  1. Hi All I’ve been dipping in and out of this forum as a guest for a while so thought it was about time I signed up. I’m always a big fan of the Olympics when it comes round and already looking forward to being part of the journey to Beijing 2022 and beyond.

  4. This is what I said in another topic. I'm very optimistic about Paris 2024 and I think we will have a good chance to have a much larger team and win many more medals again after a very long time. I'm excited to follow our athletes/teams make progress over the next few years. All of our 4 medalists from Tokyo should be back in Paris, and if all goes well I think they can all win medals again. Plus I think we can win more medals in athletics and rowing, and I think we will win medals in swimming and tennis (we were very close in both this time). Of course there is always sailing where are competitive and some of the fighting sports where we have talents (wrestling, fencing, taekwondo, judo). Shooting is another possibility with not just Korakaki but also some other young talents (Chatzitsakiroglou, Katzouraki, Kefalidou) and maybe it will finally be time for another team sport such as men's basketball or women's water polo?! Of course it is early to tell but so far it's looking good. @George_D @Ted @maestro @El Greco 21

  8. She's done it! Biggest title of Camila Giorgi's career! She beats Karolina Pliskova 6-3 7-5 to win the Canadian Open (I forgot the sponsors' name since it's not Rogers Cup anymore ). What a summer for Italy, ESC, Euro 2020, Olympics haze and now even WTA follows suit! I haven't been this happy since like 2016 when it comes to women's tennis!

  12. Guess things are moving fast, Kabul has fallen basically two days after my last post. Politico was right, all that US money spend (ultimately wasted) for 20 years and Taliban needed 20 days to take over the country. Well done! Another spectacular failure of US warfare politics. The ghosts of Vietnam are alive and doing just fine!

  15. So, US 20 yo experiment in Afghanistan finally failed today and we all back to the start positions. Now new Osamma Bin Laden is needed and whole story can start from the begining. Europe must prepare for new waves of refugies and migrants, US can continue with their international politics based on human rights fairytales in third world countries and so on. Deja vu.

  18. TBH I don't know either for women's normal life. I guess Taliban will make some progress to please major powers to earn their recognition. I hope the progress is not just a show but normality. Anyway, the first step of normal life is that you and your beloved don't have to fear to die. If Afghan women and men could safely survive and make a living without fear of sudden explosion is already a progress towards normality and already better than Syria. Any other improvements can only be gained step by step by their own.

  21. People think Saigon 1975 is betrayal and abandonment. But it's just from western perspective full of arrogance. For Vietnam it's the ending of war, ending of chaos. It means they don't have to pick a side to fight and die meaninglessly. They can start to focus on survival, food, education and economy instead of death for democracy, freedom, liberalism or communism. Vietnam is much better than most westerners anticipated and Saigon is a very prosperous city nowadays thanks to ending of the war. So US is not god who should be responsible for Vietnamese or Afghan's future. It isn't supposed to be there at the very beginning and have no right to help locals to choose a "democratic" government. It's better late than never of US withdrawal.

  26. Betchart/Huberli are the new european champions with a 2-0 win over Stam/Schoon. The swiss team had previously saved two match points in their semifinal against Borger/Sude, to advance to the final. The german team took bronze with 2-1 win over 2019 european champions Kravcenoka/Graudina, after coming from a set down. The title remains in Switzerland, Heidrich/Verge-Depre had won last year in Jurmala, but they didn't play this year after winning their olympic bronze. In Tokyo, they were the team to stop Betchart/Huberli in the round of 16. Tomorrow, men's semifinals and medal matches will be contested. Mol/Sorum are the defending champions having won three times in a row in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Semifinals are Mol/Sorum- Brouwer/Meeuwsen and Kantor/Losiak-Boermans/de Groot. That means the Netherlands are guaranteed at least one medal. Semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, medal matches will follow in the evening.

  27. I came up with a very long list, so i trimmed it down to only 100 athletes. I focused on U23 athletes in most sports (U20 in artistic gymnastics/swimming) who didn't win an individual medal in Tokyo and in my opinion have a good chance to win at least one in Paris. I also made a top 10 list for french athletes who didn't make the top 100. Here are the lists: Top 100: Oleksiy Sereda (Ukraine, diving) Rikuto Tamai (Japan, diving) Jacob Whittle (GB, swimming) David Popovici (Romania, swimming) Hwang Sun-woo (South Korea, swimming) Hubert Kos (Hungary, swimming) Ilya Borodin (Russia, swimming) Summer McIntosh (Canada, swimming) Isabel Gose (Germany, swimming) Leon Marchand (France, swimming) Destin Lasco (USA, swimming) Katie Grimes (USA, swimming) Wang Jianjiahe (China, swimming) Viktoria Mihalyvari-Farkas (Hungary, swimming) Anastasia Gorbenko (Israel, swimming) Evgeniia Chikunova (Russia, swimming) Torri Huske (USA, swimming) Claire Curzan (USA, swimming) Benedetta Pilato (Italy, swimming) Andrey Minakov (Russia, swimming) Joshua Liendo (Canada, swimming) Antonio Djakovic (Switzerland, swimming) Samuel Short (Australia, swimming) Meg Harris (Australia, swimming) Mollie O'Callaghan (Australia, swimming) Bella Sims (USA, swimming) David Bethlem (Hungary, open water swimming) Anastasiia Kirpichnikova (Russia, open water swimming) Hikaru Mori (Japan, trampoline) Erriyon Knighton (USA, athletics) Krzysztof Roznicki (Poland, athletics) Sasha Zhoya (France, athletics) Sean Burrell (USA, athletics) Mykolas Alekna (Lithuania, athletics) Sha'Carri Richardson (USA, athletics) Winfred Mutile Yavi (Bahrain, athletics) Britany Anderson (Jamaica, athletics) Cyrena Samba-Mayela (France, athletics) Cole Hocker (USA, athletics) Oscar Chelimo (Uganada, athletics) JuVaughn Harrison (USA, athletics) Kristjan Ceh (Slovenia, athletics) Mykhaylo Kokhan (Ukraine, athletics) Brianna Williams (Jamaica, athletics) Matvei Volkov (Belarus, athletics) Mekides Abebe (Ethiopia, athletics) Henriette Jaeger (Norway, athletics) Prisca Chepsang (Uganada, athletics) Kim Je-deok (South Korea, archery) Tang Chih-chun (Taiwan, archery) An Se-young (South Korea, badminton) Jessica Guo (Canada, fencing) Aizanat Murtazaeva (Russia, fencing) Federica Isola (Italy, fencing) Yuka Ueno (Japan, fencing) Liza Pusztai (Hungary, fencing) Mohamed El-Sayed (Egypt, fencing) Kirill Bordachev (Russia, fencing) Remco Evenepoel (Belgium, cycling road) Lea Sophie Friedrich (Germany, cycling track) Kata Blanka Vas (Hungary, mountainbike) Saya Sakakibara (Australia, BMX) Evy Leibfahrt (USA, canoeing slalom) Nicolas Gestin (France, canoeing slalom) Jacob Schopf (Germany, canoeing sprint) Moritz Adam (Germany, canoeing sprint) Joan Morena (Spain, canoeing sprint) Alexandra Förster (Germany, rowing) Gennaro di Mauro (Italy, rowing) Althea Laurin (France, taekwondo) Omar Salim (Hungary, taekwondo) Takeru Kitazono (Japan, artistic gymnastics) Illia Kovtun (Ukrain, artistic gymnastics) Yang Haonan (China, artistic gymnastics) Kayla DiCello (USA, artistic gymnastics) Ryu Sung-hyun (South Korea, artistic gymnastics) Viktoria Listunova (Russia, artistic gymnastics) Vladislava Urazova (Russia, artistic gymnastics) Sofi Özbas (Hungary, judo) Romane Dicko (France, judo) Wakana Koga (Japan, judo) Manuel Lombardo (Italy, judo) Tato Grigalashvili (Georgia, judo) Lasha Bekauri (Georgia, judo) Tomokazu Harimoto (Japan, table tennis) Lin Yun-ju (Taiwan, table tennis) Saurabh Chaudhary (India, shooting) Mary Tucker (USA, shooting) Sofia Ceccarello (Italy, shooting) Oceanne Muller (France, shooting) Jeanette Hegg Duestad (Norway, shooting) Deepak Punia (India, wrestling) Amir Hossein Zare (Iran, wrestling) Turan Bayramov (Azerbaijan, wrestling) Sergey Kozyrev (Russia, wrestling) Khanum Velieva (Russia, wrestling) Anshu Malik (India, shooting) Keno Machado (Brazil, boxing) Caroline Dubois (GB, boxing) Dainier Pero (Cuba, boxing) Top 10 for France (only those who didn't make the top 100): Ryan Helal (track cycling) Mathilde Gros (track cycling) Loane Lecomte (track cycling) Alija Luty (fencing) Christo Popov (badminton) Lisa Barbelin (archery) Shirine Boukli (judo) Justine Delmas (swimming) Jeff Erius (athletics) Rose Loga (athletics) Note: Obviously a lot of the names that didn't make the list very well could have made it and considering the number of sports i covered, it is very likely that i missed some names. In athletics and swimming especially there are tons of athletes who could have made the list as well (for example Franko Grgic, Yang Yunxuan, Merve Tuncel, Adriana Vilagos, Tara Davis or Jorinde van Klinken).

  28. With the conclusion of the 2020 Summer Olympics, curious eyes have turned to Paris and how those games will defer from Tokyo. What changes will we see? The most eye-catching stat is that Paris 2024 will have fewer events with 329 total, 10 fewer than Tokyo 2020. This is the first time since Rome 1960 that the next Olympics will have fewer events than the previous one. Totallympics takes a closer look. This decrease is largely due to the changes of host selected sports as Tokyo selected sports baseball/softball (2 events) and karate (8 events) have been removed. Additionally, four weightlifting events will be removed and not replaced (the 10 remaining weight classes will be confirmed at a later date). The other three Tokyo selected sports; skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will make their return with sport climbing gaining an additional two events (men’s and women’s speed). The fourth and final host selected sport will be breaking, set to make its Olympic debut with B-boys and B-girls events. Additionally, other sports will have changes to their program, but will keep the same number of overall events. The biggest changes will be seen in canoeing and sailing. For canoeing the men’s and women’s K1 200m events were dropped while the slalom discipline gained two events with men’s and women’s extreme canoe. Additionally, the men’s K2 1000m and C2 1000m will consist of 500m events. Sailing sees the complete removal of the men’s Finn class while the men’s and women’s 470 will now become a mixed event. These changes will make room for the men’s and women’s kiteboarding. While the windsurfing events remain, they will change equipment from the RS:X to iQFoil. In order to decrease the difference between men’s and women’s medalling events, boxing will have a men’s event transferred to the women for a total of 7 men and 6 women events. The weight classes will be confirmed at a later date. Overall, there will be 157 men’s, 152 women’s and 20 mixed or open events. Other sports to have changes include athletics where the men’s 50km race walk will make way for the mixed team race walk, shooting where a rotation from mixed team trap to mixed team skeet will occur and sport climbing where the men’s and women’s combined will only include the bouldering and lead portions as speed is now a separate medalling event. Next week Totallympics will take a closer look as to the changes to the athlete quotas as the 2024 Olympics will have to adhere to the IOC’s 10,500 limit after having more than 11,000 athletes in Tokyo.

  29. Politico has written a piece that 20 years of American "gains" in Afghanistan will be (are being) wasted in 20 days Makes you wonder what all those billions were spend on in the end? The Afghan Army looks completely useless and it seems like Kabul will fall way sooner than even I expected. I don't even give them 2 months if Taliban keep going with this.

^And some more: Kynigakis (22) finishing 5th in the men's 10km swim marathon, amazing result for his age and it looks like we found the new Gianniotis. Filtisakou (20) finishing 29th in the women's 20km walk is also impressive. A year ago I never would've expected her to make it to the Olympics so that's a nice surprise. I hope she can continue to improve. Plus an amazing performance from our men's water polo team to secure a medal. We are pretty young too, I hope this will be the first of many. Also she's 37 so not young, but great result for Drisbioti finishing 8th in the women's 20km walk. She was 15th in Rio and hasn't ruled out Paris. Would be difficult but I'd love to see her improve there too. Still sad that our artistic swimming girls didn't get to compete, but they are very young. Most of the girls are teenagers still. So we end with 4 medals. It could've been better but also could've been worse. I am proud of so many of these results (also Stefanidi 4th and Kyriakopoulou 8th). I think 2024 and 2028 will be really great for us. I'm excited for those Games.

I'm still feeling very good about these Games despite only winning 3 medals so far. I think men's water polo, Stefanidi and Prevolaraki are all very good medal chances as well as smaller chances for Volikakis, Kynigakis, Kyriakopoulou, Pilidis... The biggest highlight from Tokyo for me has been seeing how many good young athletes we have which makes me confident for the future. Ntouskos (24) and Tentoglou (23) winning gold medals is really great, and I expect to see them both back in Paris which would also be very nice. If they can stay healthy then I think they can take medals there as well. Karalis (21) coming 4th in the men's pole vault was a nice surprise. It looks like he is finally in the right direction again and I'm excited about his future. Bourmpou (20) and Kyridou (20) finishing 5th in the women's pair in rowing was also an incredible result for their ages, and I think they can also perhaps win a medal in Paris. Sakkari (26) and Tsitsipas (22) maybe didn't win medals, but in total we won 5 matches in tennis after not being represented in the sport since 2008 (and not winning any matches since 2004), so it was still a positive showing and I think in 2024 they will do even better. Teltsidou (25) finishing 7th in judo was a pleasant surprise, and I hope this gives her the confidence to take the next step in her career and start to become a medal contender in future competitions. Korakaki (25) finishing 6th in both shooting events is a tremendous accomplishment even if she won two medals in 2016. In a sport like shooting where age isn't so important, she will obviously be around for at least another 5-6 Olympics and I think it is fair to expect more medals from her. Karachaliou (24) finishing 9th in sailing was not bad for her first Olympics and I think we will see her in Paris, Los Angeles and maybe Brisbane. Ntountounaki (25) 9th in women's 100m butterfly. Best result from a Greek female swimmer since 2004. She seems like a late bloomer and hopefully she can keep improving and make the final in 2024. Same goes for Christou (24) in the men's 100m backstroke who was 11th. A.Kyridou (22) finishing 10th in the women's single sculls is also very good for her age. Everyone else who finished above her was 6+ years older than her. I think she can also win a medal in Paris, regardless of whether she competes in the single sculls or not (probably it is more likely for her to change categories). Tzeli (19) finishing 7th in taekwondo was also good even though she didn't win any matches. I liked what I saw from her and the fact that she qualified is very positive and a good sign for the future. Gkountoura (24) was disappointing that she lost so early in fencing but like Tzeli, I think she has a good future ahead of her. In field events, Scarvelis (25) and Polak (24) I think can do even better in Paris and make the finals in their events. Same goes for Anastasakis (26) and Frantzeskakis (21). Papastamos (20) had the second-best time of his career in the men's 400 IM and finished 14th. In Paris I think he can make the final. Divari (21) and Spanaki (20) in sailing didn't do so well but both are very young so it's okay. Same with Markos (19) in swimming. Obviously there are other young athletes like Pilidis, Kynigakis, Filtisakou and those on the men's water polo team who did not compete or did not finish yet. Also it's very nice that a lot of our older athletes like Psarra, Douvalidis, Kokkalanis, Tsiamis, Filippidis etc. showed a desire to continue to Paris. I think we can have a big team in Paris, maybe even 150+ if rowing goes well and we make it in more team sports (women's water polo, men's basketball, maybe women's basketball). Also Gkolomeev and Petrounias both expressed desire to win medals in Paris which is nice that they want to still compete at a high level.

I think Karalis will have chances to improve in the future, as long as he stays injury free, which hasn't been the case in the last few years. Also, I'm not sure about that, but I think, during these years, he has had some coach change(s). These changes need time to work, much time for some athletes, especially if the new coach tries to change the athlete's technique and injuries don't help this process.

  41. the answer is simple. they can't go school (after the certain age) , no college, can't work (except certain jobs like teachers, nurses) among other improvements. from what I heard when they closed the Kabul university today, lots of the students said goodbye forever, they know they can't and won't go back. specially women Taliban is not going to enter Kabul, at least not for now. they can wait few days for the government to surrender, they also don't want to trade fire with foreign troops (still in Kabul) 22 years ago 3 great countries of Pakistan, UAE and Saudi Arabia recognized Taliban. I wonder how many will recognize the "new Taliban" I assume the number is more than 3.
