    I always remember Pittin from the Torino Olympics. At that time, the NC Ski Jump was the very first event of the Games after the Friday night opener. In NC Olympics, the jumpers go in the World Cup points order. So the Italians selected Pittin, their best junior Combiner for the team. Because he had no WC points, he was the first competitor of the whole Olympics.

    You will have to go a long way to beat Canadian Skeleton slider Dave Greszczyszyn, which I believe is a Ukrainian name transliterated into Polish and then adopted into English. And don’t start me with Gaelic names. My cousin’s daughter is Caoimhe...... .....it’s pronounced Kiva. Only the i is pronounced as it would be in any other language.

    I believe this was standard practice in many sports back in the old Советский Союз days. The idea seemingly was that women would somehow recalibrate their pain thresholds after giving birth.

    Don’t know about him specifically, there are lots of American-based Brits in various sports at the moment. Usually it’s American-born people with one British parent who have been through or are still in the NCAA system and who are eligible for some kind of subsidy or help from the lottery-funded British system.
