Should also have mentioned the Aussie Ron Clarke, who was famous for completely the opposite. He broke many World Records during the 60s - 17 according to Wikipedia - but never won a major Gold.

Just managed to watch the Monaco event Sunday evening, but holy crap what a race by Cheptegei  

 

Without any doubt one of the sports highlights of the past few years, I'm very glad I managed to avoid any spoilers until I watched it
