Baseball qualification system has been updated as @intoronto alluded to in the CAC Games thread. New version is available here: https://www.santiago2023.org/descargas/en/Baseball.pdf

:CAN:NCA:USA all fail to qualify, meaning we will have an entirely new podium in Santiago. :PUR also fails to qualify. The team sport lineups are looking weird this edition. It probably doesn’t help that many qualification events have been held separately from major competitions. PanamSports and continental federations might need to rethink the qualification systems moving forward.

As I said in the CAC thread, the gold/silver medalists from 2011, 2015 and 2019 all miss out.

Definitely think the qualification process needs a rethink (for all sports) before 2027. There have been way too many updates made to the system during the qualification period (ie changing the amount of quotas at various events, eliminating qualification opportunities, adding events, etc), and there’s just an overload of competitions it seems.

In fairness, this whole cycle’s been a bit wonky (globally) because of the pandemic. Maybe it’s just a personal feeling, but it feels like there is a weird energy, incompleteness, rushed nature, etc. to a lot of the multi-sport games this year and last year.

At one point Canada and USA had no routes to qualifying in baseball, and both nations usually get the short end of the stick in other sports as there is no equivalent CAC or South American Games.

Of course, the case can also be made that those two nations also don’t seem to place a high importance on the Games. I understand why Canada might not given their participation in the Commonwealth Games, but I don’t understand why the U.S. is so ambivalent to the Games. It’s not like we have many other opportunities to compete in events similar to the Olympics.

That said, both NOCs should at least be given the opportunity to qualify, as should all other NOCs.

Not really for team sports. There are plenty opportunities for :CAN and :USA to qualify, and even in some sports (Rugby Sevens, Water Polo) they are given a free pass. I agree that qualification systems shouldn't change, though, and the Baseball situation was messy to say at least.

Equestrian Canada does not have enough money to send a dressage team to the Games. The athletes need to raise $60k to send a team, which is ridiculous if you ask me.

It's tough for a poor nation like Canada to send athletes to Olympic qualifiers.
