Despite a somehow weak tradition in cross country, we have some regions almost entirely revolving around it (Vosges, Jura, some parts of the French Alps). Not a lot of people do pratice cross contry skiing, but those who do fare really well, and as Grassmarket said, the elite athletes policy is to do best with the few we have.

The national circuit is empty of over-25yo athletes, either you are good enough to join the national team, or you quit.

Biathlon is really getting popular, as you could see last time Le Grand Bornand hosted the WC, thanks to free to air broadcasting and the great results of the NT. Mostly Tv coverage for France has had its share of great athletes since the 90's.

Yes it’s getting popular, but for example in 2013 there was no opportunity to watch the World Cup in Grand Bornand in TV.

@OlympicsFan I think at the moment there are 2 professional Biathlon places in France: Premanon and Bessans (Haute Maurienne). Le Grand Bornand is only open during the World Cup and in Places like Correncon and Les Saises there is the opportunity to train, but it is not really professional there.

I think the athletes with the most points at junior level will get a wildcard for the World Cup Final. Currently it looks good for Claude on the men’s side and Baserga/Bened on the women’s side.

Thanks. Always wished Germany would do the same. Instead you have older guys/girls who are better than the younger athletes, but not good enough to ever become world class, blocking their spots.

Good races yesterday.  Quick question, is Passler the daughter of Johann Passler the Italian biathlete from the 1980s?  I would assume so, but just wanted to confirm.

Baserga looked really good in the Pursuit.

she's her nephew...

ops...the answer was already there...I read it too late...

France picks up another gold in the Youth Women relay.  Slovenia impresses again and Italy with the bronze.  The US youth women really suffered on the range today with 7 penalty loops!

Estonia in 4th after two legs in the Youth men.  They have avoided the penalty look and doing well.
