Modern Pentathlon at the European Games 2023
Vektor replied to Totallympics's topic in Modern Pentathlon
Disaster, we lost both Demeter and Koleszár... Goodbye to our medal chances in men's team. Hopefully we can still win the quota. -
defeated , that might hurt Poland in the Olympic qualification, depending on how the WCh will go for them. v v

Yesss girls! We might still have a chance in women's foil, the girls demolished Spain today. Meanwhile we have the QFs in men's sabre, no upsets here in the R16. v v v v

Did we (Hungarians) create this football table tennis thing (teqball) to prove that we are still good at football? I am not sold on this... sport? But hey, at least Hungary can also create sports to win medals at multi-sport events!
-
No early surprises in women's foil, these will be the expected QFs v v v v

For us it's pretty much the same. We get 24/7 coverage of both multi-sport events on national television, MTVA also has dedicated streaming channels for both. The main sports newspaper also covers both and has a leading news on it whenever we win a medal. Outside of the national sports channel and national sports newspaper the media attention in Hungary is nonexistent, but that applies to pretty much all sport events here with the exception of the big ones (Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup and Euros, F1, Champions League). So yeah, I would say that the overall attention to these two are the same, and they definitely get more attention than the usual, separated ECh of any smaller Olympic sport. Technically these multi-sport events are a success in Hungary, they achieved what they wanted (more attention to continental competitions).

Modern Pentathlon at the European Games 2023
Vektor replied to Totallympics's topic in Modern Pentathlon
Terrible fencing from most of our athletes yesterday, we will need a smaller miracle to qualify 3 of them, our team might be fucked. -
It's men's epee, anything is possible. Your team was 2nd at the first qualification event, so you might actually have a chance to qualify if you can consistently perform like that. Really, it's impossible to tell. Hungary for example can easily win both the individual and team gold in men's epee in Paris, we got the talent for that to happen. But we can just as easily fail to qualify the team. Men's epee is a giant mess of constant upsets, it's the most unpredictable discipline in fencing.

If someone would have said to me that will have the same number of quota chances here as , I would have been very concerned about their mental health.
-
I think only if France wins another quota at the qualification series via another athlete. So France already maxed out on male quotas (2 athletes per NOC is allowed in breaking). For some reason they created the qualification in a way that makes it easy for France to max out on breaking quotas. The host quotas only get reallocated if France maxes out by other means.

I can't find anywhere in the rules that the next highest ranked athlete wins the continental quota if the hosting nation (France) wins the continental event. It only says that the quota gets reallocated to the next highest ranked athlete IF the highest ranked NOC/athlete already won a quota at the World Champs. But WCh hasn't happened yet so that doesn't apply to the European Games.
-
Do they really reallocate like that? The rules say that the unused host quota gets reallocated at the Olympic qualifier series IF France qualifies two athletes directly in that gender. Which should mean that this European Games quota should be the second male quota for France.
-
That was an amazing men's singles final.

First time watching breaking, and my hot take is that this is working as a sport, they just need better TV direction. I can already tell that this will be a big hit in Paris and LA. It helps a lot that the finals are done in less than 90 minutes. It's very fast paced and the 1v1 matches make it easier to follow than most point based sports.
-
India with an Olympic quota chance at the European Games. Yep, that sure is a sentence not many expected to read.
-
Lol, of all the events, there's an actual crowd at breaking. Bigger than at ski jumping.
-
TV coverage of breaking is bad. They are filming this like any other sport event when it clearly need much more dynamic camera movements, angles and editing to sell it.
-
Hm, I see both on the streaming platform of the Hungarian broadcaster. Must be some error on the EBU site.
-
Well, if you think that's bad, you haven't seen Pusztai in action.
