    BTW the tournament is “box until qualification”. So with those weights (most) where there are 4 quotas, there will be no semi finals

    Some sports are more predictable than others. In rowing by the time the Olympics start we can guarantee about 8 of the gold medal winners Track cycling is similar. Effectively any of the “against the clock” events we’ll have a fair idea.

    They’re not abnormally small for most nations. Maybe GB is (particularly as it’s a home event) and the US is but for everyone else it’s pretty much the norm. The fields will likely be the same size Ireland teams 2013 - 3 2014 - 5 2016 - 1 2018 - 5 2022 - 16 (2 relay teams)

    most federations don’t have unlimited budgets unfortunately, and most swimmers are heavily subsidised by their federations so I think it’s OK if they set their own parameters

    I don’t think they’ll ever get involved tbh. As long as they’re clear with the athletes before qualifying begins, that’s all that matters really.

    Wiffen, Hafnoui, Short, Finke 4 different continents. 4 outstanding distance swimmers. We could see one of them leave Paris with nothing

    We have one man qualified under Swim Ireland’s conditions (Wiffen in distance swimming). Another has the standard but didn’t get it at the Swim Ireland designated events (Tom Fannon in 50m free) but they don’t compete in relays For Tokyo swim Ireland had to adjust their own criteria to accept an invitation

    FWIW they have said that they’ll accept any invitations for Paris (unlike Tokyo when they said they wouldn’t but ended up having to to fill the relay team) Theres space for Ferguson and McCusker as not a huge amount of qualifiers world wide

    You can add Daniel Wiffen too as Ireland only accepts times swam at world championship or the Irish Olympic trials. So this is his first qualifying time

Last 4 from 2023 3:40.02 3:41.21 3:41.75 3:41.53 Only Ireland of those are here (without their best free style sprinter). The challengers are I think everyone from Honk Kong (also here) is safe from 2023
