  1. NBA, NHL, and MLB all officially shut down in the United States
  2. College basketball tournaments are being cancelled one by one very quickly. The NCAA Tournament may not be far behind
  3. More from the league. The tipping point was a player testing positive for COVID-19... Coronavirus pandemic causes NBA to suspend season after player tests positive
  4. Coronavirus causes Ivy League to cancel conference tournament; Yale earns automatic NCAA Tournament bid
  5. And at the same time, risk people contracting the virus and spreading it all over the world. The risk of holding the Olympics isn't just that people attending will get sick, but that they'll be a danger to others. Cancelling sporting events is being overly cautious to be sure, but if doing that for a few weeks might help contain the spread of the virus, that's a small price to pay to potentially save people's lives.
  6. They just finished showing the race here in the states. That was incredible. Can't believe Karlsson actually caught Johaug and beat her!
  7. There is ZERO chance of that happening. That would be a horrendous decision. Everything is not ready. The Coliseum isn't set up for athletics. The temporary swimming venue isn't there. And do we know if UCLA and USC dorms are ready to go? I remember hearing talk that if the Qatar got stripped of the 2022 World Cup, that the United States would offer to step in. No thank you. I don't want their sloppy seconds. As it is with LA.. let them host the 2028 Olympics that they will have spent over a decade planning for. Not to rush up and have a half-assed Olympics.
  8. An Olympiad is a period of 4 years. Hosting them next summer still falls under the same Olympiad. And I hate to tell you this, but I don't think the virus cares about your viewpoint. I hope and pray that the Olympics don't need to be cancelled (also because that would be better for the safety of the planet), but that decision won't be based on our views. It'll be based on what's doing with the virus.
  9. Exactly. I have a feeling some of those events would move just to get out of the way of the Olympics. The OLYMPICS.
  10. If the Olympics were to get postponed and were at the same time as another multi-sports games, I have a pretty good feeling you would have a tougher time watching those multi-sports games and less of a tough time watching the Olympics. Sucks for those other events, but if there's no alternative, that's the way it has to be.
  11. That's not good. But makes sense, especially considering 1 of the participating teams is China.
  12. I live in New York. I see them all the time here, even before this outbreak. Yes, it's mostly Asians, so that's nothing new
  13. He's playing in the qualifiers for the World Baseball Classic, not the Olympics. The Philippines are not a part of Olympic baseball qualifiying
  14. Love that there's someone on the Olympic team who is older than I am! Great to have their veteran leadership headed to Japan
  15. Olympic baseball gets a huge talent-pool boost Players on 40-man rosters not in the major leagues will be eligible for the Olympics. That's a big boost for the sport since originally anyone on a 40-man roster would not be allowed to participate in Tokyo.
  16. Dick Pound was trending on Twitter earlier. Not because, you know, the Olympics are in danger, but because his name is Dick Pound... Dick Pound We saw that a lot from Rio with Zika. I don't think it would necessarily happen here. If the Olympics are deemed safe to go on and the virus is under control, I don't think it will necessarily scare off that many people, particularly tennis players who will have been in Paris and London over the summer. Eh, I doubt this would add fuel to the fire for those guys. Considering what the Olympics have survived through (only World Wars have stopped them), it would be a pretty devastating hit for a virus to cancel an Olympics. The NOlympicsLA folks are fighting a battle that likely only mother nature (or some foolishly hungry Chinese looking for an exotic snack) could beat them at.
  17. Not at all. They'll show the whole thing (minus commercials, although they're good at recapping the countries they miss.. last Olympics, they actually used tape delay to their advantage to not skip over countries). Interest tends to drop off after the United States enters the stadium, so they'll get people watching from the start and keep them around until the end. The Parade of Nations at a Summer Olympics is half of the Opening Ceremony. What exactly would they fill that time with? You're the opposite of most viewers. They want to see the Americans and will lose interest when they get to the speeches, particularly if those speeches are not in English. So NBC is in a tough spot where the primetime show may or may not include the entire ceremony knowing certain portions will see people tune out (knowing the resulting backlash is coming) Fortunately, there will be Peacock to stream the Ceremonies live, so those (presumably) will be shown in full. Plan your nap accordingly
  18. I'm sure they're more fearful behind the scenes than they want the public to know. One way or the other, I have a feeling there are going to be a lot more empty seats at many venues than they were anticipating.
  19. That's nothing.. somehow they managed to schedule swimming, gymnastics, and track & field all on the same freaking weekend.
  20. Having been in Salt Lake in 2002, I'm partial to.. But based on the vote, I'll go with 2004.. "Welcome Home"
  21. Astros fans need to shut up right now. Their organization handled this horribly, so there's nothing they can say or do at this point that smooths over the fact the only championship in franchise history is tainted. At this point, the whole organization needs to go full heel (as if they haven't come close already) and just embrace the hate.
  22. American TV influence very evident.. every single game involving the United States is either 11:05 or 21:45 local time. Not that it's a coincidence or anything
