  8. I could certainly live with a Poland Games - would represent a coming of age for what is a rather large European country (just shy of 40 million odd citizens puts it well into the Spain category and only marginally smaller than UK, France, Italy) - and, from personal experience, I think the world would be stunned at how beautiful parts of it are - a great way to introduce itself to the world, in a way. Good luck (though if India bid, you might need it!)

Yeah, I didn't realize Peacekeeper Elite was just PUBG Mobile and I imagine China pushed hard for Dream Three Kingdoms 2. Not sure why as something like CrossFire seems to have more interest there. Looking at the popularity of games in the top Asian nations the following games should have been selected. Arena of Valor Dota 2 Hearthstone League of Legends Overwatch PUBG Mobile (or PC PUBG) Valorant They got 4/7 and Hearthstone was originally on the schedule before getting removed. Only Overwatch and Valorant were missing. The next tier of games would be Apex Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Free Fire, League of Legends: Wild Rift and Rainbow Six Siege.

The issue with esports is that it is very decentralized with no centralized governance. Any time one is attempted they ignored the established organizers and thus you end up with this. In hindsight it makes sense that the sport is so decentralized. The genre of games is so vast. It would be like trying to have football and boxing ran by the same federation.

The League of Legends esports tournament is, unsurprisingly, a complete joke of an event. The format is bad (Bo1 group stages with Bo3 single elimination bracket), it is being played on an old patch and the bracket is very uneven - the de-facto final will be the - semi-finals. The only real reason for fans to care is that the six Korean players (most notable Faker) have a chance to avoid having their careers ended by military service. The Dota 2 tournament has a similar problem with a bad format and the de-facto final being the semi-final ( and are by far the best teams, with likely being the third best team). It's really frustrating just how bad IOC and OCA events are at showcasing esports. There is well over twenty years of expertise on how to run sucessful esports events, but whoever is in charge here is just not willing to learn what makes an esport event work. Everything is baffling, from the broadcast to the venue to the choise of games to the format. (At least the Street Fighter and FIFA tournaments have a somewhat sensible format, so there is that).

  15. Dressage really made a huge wave today in India. First equestrian gold since 1982 and first dressage medal since 1986. Had my friends asking about the discipline showed them the highlights and they were waiting for the horse to jump when they realized there were no hurdles at all and watched some best dressage videos of past world champs and enjoyed it.

  17. My body appears to have decided it doesn’t like multi-sports games in China. Just like during Beijing 2022, I am once again experiencing some odd medical issues. It really is a strange parallel. Hopefully my doctors get to the bottom of it this time. On the other hand, it might be time to proactively schedule appointments during The World Games 2025

  21. I think you mean the 2010 Commonwealth Games in respect to India. I bring this up because that was a long time ago now, and it'll be even longer come 2036. I don't think many would have expected China to host the Olympics in 1982 (same time difference). I'm not saying this in support of an Indian bid, I'm just pointing out that 2010 is pretty much irrelevant now. I love Cape Town and it would be incredible to see the Games there, but I agree that it might not be ready yet. I still want Istanbul to host, it's such an incredible city at a cultural crossroads. Poland is interesting, and there's no obvious outsider reason it shouldn't host, but I'll leave its real motivations and finances to people who know better. Budapest is lovely and have done a great job in recent years with Aquatics and Athletics. 2036 might be time to return to the Far East, but having a similar timezone as Brisbane 32 might not make Europeans or Americans happy. If it's Qatar we riot. Of course, unofficially, where the Winter Games will be in 2030 and 2032 will also influence these decisions. It'll be interesting to see.

  24. IIRC our 4 x 100 metres squad won two medals at European Championships with Schippers in the team. Not really a regular ocurrence without her. More generally, before Schippers there was a general feeling that we’re not very good at athletics and never gonna be, with sporadic successes. She proved that a Dutch athlete can be world class, and the level has been raised across the board, with success in youth competions as well. 10 years ago an athlete making it to a semi final at Worlds would be one of the stars of the team, now athletes like Peeters, Jiya and Seedo are bit players. Before Tokyo 2020 I would have considered anyone who predicted that in Athletics the Dutch team could win 7/8 medals at World level as certifiable.

Yes, navigating the quagmire of potential titles can be difficult. The host country’s attitude towards the video game industry may also be a complicating factor in this case. That said, the AESF is a reasonably established continental federation. This isn’t their first rodeo.

It’s not just esports. There’s dumb formats on show across the whole program. I don’t really know the reasoning for it, but this event has not left me impressed with the OCA.

  40. It's amazing to see Sharon tal so close to qualifying positions, she is only the second ever in this sport for the country, she does not have a federation or any competitors in the country, and she is training just with clubs in the different parts of the competition, and she is only 20 or 21, it's just amazing

  42. Yes, this was definitely the boldest of the one's I listed. But this year, he was 6th in the 50m freestyle (21.73) and 7th in the 100m freestyle (47.94) which was his breakout long course meet and he's still 21. With another year of long course training, he has a chance. Probably not a great chance but it's still possible.

  48. She's apparently willing to compete for Portugal. No international participation for São Tomé since 2019 but yet no indication of a transfer of allegiance on her WA page.
