The Barkley Marathon began yesterday . It is known as the toughest endurance race (and I totally recommend watching the documentaries made about it). Currently there is only Karel Sabbe from  left in the race after loop 4 of 5. He to do the impossible to make the cutoff for the last loop. Looks like no finishers again this year . Laz (the race director) wins again.

P.S the is the only race in the world with an unknown start time (there is a period of 12 hours in which the race can start (runners are given a half hour warning before the start)) and the only race starting by the lighting of a cigarette and firecrackers.

@hckosice Good news actually- Ireland stopped because they didn't have a functioning ice rink and were barred. But they are reopening the local arena this year, in part thanks to Canadian funding. So we will likely see Ireland competing in 2020. The same with Mongolia, who are building their first arena too.

If a baby arrives before the 2022 Olympics, you can be quite sure it is not planned

Won't say 'accident' or 'not welcome' of course, but not planned

Who cares. The one true champion of the Championships is ready (well, ready to participate, but it won't be impressive)

    https://olharolimpico.blogosfera.uol.com.br/2019/03/29/sem-lei-piva-esporte-olimpico-deve-sofrer-apagao-a-partir-de-abril/

Basically, it says that because the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has a significant debt with the government, which they can't pay now, no money - at all - will be given to COB anymore. This was done through Lei Piva/Piva Law, which seems to be going to end from April on (or at least until COB works away it's debt).

This way, COB can't divide quite some millions, which they would get via this Lei Piva, to the different federations. I'm taking CBDN (snow sport federation) as example, because that's the one I actually know stuff about, so in their case it mean's that they're gonna depend entirely on the money they get from FIS and IBU, international sports federations. As good as all salaries are paid by this Lei Piva/Piva Law, meaning all money from FIS and IBU would have to be used to pay that...leaving zero money for any infrastructure or any support for athletes. I'm sure the basic workings are similar for most of the other sports federations, except for maybe those that are soo big they don't depend on COB that much.

@vinipereira @thiago_simoes @hoversaBR (and apologies if I'm forgetting a Brazilian), feel free to add or change to this. What I said is mostly a mix of what I read in the article and what I heard from someone who knows the inner workings, but it's possible I got some details wrong or something.

CSKA Moscow won game #1 of the KHL Western Conference Finals...
after Dinar Khafizullin opened the scoring for the guests from St.Petersburg, Alexander Popov quickly restored the tie, still in the first period...
It was then Mikhail Grigorenko at 7.55 of the 2nd period to score the game winner...
after that, it was mainly a defensive struggle by CSKA and some not so effective pressure by SKA, so the score didn't change anymore and CSKA Moscow took the 2-1 win home, which means that now they lead the best-of-7 series 1-0...

    game #1 highlights

game #2 is scheduled for tomorrow at 5 p.m. local time, once again in Moscow (3 p.m. CET)

meanwhile today at 7.30 p.m. local time (5.30 p.m. CET) in Balashikha, Avangard Omsk host Salavat Yulaev Ufa in game #1 of the Eastern Conference finals...
for those who want to watch the game online (paid official streaming, not for free):
    https://video.khl.ru/events/877389?locale=en
those who have a satellite dish pointed at 7 and/or 10 degrees East, instead, will be able to find a service feed for the Russian TV for free (no encryption, crystal clear HD) later today, normally starting 30 mins before the first puck drop of the hockey game...

I can't see both Anev and Iliev making it to the next Olympics. Maube Iliev, if he digs deep. There are some youngsters after them, but it's hard to know if anything will happen with them. There is a possibility, that after 30 some years, Bulgaria won't have competitive biathlon athletes, neither in the men or women..

Thanks for the recap. I’d love to see India at the IBU Cup too. I know Sri Lanka attempted to enter a skier at the Asian Games, but they wouldn’t let them. Argentina and Chile have unentered teams too.

A few more interesting tidbits of information:

US is rebuilding the biathlon and nordic skiing facility in Lake Placid, along with hiring recently retired Tim Burke and Lowell Bailey to help with the National Teams.  In addition the most interesting piece from this article was this tidbit - "the sport’s global leaders are warming up to the idea of a World Cup mini-tour that might include Lake Placid, Utah and Canmore, Alberta."

Claire Egan is not going to retire.  She was so frustrated after the last Olympics, that she almost retired and eventually agreed to one additional season.  She has now decided to come back for more.

And one buried in this article about Biathlon in Montana - Head Coach Rob Rosser served 21 years in the army and was an Olympian in the biathlon in 1998. Olympic coach Andy Liebner, a veteran based out of Michigan who coaches Mexico and Peru’s biathletes, also helps with the training.
Who knew that Peru had a biathlon team.  I had guessed that Mexico did, but Peru, that makes two is South America!

EDIT - Actually there are quite a few countries that have a biathlon federation  - see this list.  https://www.biathlonworld.com/about-ibu/member-federations/
