Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Medal Predictions

Definitely not mine - they are from Gracenote Nielsen. They release a virtual medal table for every Olympic and with it being a year until Paris, this is their initial projections. Normally they will release a new version each month in the run up to the games.

Can't you just post a link to it then? I mean, isn't making a post per country too much work?

They only post the headline numbers - media outlets have to pay for the sport breakdown so the only way to find the information is to pull it from various sources.

:USA   43 Gold Medals seems way too optimistic to me, especially with what I’m seeing this week in swimming and water polo.  I have not seen the event by event predictions, but when aquatics produces around 1/3  of your gold medals almost every recent Games, I see a big drop in golds next year.

We should do a comparison against the Latest World Championships Medal Table, if they aren't any more accurate then doing basic counting of defending champions then their method isn't good.

Always funny to see how terrible those predictions are. For team GB:

Gold for Gadirova? Don't see it.

Gold for Hodgkinson? Would still favor Mu.

Silver for Muir? Would be rather surprising ...

Silver for Laugher? First he needs to qualify ...

Silver in men's 10 m synchronised? Possible, but they aren't the favorites for silver.

Silver for Peaty? I think him retiring is more likely.

Silver for Greenbank? Interesting prediction after he didn't even qualify for worlds ...

Silver in the 4 x 100 m mixed medley? Seems rather unlikely ... USA, Australia and China are all clearly ahead.

Bronze for Asher-Smith (200 m)? Would be a huge comeback, but we will see.

Bronze for the men's 4 x 100 m medley relay? Seems rather unlikely unless Peaty comes back sharp (which doesn't seem likely).

Thank you, AD has the 13 gold medals listed:

  • Lavreysen (team sprint, sprint, keirin)
  • Ellen van Dijk (road cycling time trial)
  • Sifan Hassan (10.000m)
  • Femke Bol (400mH)
  • Field hockey teams (men and women)
  • Sailing 49er (men and women)
  • Horse jumping team
  • Karolien Florijn (single sculls)
  • Sharon van Rouwendaal (open water swimming)

Not as odd as I expected, but definitely don't see all of these happening. I fear our team sprint might not win again and it's still a question whether Ellen van Dijk will return at the same level after her pregnancy (and even then Reusser is probably better). Meanwhile McLaughlin is probably missing from the prediction due to a lack of 400mH races or something.

On the other hand, there are some potential gold medals not on the list (womens road race, Puck Pieterse, Marit Bouwmeester and the breakdancers).

Van Rouwendaal in the 10 km open water race? Brave prediction ...

I will do a proper medal projection for :HUN when all the WChs are done this year. For now I would say 3 gold and overall 12 medals without Milák. But that can change if Milák comes back and is in good shape. And we have yet to see how some of our athletes perform this year.

The Latest WCh medal table will probably be somewhat fucked up by the Aquatics WCh in Doha. I wouldn't be surprised if that WCh will be far less serious than the one in Fukuoka, but it will be the latest WCh before the Games.

    • Congrats Diggins, well deserved! 👏   Too bad she fell on the last lap in the last race (as well as Karlsson also did x2).   For the future I would really like them to remove the bonus sprint points suring the race that almost makes more importance to the overall standings than the positions over the finish line. And get back to the same point system as the other FIS events. 30 gets points instead on 50, and 100-80-60... instead of this system. in this case Diggins deserves it and Sweden who of different reasons have missed pets of the season On purpose or not, does not deserve it. But it as it is now it may take 20 wins to catch up for one missed race (if the opponent is 2nd in each). Dahlqvist won the sprint cup without any individual wins (3rd overall) is one example of that.    There must be room to miss a race of any reason. If not, it Will not make people race more events, instead it might make skoters who already missed one weekend feel they are already too far behind so they light as well take less priority on the rest of the World cup season. Also skiiers who in Norway for example would be good enough for a top3 in the overall might not even be selected for many races due to the internal competition. Same for a skiier like Ebba Andersson who most likely would not qualify if she would be selected to go a sprint race. But she would still get a few points probably for rk 31-50, but because she would not make it in to the Swedish sprint team she Will lose a lot even compared to those who fail the sprint qualifications. Frida Karlsson another example, she would also probably have qualified most of the times but is most often not good enough to make the team. With more award to winning and making podiums and also less athletes scoring that would make it better I think. The scoring system in biathlon got some critics when they decided you have to count all races, but they at least increased the value of top positions meaning you could faster catch up a bad race/missed race, by a few podiums.
    • Great to see O’Connor on the podium again! Thats 4 major medals in the past 12 months (World Indoors x 2, Euro Indoors and World Championships).   Her strongest event is the javelin so she is going to continue to be a huge threat in the heptathlon this summer and she is still improving all the other events. Exciting times for her
    • Congrats to Diggins winning the WC in her final season
    • Call me mad, but it feels very strange to have made it all the way through a major championships without hearing how the results were going to lead to a slashing of funding for  sport.
    • Only Fabbri from Italy has disappointed and that's a bit concerning... In 3 of the last 4 major events (OG and 2x Indoor World Champ), he's performed significantly worse than he did on the entire season – he took bronze at the 2025 World Championships, but his result was also nothing special. His performance today is completely incomprehensible  (
