  11. In 2018. Norway gave up an event quota in the men's 500m and the quota from Russia were taken away because of the doping scandal. Four reserves replaced them. So keep your hopes up.
  12. Some countries only have 1 skater who met the qualification time. So let's say Marten Liiv or Cornelius Kersten gets injured/COVID or they decide to focus only on the 1.000m (unlikely), then there's no one from Estonia or GB who can replace him on the 500m.   15. 17 event quotas (3x 500m/1000m/1500m/5000m, 2x 10000m/Mass Start + team pursuit), but only 9 skater quotas, so a maximum of 9 different Dutch male skaters can go to Beijing to compete. Today the national ice skating association (KNSB) has published how they will determine which 9 skaters will go. Once again, the Dutch association asked scientists from the University of Groningen to come up with these matrices. The matrix shows the selection order for the skater quotas, based on the distances on which the mathematicians believe the Dutch have the highest chance of earning a gold medal in Beijing. The top 6 highest ranked skaters in the final matrix will always go. It is very likely that the 7th and 8th highest ranked skater will also go and that the national association will select the number 9th based on who they think is the best fit for either the team pursuit or the mass start and who is not already part of the top 8 skaters.   17. Exactly. Belgium for example has 6 quotas on the mens side but only 2 skaters to fill in those 6 spots (Swings/Vosté). Czech Republic has 7 quotas on the womens side, but only 2 skaters who will normally fill in those quotas (Sablikova/Zdrahalova) So on the womens side I foresee no issues, probably around 77-78 different skaters will fill in those quota. On the mens side, I think the total number will be around 87-90. That’s why I was wondering if they would use the unused quota from the women, but there is no rule about that.

  20. I prefer this system then. Of course it would be nice to see Denmark and New Zealand in the Olympics, but Russia 100% deserves to be there after the weird disqualification because they showed slightly too much skin.

  22. It looks as if Claudia Pechstein has qualified again on the mass start. She won her first Olympic medal in 1992 and will turn 50 three days after the mass start final in Beijing 2022.
