Nickyc707 got a reaction from Oldira in Swimming Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
The reason GB withdrew was scheduling with two other events taking place in the same session which would have involved women who would have swum in the relay. Given that it was the weakest of the seven GB relay teams it was decided to give priority to the individual events. Similar factors may have played into Poland's decision.

The battle begins between tennis and golf to see how many of the qualified players won't attend the Games.

I know. quite astonishing renaissance in middle distance happening, and at least a couple of them are genuine medal shouts already, though I think Paris may be where the fireworks really start - for now, though, Reekie at 800, Muir and Wightman at 1500 are genuine medal shouts

Stunning run and the 7th Brit to achieve the qualifying time in the M 800m. There are also 7 in the M 1500m, 6 in the W 800m and 7 in the W 1500m. The trials in the middle distance events are going to be something to behold.

I wouldn't base your conclusions on the delusions of one or two contributors here just because their boxers didn't get the result they hoped for. British boxing has little or no influence within the administration of the boxing world. What they have is a great programme and a long history of success. Only the US and Cuba have won more medals in Olympic boxing. The quality of the boxers is reflected in the large numbers who go on to success in professional boxing with significant numbers winning world titles.
The same can also be said of Ireland where boxing accounts for more than half of all the medals won by that country in Olympic competition. The sport has been a part of British and Irish culture since the 18th century and attracts some of those countries top athletes. It is not surprising they do well in international competition.
As far as the fight involving your countryman was concerned I had him narrowly winning the first round with his opponent doing likewise in the second. It came down to the last round and as Dragon said the British boxer just edged it on his finish. It really could have gone either way and that was reflected in the judges scoring. Who ever lost could consider themselves unlucky. I really regret that we won't be having a final world qualifier to give boxers a last chance to get to Tokyo via the ring as your man would have had a strong chance of still making it.

Boxing does seem to have more losers complain of corruption than any other sport. With some fights it’s genuinely impossible for ‘normal’ viewers to separate the two
The only Irish fighter I think was CLEARLY robbed was Michael Conlon against the Russian in Rio. Others have claimed to have been robbed but I wouldn’t agree
the only British fighter I think who was given a fight they shouldn’t have was Joshua in London. He’s proven himself since but he lost that final in my opinion

Britain has put a lot of time, effort and money into amateur boxing this century.
Also remember that England, Scotland and Wales have separate membership of AIBA and England and Scotland were enemies of the former AIBA administration.

Nickyc707 got a reaction from Benolympique in Diving Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
I think GB is likely to have a team of approximately 380*. It's very unusual for any team to use all 16 quotas in diving because the best divers often double up. Like China, GB has won the maximum number of quotas in diving at the last four games but they've never selected the 16 divers to which they were entitled. I predicted that GB would only pick 12/13 divers after the Tokyo qualifiers even though they used 15 divers there.
* I'm a bit uncertain about the numbers mainly because they have qualified for all twelve athletics and swimming relays and I really don't know how many extra athletes they'll take to cover eventualities in those events.

GB have named their diving team of twelve with four divers doubling up in individual and synchronised events. I don't know whether this releases any more places for athletes who haven't yet qualified.

Exactly. Although I’m not sure if that case exists anywhere. Most of the countries who can qualify 3 athletes in an event will probably have one in on time!

You are allowed to have 3 athlets in each individual event, it does not matter if all 3 are with qualifying standards or all 3 via ranking or 1-2 or 2-1. So yes even if you have 1 athlete qualified directly you can add 2 if they are in the cut-off in the ranking
