  1. Ah yes, Greece, my favourite European swimming powerhouse (my reaction to their performance this past week) Must be all of the gyros that they’re eating
  2. Don’t be, I’m sure they’ll be fine Unrelated, but Mary-Sophie Harvey produced a new PB of 4:07.70 in the women’s 400m freestyle at Sette Colli! One of my favourite swimmers on the Canadian squad, so happy to see her swimming well (hopefully her form continues heading into the Olympics)
  3. Well, not so fast… If there’s any B standard invites handed out, Oleksiak will be in. Oleksiak is the only swimmer (besides MacNeil) in the world with that standard according to @Topicmaster1010
  4. I’m not him, but yeah there’s absolutely no chance. Not sure why they would taper for a random meet when the Olympics is only a month away.
  5. I can feel your pain. As far as team sports go, Canada just barely missed out on qualifying in men’s rugby sevens and women’s volleyball. There was also lots of luck involved with qualifications that I’d thought were guaranteed (at least at that point), women’s basketball team had to rely on Spain defeating Hungary (they were down 20 or so at one point), and our men’s volleyball team had to rely on Bulgaria. I’m not going to include our women’s 3x3 team, as they lost to Australia and Spain (fellow medal contenders) in their first two chances at the Olympics. Most of the other qualifications were as expected, of course our men’s basketball team FINALLY qualifying was one or the rarities (although with their talent it shouldn’t be). Basically, what I’m saying is that even in team sports which we did qualify in, it’s been disappointing. Edit: More luck was required with our women’s waterpolo team, we had to rely on South Africa declining their quota
  6. Not sure how this hasn’t been mentioned yet, but Illya Kharun recorded a new PB of 51.02 in the men’s 100m butterfly at Mel Zajac! Not typically a fast meet/pool, so this is a great sign for the upcoming month ahead.
  7. For those of you who are too lazy to click on the article; Pool A: Pool B: Pool C:
  8. defeat in 5 to win bronze!! Blocking masterclass from Poland in the 5th set Great match, I’d highly suggest you give this a watch.
  9. v. for the men’s CAVB quota, and v. for the women’s CAVB quota
  10. Wouldn’t use the word collapsed (not like they were up 16-11 in a set and lost or anything), but yeah definitely disappointing that China had two in the final and neither won a quota, especially playing at home.
  11. CAV women’s quota to So happy for Ishii/Akiko
  12. Insane foot volley from Gabi
  13. First of all, no I am not happy with how the Olympic qualification period has gone for Canada… lots of near misses 1. Well thank you for reminding me about how our women’s volleyball team didn’t qualify… but I’d say women’s volleyball, women’s volleyball, women’s volleyball. Jokes aside, my other two picks would be Pamela Ware/Mia Vallee in women’s 3m synchro diving, and our men’s archery team. But there’s so many I could put with Cody Young in surfing, our men’s rugby team, and some missed chances in rowing. Erin Brooks, was nowhere close to a quota in surfing (she only had one chance, due to citizenship issues), but she would’ve been a medal hope had she qualified. 2. Karate, squash, baseball/softball in. Breaking, artistic swimming, modern pentathlon, equestrian, and rhythmic gymnastics out. I’d also add some more to other sports. 3. 50km race walk instead of the mixed team relay, separate the boulder and combined disciplines in sport climbing (edit: actually, I’d rather allow a maximum of 2 individual athletes instead of 1 in sports like judo, boxing, taekwondo etc), and make the Olympic programme 3 weeks instead of 2.
  14. Guess we’ll have to see I think it’s possible with Grimes and Forrester, but they aren’t consistent enough to be marginal favourites for medals.
  15. I’d take everything they say with a grain of salt, but a SwimSwam commentator actually said that Ledecky is at least partially tapered. As much as I hate to admit it, her times, although still ridiculously quick, have been getting slower and slower throughout the last couple of years. She’s 27, her age might be catching up to her…
  16. Silver is wide open too IMO. Grimes sure on paper would be the favourite, but she went 4:35 at Trials… Gorbenko winning a medal would likely require a massive PB though.
  17. Any streams for the Asian/African Qualifiers??
