  1. I am looking forward to everything! If I exclude the events I'll be watching live (of course I look forward to those the most), I'll name a couple that come up to me first at this moment:

    1. M road race cycling (Mathieu van der Poel)
    2. W 400m, 400m hurdles and all 4x400m relays (Femke Bol)
    3. W 100m freestyle (MOC, Haughey, Steenbergen)
    4. W Heptathlon (Nafi Thiam vs KJT vs Anna Hall)
    5. W Sport climbing (Janja Garnbret)
    6. M Team Sprint (NL vs AUS)
    7. All Keirin races

Approaching 100 days to go, my predictions for :CAN
    Day 1

    20:55: Swimming - Women’s 400m Freestyle Final - Summer McIntosh (Silver)

    21:37: Swimming - Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Final - (Bronze)

Bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle if she chooses to do the double. She’ll have almost an hour and a half between both so it seems doable (but she’s also probably going to be swimming a rigorous schedule so maybe she’ll skip it)

    17:18-17:38: Judo - Men’s 81kg - Francois Gauthier-Drapeau (Bronze)

    17:49-18:09: Judo - Women’s 63kg - Catherine Beauchemin Pinard (Silver)

    20:57: Swimming - Women’s 100m Backstroke - Kylie Masse (Bronze)

    15:00: Weightlifting - Women’s 59kg - Maude Charron (Bronze)

19:27: Track Cycling - Men’s Omnium - Dylan Bibic (Silver)

    22:34: Boxing - Women’s 75kg Gold Medal Bout - Tammara Thibeault (Gold)

Left off some other medal chances, think at least one other name/team that I haven’t mentioned will make the podium. Still very optimistic with this prediction considering our best ever result is 24 medals at Tokyo (I picked 30 events for Canada to win medals in) but we have a talent in McIntosh now.

A talent like McIntosh in swimming really is the difference between a regular Games and a record breaker! Impressive how Canada gets so many of their medals from some of the most competitive sports at the games (swimming and athletics).

  3. Bonus fun fact: the first :NED gold medal winner will be the 150 th Dutch gold medal at the Olympics. I'll go ahead and predict a total of 10 gold medals, in chronological order:

    Day 5: Rowing M4x (150!!)

    Day 6: Rowing M2x, Sailing M skiff

Day 7: Luc van Opzeeland (M IQFoil)

Day 8: Mathieu van der Poel (M road race), Karolien Florijn (Rowing W1x)

    Day 11: M team sprint

    Day 13: Femke Bol (W 400mH)

Day 14: Hockey women's team, Harrie Lavreysen (M sprint)

What can I say, I'm an optimist and I like Van der Poel, Bol and Lavreysen:cheer:

My own medal prediction for :NED, with pessimistic and optimistic ranges:

    Archery: 0

Athletics: 2-4 - Sifan Hassan (maybe 2x), Femke Bol and enough contenders that could medal on a good day (4x400m women, Jessica Schilder, Jorinde van Klinken, Anouk Vetter).

    Beach Volleyball: 0

Breaking: 1-2 - India, Menno and Lee can all podium I believe, even if I've never watched this sport.

Cycling BMX: 0-2 - hoping for Niek Kimmann or Merel Smulders, but somehow I'm fearing an all French podium on the mens side and Smulders is not a clear favorite either.

Cycling mtb: - if Puck Pieterse keeps her form into next year... what a monster!!

Cycling road: - womens road race and time trial. Medals should be expected, even if Kopecky and Reusser are probably favorites for gold.

Cycling track: 2-4 - mens team sprint, Harry Lavreysen sprint and keirin, Maike van der Duijn omnium

Equestrian: 1-2 - I avoid watching animal sports, but I believe Dinja van Liere and the jumping team are medal contenders.

Field hockey: 1-2 - the women team will surely reach the final when I cheer them on live in Paris at the semifinal, not as confident about the mens team though.

    Football: 0

    Gymnastics: 0

    Handball: 0

Judo: 0-2 - Hoping for Joanne van Lieshout, other contenders are Sanne van Dijke, Guusje Steenhuis, Michael Korrel and Jur Spijkers. Going to lose a lot of contenders to home favorites probably.

Rowing: 3-5 - w1x, w4x, w4-, m4x and m2x I believe, but we'll have to see the new boats in action some more.

Sailing: 2-4 - 49er, 49er(fx), Marit Bouwmeester and maybe whoever qualifies in mens Foil

Swimming: 1-3 - Sharon van Rouwendaal, Arno Kamminga, Marrit Steenbergen and Tes Schouten can hopefully win 3 medals between them, but I wouldn't be suprised if only we end with only a bronze instead.

    Volleyball: 0

Waterpolo: 0-1 - hopefully we can hire Italy to eliminate USA for us again, grazie mille in advance!

Other sports: - maybe I forgot someone, but I don't think we have any other contenders.

Surprise medals: 1-2 - the best medals are the unexpected ones!

Total: 17-35 - I'll be happy if it ends up in the middle with 25.

I'd say we can expect about 8-10 golds, potentially from: Sifan Hassan, Harry Lavreysen, Puck Pieterse, Demi Vollering/Lorena Wiebes (depending on the race), Karolien Florijn, Van Aanholt/Duetz (49erFx), Lambriex/Van Werken (49er), Marit Bouwmeester and a suprise gold (Femke Bol? Marrit Steenbergen? India Sardjoe?)

With just over 100 days to go I decided to do another :NED medal prediction, but this time on a day to day basis.

    Any day (0-2 medals)

Surprise medals: preferrably Niels Laros (M 1500m) and W handball or volleyball team (what can I say, the more surprising the better:p)

    Total prediction (19-47 medals)

    +/- 10 golds

    +/- 11 silvers

    +/- 12 bronze

I feel like the day-by-day version made the numbers too optimistic. Some names I'm thinking more like 'one out of these 4 judoka's will probably win a medal', but it shows as a medal chances on 4 days, instead of just 1 expected medal.

Overall I'm a bit more optimistic than the 25 medals I predicted last time, I'll say 30 medals this time!

  5. :NED Marrit Steenbergen improved her 200m medley PB and NR by 0,3s to 2.08,86 yesterday.

Also swam a 52,72 100 meter freestyle same day at the Eindhoven Qualification Meet.

Only new qualifiers from the Eindhoven Qualification Meet are Tessa Giele (100m butterfly) and Valerie van Roon (50m freestyle).

    2) „Smaller nations“ have advantages in other sports (gymnastics, table tennis, diving, figure skating), should we also introduce heavyweight categories there?

Heavyweight gymnastics is a hilarious idea, thanks for the laugh:lol: And I agree with the reasoning as well.

Didn't see this one coming. But very nice, as well for the 4x100 medley relay.

She medalled in the 50m butterfly on short course last year, so I was already kind of hoping she could take that development into the Olympic distance. Glad to see another Olympic swimmer!

Thanks for all the great work!

I noticed a small mistake on the Netherlands Latest World Championships Medal Count: the bronze medal for Puck Pieterse is registered as Men's Cross Country instead of Women's Cross Country.

the main difference between this championship and the Olympics will be the weather/wind...in Marseille the situation is quite different from Lanzarote (which is at the Islas Canarias), so, the outcome might be different, too (btw, I don't think that :NED will miss out on a medal, at least among the women...they're too good)

I read in an interview that Annette Duetz from the Dutch 49erFX has actually written her physics master's thesis on the weather and wind in Marseille. They'll have a serious shot at gold this summer and hopefully a medal in both classes 49er and FX!

Does anyone know where you can find an overview of the extensive Olympic rankings? And where you can see how a team's points total is structured. You could follow this at other Olympic Games via various sites, but this year I can't find anything about it.

Good job from Boermans and De Groot. In beachvolleyball they are the biggest medal hope for The Netherlands in Paris. If they make Paris, they only played 8 tournaments and Boermans is injured every now and then.

The Olympic ranking is on the FIVB website instead of the Beach Pro Tour website. Boermans/De Groot are currently the lowest ranked of the three Dutch teams at 19 or 20 I believe, but I'm sure by the time Paris comes around they will pass Immers/Van de Velde and potentially Brouwer/Meeuwsen as well. As long as they stay fit this season...

I appreciate the faith in :NED

However I fear that we won't be winning enough golds to be top 5. I think :FRA and :GBR will be competing for 4 and 5, while :NED will compete with :GER:JPN:AUS:ITA for the 6-10 spots.

Our gold medal tally in recent world championships is heavily inflated, I fear Bol won't win the 400mH and 4x400m when McLaughlin is present (at least not both) and I don't see Steenbergen winning the 100m and 4x100m when Mollie O'Callaghan is back.

Wait I just reread this and realised I'm missing someone in my top 10. I kinda just assumed the top 3 was locked by :USA:CHN:RUS , but one of those countries is not competing of course.

    Version 2.0:

I think :FRA:GBR:JPN will be competing for spots 3-5 and :NED:GER:AUS:ITA:KOR will compete for the 6-10 spots.

While the United States will win more medals, China will win more gold. France will be on an island in third while 4th and 5th will be interchangeable. Japan, Italy, Australia and Germany also have a chance at making the top 5

  13. Seeing this thread again makes me want to speculate. Some interesting candidates for :NED would be Roy van den Berg (track cycling team sprint) and Sharon van Rouwendaal (open water swimming). The TeamNL media has been focussing very much on 'the story behind the medal', so I expect we'll see athletes with an emotional or personal story be given the spotlight. For me the story of Van den Berg and Van Rouwendaal would be the almost nomadic focus on training and performance and that they always give absolutely everything.

  14. Still training for my first triathlon and I'm really struggling with swimming every week, this isn't going to be as easy as I had hoped.

Meanwhile the running is still going well! Ran my second sub-40 10K today: 39:21 in a local event! My PB is still 38:45 from last year, but that was definitely out of reach despite the perfect weather conditions today.
