  1. Now that both the 2023 and 2024 World Championships are over, it's a good time to look at which countries are eligible for universalities. Looking at the entry lists for both championships, we can compile a rough list of which countries are eligible. The following NOC's are eligible for both a male and female universality quota (123 NOC's, 246 athletes): The following NOC's are eligible for only a male universality quota (20 NOC's, 20 athletes): The following NOC's are eligible for only a female universality quota (16 NOC's 16 athletes): So as of now, we are looking at 282 universality athletes from 159 NOC's

  2. Guatemala's new president Bernardo Arévalo met with IOC president Thomas Bach today to start the process of lifting the suspension on so our athletes can participate with our flag and represent our country. Finally, with this new government and trying to get rid of all the corruption left by last administration, things are working better. more info here: https://olympics.com/ioc/news/ioc-president-thomas-bach-welcomed-the-guatemalan-head-of-state-bernardo-arevalo-to-olympic-house

  4. Same here. I am sure if we assembled some users here, each one in its favorite sport, we would have much better qualifications haha

  5. Loredana Bertè is among automatic finalists in selections, I keep fingers for her, maybe she will finally enter the Eurovision stage. PS. If anybody care about, few days ago I was on concert, in my home city, of last year San Marino entrant, Piqued Jacks and once more I will say that they didn't deserved to finish last with nul points. Their song maybe wasn't the best but surely wasn't the worst one + those guys are so friendly and polite. I wish they will try to compete again, in near or farer futer, with good song, like their one of the latest songs called "The Gum"

  7. because their gender equality doesn't reflect the true disparity existing between men and women, who are NOT equal for a (good) reason in particular, the "gender equality" might be a good thing if we think of equal rights, equal access to the sport, even if they want the Olympic sports to have both men and women's competitions but all the mixed gender events and, above all, the fact that men and women must have the same quota places and the same number of events in any single sport is absolutely fool if there are 10 million male pro athletes and 100 competitive Nations in a sport and 10k pro athletes and 7/8 competitive Nations among the women in the same sport, why should they have the same treatment? things must be balanced and compared to the actual presence of competitive athletes (and I'm talking of long term history and perspective, not of a temporary conjuncture)

  8. This does sort of depend on the sports, competitions and so on. When competing for national teams, I'd say men and women should have the same prize money and such, but in commercial competitions (think club football, road cycling and the likes) it simply makes sense to distribute pay according to what it brings in. One can easily pay a star football player millions of euros, since shirt sales alone will easily make up for that, but good luck making up a 3 million salary for a top female player by merchandise and such..

  10. Italian team update: The following athletes earned a spot on the Italian Olympic team as a result of winning a medal at the 2024 World Championships: Sara Franceschi - W 400m Individual Medley Nicolo Martinenghi - M 100m Breaststroke Simona Quadarella - W 800m Freestyle, W 1500m Freestyle Alberto Razzetti - M 200m Butterfly In addition, Lorenzo Zazzeri also achieved the time set by the Italian swimming federation at Doha so I believe he's also qualified for the team. Well it seems as if all of my swimming prayers (minus Oleksiak) have been answered. Kylie Masse is competing at the Spanish Spring Open this week, she ripped a 27.23 in the women’s 50m backstroke (#2 in 2023-24 only behind McKeown’s 26.86 WR) and recorded a 58.80 split during the mixed 4x100m medley relay. With Angus/Pickrem producing some excellent breaststroke splits during the relays/individual events at Worlds, along with the emergence of Branton/LePage, and Masse/Ruck’s resurgence after struggles in recent years, our women’s 4x100m medley relay is looking good for Paris.

  19. It's likely that will withdrew from this year contest, their entry is supposed to be called "October Rain" and includes those words in song. EBU will probalby force them to change the lyrics and the title, but Israeli television KAN announced today that they will not change anything, if EBU will still demand the change then Israel will withdraw.

  20. what a pity our guys did good in general but beating World #2 Germany was too much to ask. I really hope they don't end up #1 among non-qualified teams in the ranking. that would be really hard to swallow, being this close. the key match was vs Portugal in the group round, If they had taken their chances, they would be in a different path, far from tier 1 teams. these guys made lots of fans here by beating Japan at the Asian Games few months ago. that was a miracle, unfortunately they couldn't repeat it here.

    Bobsleigh

Sorry I meant to say the Men's bobsleigh. The Women, although with not many great results, are actually competing in a smaller field.

  40. I do agree that is a major concern, if not huge problem, with the proposed format. The beauty of athletics is how accessible it is globally. World Athletics needs to make sure it stays that way (and the super shoes and world rankings format are already cause for concern in that regard).

  41. The problem is that globally you are creating two different sports. The high-tech 20% will compete to one set of rules, the low-tech poor 80% will compete to another. What good does that do?

  42. The genders are not equal in sports.Men perform better in them because biology, there faster in running, swimming, jump longer,Throw farther, you get the idea. Therefore when speaking generally more people on average are more excited to watch their events, which results in better pay,and more attention for future competitions.By all means you are free to advocate that the women start throwing a 2kg discus after the Olympics but that will also mean much worse results, and people would be even less interested]. i fail to see the problem, nor do i[and i assure you many other people, including WOMEN] care about there being an equal number of men and women at the Olympics,i fail to see how other than getting brownie points from certain people, that really adds to anything,If more women don't want to do professional sport because ''not enough pay/not enough attention'' too damn bad, they can do something else, odds are they wouldn't have achieved anything remarkable in sport with those beliefs anyway. That's why gender Equality in sports is bullshit, because it doesn't exist, and artificially making it exist will not force people to watch more women's sport, more likely they will turn it off. And no in no way, shape or form should SKATEBOARDING be an Olympic sport, that just makes the Olympics look dumb/childish,but it is what it is,the Olympics will certainly not become more relevant because Skateboarding is on the program, what kind of thought process is that ?

  43. This is after removing points obtained from the 2022 Team World Championships. So teams which made the R16 or further in 2022 have currently lost points while teams with a poor 2022 (like Nigeria and Denmark) have increased in points already. We'll have a clearer picture tomorrow as to who has qualified to the Olympics.

  44. What do you mean in what world? We're higher ranked than them by six places and we have the twenty fifth best player in the world, this is just like us playing someone like America - we've got a very good chance.

  47. It is very similar to the case of Grace Reed in figure skating. She got "sport citizenship" from Lithuania - so she could compete at the Euros and Worlds. But she needed "normal" citizenship to compete at the Olympics.
