  3. very good medal chances (disappointing if they don't get anything from here) Cycling: Van Aert, Evenepoel, Kopecky, De Ketele and friends (both Road races, men's ITT on the road, women's Omnium and men's Madison on the track) Field Hockey: men's Team Athletics: Nafi Thiam (women's Eptathlon) Judo: Matthias Casse (men's -81kg) Sailing: Emma Plasschaert (women's ILCA 6) reasonable medal chances (might get a medal, but might also miss out) Equestrian: Show Jumping Team Athletics: men's 4*400m Relay Judo: Jorre Varstraeten (men's -60kg) Fencing: Nasser Loyola (men's individual Epee, if he can qualify...and it's a big "if" given the FIE rules for the Nations not qualifying for the team event) remote medal chances (if they get something here, we can call it a surprise) Equestrian: any Individual member of the Show Jumping Team Athletics: Noor Vids (women's Eptathlon), women's 4*400m Relay, Bashir Abdi (men's Marathon), Cynthia Bolingo (women's 400m) Taekwondo: Sirine Chaari (women's -67kg) Judo: Sami Chouchi (men's -90kg, if can qualify after switching weight class), Toma Nikiforov (men's -100kg), Gabriella Willems (women's -70kg) Canoeing: women's K2 Rowing: men's LW2X Triathlon: Jelle Geens, Marten Van Riel (men's individual race)

  5. Don't forget the women's field hockeyteam. After Netherlands the best in the world in my opinion. And the Belgian women's basketball team has a good chance to medal as well. But the best chances for gold are Kopecky (3x), Evenepoel and Van Aert (2x), Casse and Thiam. But I won't be surprised if they get 10 gold medals.

  6. Once again, my top 3 was an easy one, and i knew a song would be my 12 from the moment I started listen to it. But I have to say, this is one of my favorite editions ever! The average song quality is really good (for my musical taste of course) 😁

  10. UWW provisionally suspended multiple time World bronze medalist Mohammad Ali Geraei because of what happened in Belgrade during the World Championships. his brother M. Reza (World and Olympic Champion) was about to lose his lead in 1/8 final match against a Japanese wrestler until someone from the crowd (later revealed to be his brother) threw a bottle of water to the mat, stopped it for few minutes, giving his already-dead-brother some minutes to recover a bit and somehow survives the match 10-10 or 11-10. Reza lost his next match heavily (he was already dead) but came back the next day to win the bronze and the Olympic quota. that was a very shameful act and he deserves a long ban I would gladly give up that quota/medal. we were always proud of our wrestlers being fair and committed to sportsmanship

  12. Noor Vidts: if she could not win a medal in Budapest in a weak competion, she’s never going to do it at World level. There’s a big question mark about Thiam’s return. But even then, Anna Hall must be the favorite for Gold. The Rowing LWX2 did not make it to final of the World Champs, and failed to win a quotum. The 4x400 relay Men narrowly failed to qualify for the final in Budapest: time really seems to be up for the incredible Borlee twins and Belgium has failed to find comparable replacements. The women finished 5th, and that was in a race without the Americans. Of the five Judoka’s mentioned, only one won a medal at this years World Champs. Kopecky winning 3 golds?: next year’s Road race is far less ideal for her than the one in Glasgow, she’s really not the favorite for the time trial, and her chances in the Madison are heavily influenced by if the doping suspension of her partner will stand or not. Hockey: the women are just as capable as sucker punching the Dutch in the final as finishing 7th. Also, they haven’t always been lucky in qualifying. The men failed to win their last two tournaments, and are in a bit of transition, with some of their older players retiring or not being selected. show jumping really is completely unpredictable. In Tokyo Belgium won bronze in the team event on the back of the refusal of one the French horses (IIRC). Belgium certainly has a lot of opportunities, but I once read somewhere for most teams only 1/3 of those, come to fruition.

  14. Sure, nothing certain about Świątek. But I do hope you are wrong here. This is W tennis anyway, so anything can happen. Still I believe she can win this thing: - it's on clay, she won RG 3 times before, we'll see how she plays in 2024 RG before the olympics, - she will be focused on the olympics, she said many times before that this is an important tournament for her, her father was an olympian in Seoul in rowing (quadruple sculls) but they finished out of Final A (7th) and he was very dissapointed; when she lost to Badosa in Tokyo she was really disappointed, even crying on the court when the match ended. But ofc: - i believe this will be a tournament with majority of top players participating, i don't think many will skip it like it happened before, it's Paris, Roland Garros, maybe some players who are not good on clay will say no; - even when she plays well at RG in June, it doesn't mean much - Radwańska was in Wimbledon final in 2012 and then she lost the 1st rd game against Julia Goerges; I love Aga, a big fan of her, probably I'm a bigger fan of Aga than Iga, but Aga seemed not to care about olympics too much, I still remember what she said in the interview after the match, she looked like she doesn't care; - and sad thing is Iga refuses to play for Poland in the Fed Cup this season, which - if i remember correctly - is somehow mandatory when you want to play at the olympics (these rules are pretty complicated) but i hope she will be eligible to play in the end. She can be invited as the former Grand Slam champion, but i think it won't be necessary and Wozniacki will take this place. Anyway, this is W tennis, this one can be won by a very random player. Still, we don't have many bigger chances for gold in Paris than her (M volleyball, W speed sports climbing, M hammer throw (although it can be gold for CAN as you know)... so i hope you are wrong.

  21. It was also very funny to see all the pearl clutching over a lack of diversity in surfing. Amusing fact: surfing is the only Olympic sport where North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania have all won medals but Europe hasn’t. And that’s after awarding just six medals…

I'd say the medal chances to look forward to so far for are: Day 1 - Ellen van Dijk and Demi Vollering (W individual time trial) Day 2 - Puck Pieterse (W cross-country), Arno Kamminga (M 100m breast) Day 3 - no big chances, but potentially Archery men team, Mathieu van der Poel (M cross-country), Maikel van der Vleuten (jumping), Tes Schouten (W 100m breast) Day 4 - Joanne van Lieshout (Judo W -63 kg) Day 5 - Sanne van Dijke (Judo W -70 kg), Marrit Steenbergen (W 100m free), men & women quadruple sculls

  25. I don't know where you read that Belgium is going to win 10 gold medals (or Kopecky winning 3) in my post (which is clearly the base of your answer) my ranking only lists real medal chances (not gold, just medals), possible but improbable chances and remote chances (which would be big surprises in case they come, as I wrote) and for those guys/teams that this year missed out on the qualification, nothing stops them to get it next year, the same for those who didn't perform well in 2023...they could improve a lot as much as they could even fail to qualify (or get injured) and we all know that in practice the conversion rate between chances and actual medals is between 1/3 and half (unless you're San Marino in Tokyo ) it's just a "pour parler", hypothesis, sometimes hope...not science nor a serious prediction...so, you just can't consider only those who are truly expected to deliver in such kind of thread

  29. Hi Guys!! I haven't introduce myself yet, but I wanted to share with you that I'm a Sports and health science high school teacher here in Argentina. The thing is this, it's just a a doubt As sports geeks, what would you do with teenagers to engage them specially in Olympics and sports science topics??? That would be really helpful for me, I think I'm a little stuck with new ideas jejejeje

  30. We should be in good stead for quotas in those sports too. We almost qualified for Softball at Tokyo, losing to Italy in the European final. Are baseball team also recently won silver at the European championships and have competed in the World Series and will be competing in the next one in 2026. In terms of Flag Football, I read somewhere that we have a competitive team and will be one of the favourites for the European quota.

  32. Jokes aside, Wout Van Aert, Lotte Kopecky, Field Hockey, Thiam ? came as first to mind

  33. Intriguing, in gymnastics recovery isnt that easy and straightforward, plus shoulder is a massive region. Overall, Nina could suffer when she returns. But Thiam should be just fine.

  34. Early thoughts on medal table after Day 5: CHN well ahead of USA - but maybe I am too optimistic for China and not enough optimistic for USA. CHN wins here majority of events when they are gold medal favs (diving synchro M 10m platform may be an exception) but in Asian Games they sometimes (rarely but still) lost some almost certain gold medals... Schedule for first days is in China's favour imo though. USA should come closer later on. And I think there may be more gold medals for USA in swimming than I predicted. It's hard to imagine that they won't improve from 2023 WCH results. So far great olympics for AUS. Lots of gold medals but here it may go other way - will they be able to perform so strong in the pool like in 2023 WCH??? FRA are having a good time. Hosts usually go better than usual so I think there is really a big a chance for at least one gold medal for them daily. Team GB very impressive. They will have many supporters in Paris, such a short trip for them. JPN get gold only in judo so far but maybe I missed sth here. Fantastic games for GEO but... why not? I haven't picked any surprise gold for them. I don't pick many surprise gold at all, I know. And I favour current WCH way tooooo much, I know. But firstly, those are early thoughts and I don't have much time for serious research. And secondly, I don't know much about many sports (surfing, BMX cycling, judo, archery, shooting, fencing and many others) so I follow the WCH results and ranking lists because what else can I do? Only one gold on Day 5 for GER is a big surprise for me. I don't think it will be that bad for them. I should check back once again on the events when they have medal contenders, probably I missed sth... FIJ gold in rugby is a bit wishful thinking for me... But why not, that would be 3 in-a-row. 0-2-2 for Poland is a lot I think. Still no gold but that would be a really nice result. Maybe i am biased here but still I haven't predicted a medal in shooting which is possible (Mixed 10m Air Rifle, W Air Pistol) and I haven't predicted any Polish medal which would be a massive surprise and we ALWAYS have at least one totally surprising summer olympic medal (M 50km race walk in Tokyo, anyone???). So hopefully we will get 4. From those 4 swimming medal would be the best fun for me because... you know, that's swimming. And our guy would be there on all the photos from this Marchand vs Milak battle... And Poland in a good mood so far because M volleyball team and Iga Świątek in W singles are winning their matches comfortably so far... Some NOCs without a medal so far: NOR DEN BUL IRL PHI EGY LAT EST FIN - but no worries, your time will come. Although... FIN, well... ??? :-((( but we will find sth... Enjoy, stay tuned!

  35. Yes they will, July is rainy season in India so we travel to countries like West Indies (non profitable tour), Ireland or England (alternate year). So there's nothing much that happens in this month

  36. Well yeah it was good but I expected a bit more from the Dutch closer to 270s rather than this. But it's ok I believe teams these days prefer T20s with all leagues in offer. Italy almost qualified to T20 WC 2024 narrowly lost to Ireland.

  38. Yeah, insane range. However, Hassan isn't one of the finalists for European athlete of the year. The finalists are: Women: Bol, Mahuchikh, Perez Men: Duplantis, Ingebritsen, Tentoglou Women's Rising Star: Adeleke, Caune, Topic Men's Rising Star: Furlani, Ingvaldsen, Laros Previous winners: Year Women Men Women Rising Star Men Rising Star 2022 Bol Ingebritsen & Duplantis Tzengko Alekna 2021 Hassan Warholm Bol Zhoya 2020 not awarded 2019 Lasitskene Warholm Mahuchikh Kaul 2018 Asher-Smith Mayer Herman Ingebritsen & Duplantis 2017 Stefanidi Vetter Levchenko Warholm 2016 Beitia Farah Thiam Heß 2015 Schippers Rutherford Zbären Bukowiecki 2014 Schippers Lavillenie Kuchina Gemili 2013 Hejnová Bondarenko Hinriksdóttir Bekrić The fact that Thiam has never become European athlete of the year is quite surprising to me.

  40. The all-too predictable US vs. Japan baseball final is far from the truth. DR has won the WBC before as well and Cuba, South Korea, Puerto Rico have all made the final before. Venezuela, Netherlands and Mexico have also made the semifinals as well.

  42. sport climbing, skateboarding and surf have become core sports they're in and will stay for a long time p.s. in LA sport climbing should finally have all of its 3 disciplines in their original version and get rid of the technically senseless combined event

  44. That's local politics, which should not be IOC concerns. If IOC validates such a weak international sport, that would be a travesty of the olympic universal ideals.

  45. I think these are all very exciting choices. With cricket and football, it’s the first time the top 10 most viewed global sports will all be at the Olympics (in some form). It’ll be unprecedented. And removing breakdancing was the right call. I can’t help but think about how confusing cricket will be to everyone in the Czech Republic 😋 I don’t even know the rules myself… I don’t like that we are getting even more discount spin-off versions of popular sports (lacrosse 6s, flag football). Hurts the prestige of the Games IMO especially since they are barely developed at a high level

  46. My idea for the team event... Mixed National Pairs: There would be 18 pairs of two nations. The format would be similair to Mixed Team Skeet/Trap. If a national jury awards points to your nation or your partner, you get a "hit." A perfect score would be 36, with eliminations beginning after the 19th jury votes. The pair with the lowest number of hits would be eliminated from the competition. In case of a tie, the team with the least number of "double hits" (where a jury gives points to both nations) is eliminated. If still tied, the team with the lowest total points is eliminated. This format could also be done in teams of three if preferred.

  47. I’m just going to “spit-ball” with laundry list of ideas and potential connections to science. 1) Bobsleigh design/mechanics as it relates to aerodynamics, friction, and weight distribution. 2) Evolutionary advantages/disadvantages when it comes to swimming. With swimming, you could also talk about the “super suits” and why they were so effective a decreasing times. 3) Energy return in shoes. Hot topic in athletics at moment. You could also look into energy return in different surfaces (grass, sand, mud, asphalt, concrete, cobblestone) 4) The breathing techniques behind free diving. 5) There’s quite a bit you could go with head injuries in various sports (football, American football, rugby, cycling, bobsleigh, skateboarding, etc.) 6) I believe there’s data that states female athletes are suffering joint injuries at a higher rate than men (at least in football), maybe you could look into the scientific theories about that. It’s a bit of a research hot spot in the U.S. at the moment. 7) Wheel hardness in skateboarding and in-line skating. You could look into the chemicals used and how it affects performance in various environments/disciplines. 8) There was that guy who went skydiving without a parachute a few years back (landed in a large net), surely there’s something about physics there. 9) tidal forces and how they impact surfing. Tidal bore surfing might be an interesting case study. 10) The science behind a lot of the para sports is probably interesting (sit-skis, racing wheelchairs, tandem bikes). 11) You could do a case study on athletics with unique biological advantages like Eero Mäntyranta. Link: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/magic-blood-and-carbon-fiber-legs-at-the-brave-new-olympics/ ESPN had/has a nice series of short videos on sport science. I’m not sure if this playlist is available outside the US (I’m also pretty sure it’s not complete), but I’m sure you could clips on YouTube. Link: Hopefully you find some of that helpful @ManuCHIL
