  1. On top of the Olympic Village, this is where we stand regarding the new venues built for the Olympics. Stade Nautique Olympique (2019, Rowing & Canoeing) Grand Palais Ephémère (2021, Judo & Wrestling) Stade Yves du Manoir (2023, Field Hockey) Adidas Arena (2024, Badminton & Rhythmic Gymnastics) Centre Aquatique Olympique (TBD, Water Polo & Artistic Swimming) Site d'Escalade du Bourget (TBD, Sport Climbing) The Olympic venues building budget has been set to 1.4€ billion. From the original planing, two venues have not been built : the shooting stand which was moved to Châteauroux where the already built National Shooting Center was expanded and the main Aquatic venue which was moved to the Paris la Defense Arena.

  8. Erin Brooks is likely to have a pretty long career, if she's as good as she's hyped up to be she'll be a medal contender in 2028 and 2032 (and will be able to qualify through the WSL, which is a more reliable way to qualify) 16 is really young for a surfer.

  12. Perhaps in the future, but given the fact she failed to qualify to the World League, she's still behind the top surfers. I look forward to seeing her in 2028. From a qualifying to the Olympics perspective surfing had one of the lowest chances, but that's more due to our versatility. Right now we are on pace at qualifying in 28/32 sports. Not many nations have that kind of reach. Modern pentathlon could have someone if Fitzsimmons competes at the World Cups while sport climbing is quite unlikely. Field Hockey and Handball obviously has no chance now.

  14. Yeah - Realistically we probably can confirm about 90% of the quotas across the 4 team events but there are a couple of interesting battles to keep an eye on. Women's Team Pursuit: The field is pretty much set. The only potential change is whether China will be able to overtake Japan for the 10th and final quota - but it is difficult to see how they can find the additional 400 points that they would need. So realistically, I think the current top-10 will be the line-up for Paris. Women's Team Sprint: One of most interesting of the events where there is still scope for significant changes in the line-up. The biggest question of all likely to be whether can secure a quota. In my opinion, they are in a tight fight with and for spots 7 & 8. the Dutch are likely to be safe given they still have 2 NC events to count so it will probably come down to straight fight between Canada and France. There's around a 300-point gap to close. Situation slightly complicated by the fact that Canada don't appear to be competing in Hong Kong (although some contributors here have expressed doubt on that point) Men's Team Pursuit: I think the field is pretty much set - thankfully have managed to pull themselves back to the middle of the pack with their last couple of performances. There is a bit of a battle between and for the last spot but looks likely that Belgium will ultimately take the final quota. Men's Team Sprint: Extremely tight battle between and for the final quota with the teams separated by just 45 points. The current entry lists for Hong Kong don't have Canada entered and Poland have been showing some good form so they may just have the edge.

Women’s repechage round 4 is over, here who’s still in contention for the 8 individual quotas: Main Round 4: Repechage Round 5: By my count, that gives each surfer an 8/15 chance at an Olympic quota (there are some complications to the mix for surfers from Peru/Brazil/Spain as they can only secure two quotas)

  25. You'd probably be fine, basically everyone under age 50 speaks English to some degree, and over 50 I'd say it's hit or miss. Especially in Athens, most people are more "educated" than in for example some remote/rural villages. Anyways nowadays Greek has adopted so many English words that you probably speak more "Greek" than you think

Here in Britain it’s the BBC, which means luxuriant amounts of aimless yakking, not very much shot put qualification. https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-indoor-championships/glasgow24/where-to-watch?countryCode=GB Alternatively, the World Feed, if you have your full-blown VPN. https://worldathletics.org/videos

  41. Especially Spitse and Martens. Spitse is old and Martens hasn’t performed for years. With Ajax performing well in women’s UCL there should be some new names as well. Defense has already completely changed, but midfield and attack are basically still the same names as 2017.

We're lucky she's still competing, her initial plan was to retire after Tokyo but she stuck around for one more Olympics because she feels she didn't get a "proper" Olympic experience due to the pandemic.

Other than a long course world record, she's accomplished everything you can in this sport. Will never forget waking up at 4 in 2019 to see her upset Sjoestroem in the 100 fly and then becoming an Olympic Champion two years later. She'll always be a legend.

  44. Yeah, the timing is a VERY bad idea. August in most sports is actually one month where almost nothing significant happens so it was perfect moment to stage the biggest athletics event. Delaying this to September is nonsense and it actually hampers the American market the most since NFL rules in September and nobody will give a hoot about track & field at that time.
    1 point
  45. actually, it's not a great idea it makes the world champship just a meet like another, with no hype for many athletes, for TV networks and, in the long term, also for fans look at those sports who already have the world champ every year
    1 point
  46. I think that not having the world champs in mid-August is the worst idea they could have in september all the main championships in team sports (namely, especially football) in Europe (which, like it or not, is the main market for the Athletics World champs) have already started, they're gonna have a lot less space on the traditional TV networks (especially during the weekend, but also on prime time Tuesday through Thursday thanks to the Champions League) and above all, the economic value of the world champs will decrease a lot for those same TV networks

  47. But predicting upsets is also....on the edge. Once people mention someone as a possible surprise, that person is barely still a possible surprise The real surprises and upsets are those winners who nobody mentioned as possible winners, outsiders or anything.

  48. Brazil has an internal regulation, so it will only take boats that are top16 in the worlds. We still have to see if our NOC will comply to that or push to send all boats.
