also scored 370,000 in one night
but I wonder if these events are real ?! I mean who is going to observe local events ?! national federations right ? can't they just fill some forms and put some random results ?! even though that's not much different than having "fake events"

24 hours latter, somehow we scored 120,000 points in one night and Mongolia 350 000 !

Up to three.
1) Frasca will probably qualify through the all-around.
2) Ait Said (still rings) must finish in the top 3 among nations that did not qualify a team. So far we have Turkey, Greece and probably Italy in the final; if Italy doesn't qualify a team, that makes 4 eligible gymnasts ( Ait Said, Çolak, Petrounias and Lodadio) for 3 quotas. And tomorrow we'll probably have qualifying for the final, what makes it even more confusing.
3) Tommasone could qualify through the pommel horse, if he makes it to the final (he's currently 4th). Once again, we should worry about nations without a qualified team, and is already one of them. Probably or or even could qualify and make things confusing too.

De_Gambassi got a reaction from VolleyRuller96 in Men's Volleyball CEV European Championship 2019
Well, historically it's a volleyball city. They have been playing in first league for probably ever. It was a reasonable choice considering the size of the Arena (9-10K) and its history withe sport.
It just shows the lack of popularity of volleyball in this country...

Hazena is handball in czech Česká házená is Czech Handball, it is still played here and there but never gained the popularity the game had before the WWII times. btw Slovenská Hádzaná "Slovak Handball" is a synonym used for alcoholic drinking game in both countres

De_Gambassi reacted to ofan in Men's Basketball FIBA World Cup 2019
FIBA's wishful thinking comes from the fact that basketball is probably the most universally-played team sport outside of soccer, due to the fact that you can play it cheaply on a street corner, and there is not an economic barrier to participating as there is with other team sports. However, the sport is still so US-dominated because of the strong AAU, high school and collegiate program in North America, and because soccer is not quite as popular. Since the sport lives and dies by US interest, as Vektor said, it will never reach the level of the FIFA World Cup. I also agree with Vektor that the situation with club soccer is not comparable as LDOG suggested - the long tradition of international soccer will keep the FIFA World Cup on top for at least the long-term foreseeable future. You can look no further than the competitiveness of the bidding process to host these events - countries line up for FIFA, but no one outside of Asia really seems to want to host the FIBA World Cup.

So, any man who declares himself to be a female can participate in 2028 Olympics in women categories?

De_Gambassi got a reaction from Jinzha in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Sports Programme
"Gender equaity" for exemple. Bach might have formalised it, but it was in the making for a long time before him. We didn't wait for Bach to introduce both female wrestling and boxing.
(percentage of women events during the summer olympics)
And honestly as much I don't like that policy at all, I understant why IOC could have chosen to cave in under political pressures. Bach or not Bach il would have make little difference.
It's the same for your other points really, it's only IOC trying to survive the current economic and political climate. I'm not taking Bach for responsable here. There is little him or some other guy could do.

De_Gambassi reacted to ChandlerMne in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Sports Programme
Gender equality follows political changes in that area. So, yes, you are completelly right.
When i see your chart, i see that percentage of women doubled in the period between 1980-2000. Samaranch was president in that period. That's a period when women got (well deserved) rights in majority areas of life. And i fully support this. I like to see women in sports, in every sport, to be precise. But these days we have 6 women weight categories in wrestling. Same as in MFS and GR. Thats artificial equality. Excluding men's categories where fights are much more interesting to watch, in order to have 6 women's categories (women wrestling just doesnt have that "x-factor")...Up until 2012 it was fine. Now 6-6-6. Thats why i mentioned Bach.
Bach is just one figure that has to adapt to political and other pressures. So, i agree with you. Somehow, i hope to see strong sport administrators, who wont "dance as governments say" but i now its utopic. When rigid Saudi Arabia had to send female athletes, then its obvious that there is a huge force above sport officials.
I feel in which direction Olympics are heading, and i dont like it. I also know that, for IOC, fans are just "sand in the see" and that they wont listen us but at least we can express our dissatisfaction with those changes.

De_Gambassi reacted to NearPup in Surfing Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
After 3/11 events, the following athletes are provisionally in a qualifying position from the World Surf League. Note: athletes from Hawaii are marked with (HAW) as they compete separately in Surfing. I am only including athletes that are qualified to compete on the tour in the selection battle (theoretically an athlete that isn't on tour could qualify for enough events to be selected, but this is unlikely).
Men
(HAW) John John Florence Kanoa Igarashi Italo Ferreira Filipe Toledo Kolohe Andino Jordy Smith Jérémy Florès Wade Carmichael Ryan Callinan Michel Bourez Michel Bourez had a good result in Bali, which allowed him to increase his gap over Leonardo Fioravanti.
American selection battle:
(HAW) John John Florence - 17,415 points Kolohe Andino - 13,875 points Conner Coffin - 11,385 points Kelly Slater - 11,095 points (HAW) Seth Moniz - 9,395 points (HAW) Ezekiel Lau - 2,925 points Griffin Colapinto - 2,925 points (HAW) Sebastian Zietz - 1,860 points A semi-final appearance has propelled 47 year old Kelly Slater, the greatest contest surfer in history and a big influence in getting Surfing in the Olympics, into contention for a spot on the American team.
Brazilian selection battle:
Italo Ferreira - 16,075 points Filipe Toledo - 15,865 points Gabriel Medina - 10,820 points Michael Rogrigues - 8,745 points Wilian Cardoso - 7,970 points Yago Dora - 5,980 points Peterson Crisanto - 5,980 points Deivid Silva - 5,980 points Jesse Mendes - 4,915 points Jadson Andre - 2,925 points Adriano de Souza - 795 points Michael Rogrigues put himself in the conversation for a potential Olympic spot with a semi-final finish in Bali.
Australian selection battle:
Wade Carmichael - 10,820 points Ryan Callinan - 10,735 points Owen Wright - 7,970 points Adrian Buchan - 7,405 points Mikey Wright - 5,980 points Julian Wilson - 5,980 points Jack Freestone - 5,980 points Soli Bailey - 2,925 points Carmichael moves up two spots to take the lead of the Australian battle.
French selection battle:
Jérémy Florès - 12,450 points Michel Bourez - 7,970 points Joan Duru - 4,915 points Florès takes a commanding lead over Bourez and Duru thanks to a runners-up finish in Bali.
Women
Stephanie Gilmore Caroline Marks Courtney Conlogue Sally Fitzgibbons Brisa Hennessy Tatiana Weston-Webb Johanne Defay Silvana Lima Lima comes back from injury and competes for the first time this season, immediately overtaking Paige Hareb for the last automatic qualification spot.
American selection battle (where the real action is on the women's side, the US has 7 of the top 12):
Caroline Marks - 18,695 points Courtney Conlogue - 17,355 points (HAW) Carissa Moore - 17,290 points (HAW) Malia Manuel - 16,495 points Lakey Peterson - 11,305 (HAW) Coco Ho - 9,965 The American selection has developed into an extremely close four way race between Marks, Conlogue, Moore and Manuel. They are all basically within one round win of each other at the moment.
Australian selection battle:
Stephanie Gilmore - 19,490 points Sally Fitzgibbons - 16,495 points Nikki Van Dijk - 11,305 points Bronte Macaulay - 9,965 points Macy Callaghan - 6,265 points Tyler Wright - 3,135 points Van Dijk finished third in Bali, but it didn't help her get a place in Tokyo as Gilmore and Fitzgibbons finished 1-2.
