  1. Olympic baseball gets a huge talent-pool boost Players on 40-man rosters not in the major leagues will be eligible for the Olympics. That's a big boost for the sport since originally anyone on a 40-man roster would not be allowed to participate in Tokyo.
  2. Dick Pound was trending on Twitter earlier. Not because, you know, the Olympics are in danger, but because his name is Dick Pound... Dick Pound We saw that a lot from Rio with Zika. I don't think it would necessarily happen here. If the Olympics are deemed safe to go on and the virus is under control, I don't think it will necessarily scare off that many people, particularly tennis players who will have been in Paris and London over the summer. Eh, I doubt this would add fuel to the fire for those guys. Considering what the Olympics have survived through (only World Wars have stopped them), it would be a pretty devastating hit for a virus to cancel an Olympics. The NOlympicsLA folks are fighting a battle that likely only mother nature (or some foolishly hungry Chinese looking for an exotic snack) could beat them at.
  3. Not at all. They'll show the whole thing (minus commercials, although they're good at recapping the countries they miss.. last Olympics, they actually used tape delay to their advantage to not skip over countries). Interest tends to drop off after the United States enters the stadium, so they'll get people watching from the start and keep them around until the end. The Parade of Nations at a Summer Olympics is half of the Opening Ceremony. What exactly would they fill that time with? You're the opposite of most viewers. They want to see the Americans and will lose interest when they get to the speeches, particularly if those speeches are not in English. So NBC is in a tough spot where the primetime show may or may not include the entire ceremony knowing certain portions will see people tune out (knowing the resulting backlash is coming) Fortunately, there will be Peacock to stream the Ceremonies live, so those (presumably) will be shown in full. Plan your nap accordingly
  4. I'm sure they're more fearful behind the scenes than they want the public to know. One way or the other, I have a feeling there are going to be a lot more empty seats at many venues than they were anticipating.
  5. Well done by the French. Great race
  6. That no. Still poor scheduling though.
  7. That's nothing.. somehow they managed to schedule swimming, gymnastics, and track & field all on the same freaking weekend.
  8. Having been in Salt Lake in 2002, I'm partial to.. But based on the vote, I'll go with 2004.. "Welcome Home"
  9. Astros fans need to shut up right now. Their organization handled this horribly, so there's nothing they can say or do at this point that smooths over the fact the only championship in franchise history is tainted. At this point, the whole organization needs to go full heel (as if they haven't come close already) and just embrace the hate.
  10. American TV influence very evident.. every single game involving the United States is either 11:05 or 21:45 local time. Not that it's a coincidence or anything
  11. As if we didn't see it last Olympics with Zika. Yes, what's happening with Coronavirus needs to be monitored very carefully, but it was way too premature to know how this will affect an event still 5 months out.
  12. It's coming. Potentially in the next few years. Get ready to embrace it. What will we ever do without pitchers hitting!?
  13. The DH isn't going away anytime soon. Much more likely it gets adopted by the NL before the AL gets rid of it.
  14. It's almost as if MLB is throwing something completely ridiculous out there so people will stop talking about all of the sign stealing scandals
  15. LeBron James, Stephen Curry lead finalists for Olympic men’s basketball roster
  16. Yes.. those were live, not taped for primetime. If they have a chance to edit, they will. Swimming obviously won't have that since the finals will be live. Hopefully some of the track & field finals as well, especially the ones in US primetime. But gymnastics will likely be heavily edited. NBC will want to present the routines they believe the audience will want to see, not necessarily whoever they happen to be on live. And if you do want to watch it live, it will be on the app (likely with individual feeds from each apparatus). May not be the NBC commentators, but tough for them to follow everything at once if they don't have to.
  17. The original articles that I had read about Peacock made it sound like there would be 1 event that would be seen later on NBC that would get shown live on Peacock (somewhat going along with what seems to be one of their big draws of showing something before it airs on NBC.. they'll be doing that with Fallon and Seth Meyers). But then it now makes this sound more like it will be similar to Gold Zone, the whip-around show they had during London and Sochi and Rio. Where they will hit whatever is going on at the time, regardless of whether it might air later. I doubt we will get the NBC announcers only because anything that's getting edited for broadcast later, they might not be able to call live. I remember a couple of times with gymnastics at Rio, they caught the NBC commentators in the background sitting there and not matching up with the video, meaning they probably added their commentary later. A lot of the taped events may have that happen in Tokyo.
  18. United States clinches a spot in Tokyo with a 4-0 win over Mexico. They will face Canada in what is essentially a friendly on Sunday. In 8 games, USA and Canada have combined to score 45 goals and have conceded 0.
  19. USWNT not looking great against Mexico, but they're up 2-0. 32 minutes away from the Olympic
  20. They didn't look sharp last night, especially in the first half. Need to improve on that performance.
  21. Probably should have read that part before skipping down towards the bottom, then. That's an oops on my part!
  22. For those in the U.S... NBC Pacts With Twitter For Exclusive 2020 Tokyo Olympics Live Programming The NBC-produced four daily Snapchat Shows are: A highlights/recap show comprising NBC Sports broadcast footage and editorialized captions (premiering June 2020) A single Olympic event highlights show that will be updated in near real time and will feature HD clips of the biggest event happening that day from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and Tokyo Games (premiering June 2020) A daily NBC Olympics hosted studio show focused on storylines, memes, trends and culture around the Tokyo Games (premiering July 2020) “Chasing Gold,” a reprise of the series profiling Team USA athletes competing in the Summer Games (premiering July 2020)
  23. Definitely helps the cause of the Paralympics that not only is it on an NBC owned platform (as opposed to 4 years ago when it was all on Team USA's website), it's on a service that NBC is going to be selling hard over the next few months. I don't think the Paralympics will ever be even remotely close to the level of the Olympics, but this is a nice step in the right direction for them. Looks like Olympic Channel (the worldwide digital version, not the U.S. veriosn) had the rights in 2017. Not sure what to expect television-wise here since they're taking place in the United States. Same host broadcaster as last time, but I doubt we'll get more than streaming coverage here. Mostly because when I first read this, my first thought was "what the heck are the World Games?"
  24. Since I'm likely going to become the resident expert here on all things NBC Olympics, here's what I've gathered on Peacock.. There are 3 tiers of service. A lot of the content is available for free, but it will be ad-supported. That includes things like libraries of old TV shows, plus access to next day airings of shows on NBC. Then there's the paid tier. $5 gets you additional content which will include among other things, access to NBC late night shows before they air on late night (i.e. Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers). And the third tier is $10. That's the same as the $5 tier, except it is ad free. In terms of Olympic content, Peacock will have exclusive streaming of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. I'm guessing that means it will NOT be available on the Sports app, although to my knowledge, that's where all the event streaming will come from. So that, as usual, will be tied to whether or not you have a cable subscription. But there will be additional programming exclusive to Peacock. No idea at the moment if this will be on the free tier or only as part of the paid service.. Plus, it sounds like Peacock will have all the live streaming of the Paralympics. They're promising more than 1,000 hours. And I have a feeling they'll continue to grow as we get closer to Beijing. Don't know if I'll become a regular subscriber, but I'll gladly pay $10 for a month to get all that!
